We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they've hatched!

Good morning peeps! It's another gloomy day here, but I'm enjoying my coffee while I'm on these threads so all is good. Just saw something on FB I thought was so spot on that I'll share it in case some of you haven't already seen it. It's a tweet by Simon Maloy:
"You won't find a better summation of the Obama-Trump transition than a nuclear physicist being replaced by a Dancing With the Stars washout."
Pretty much nails it in my opinion.

Hi
It's sunny, blue skies here, but COLD....
Gramma13 WELCOME. I hope you come back often to give a Conservative point of view. I do think it's important to hear both sides with an open mind & friendly chat.
Not really feeling much Christmas spirit here. But keep trying to find some. We've missed Basketball & Wrestling, Jason's ABLE Christmas Party, & Mom's NH Christmas Party because both Jason & DH been fighting flu/cold last couple weeks. It's nasty crud that just seems to hang on & on. I'm trying to fight it off with Wellness Tea & Zicam.
So what qualifies Eric & Donnie Jr to personally pick Secetary of Interior & sit in on other cabinet nominees. 🙄 ?!?! ...Think most know the answer to that. Really! Separation of Trump business & Presidency???!!!. I think not!
I'm thinking Mother Nature is looking at Tweety's Cabinet/Staff picks & weeping.
Think HEALTHY

Oh, this is so good it's good is good! Thanks for posting!
Is it me or does anybody else wonder if it was about 200 years ago instead of today, and this guy was doing the things he's doing and saying the things he's saying, he's the one that would have been locked up by now? Or put in front of a firing squad for treason?
Just wondering.

Maybe DT is trying to build a dynasty with his kids and son-in-law all involved so heavily not just in his business interests but also in the country's business. And not a single one of them has any experience which qualifies them to play such roles in running the country. DH suggested last night that with Ivanka being so heavily involved in the political end of things, maybe DT is grooming her to run as President one of these days. As for his business interests, clearly he has every intention of remaining heavily involved. Turning everything over to his sons is not even a pretense at a Chinese wall between his businesses and himself. We hear an awful lot about the 3 oldest children, but very little about Tiffany and Melania seems to have faded far, far into the background. I find the part about Melania very interesting. For me, DH is my sounding board about everything. Melania, however, seems to have a very specific role as trophy. From what we're seeing now, I suspect that her role is going to just keep getting smaller and smaller. Maybe she doesn't care as long as she's married to all that money. She likely went into this marriage with her eyes wide open.

Welcome back Gramma13!
Linda and Pat, thanks for sharing those articles. Both are very good. Usually I'm not much of a Michael Moore fan, although he has put out some good documentaries. In this article, however, I think he is right on target about DT. It is dangerous, seriously dangerous the way he is playing with all our lives. Most thinking people recognize this, even those who are in his own party (although I think it's just a party of convenience and not belief for him) are frightened by how cavalierly he is taking our national security.
He may not have time in his busy tweeting schedule for national security briefings, but we do know that he makes time for the really important things in life such as meeting with Kanye West, making personal attacks against union leaders, attacking Broadway musical casts; and, we don't need to fear that SNL is going to pull the wool over anyone's eyes because he's closely monitoring them.

Welcome Gramma13!
Birdgal - I love your raven! I'm a particular fan of ravens. They nest near my workplace. I am thrilled by their throaty calls and by the whispery quietness of their wings in flight, and by their intelligence. You might enjoy the Facebook page for the Tower of London Ravens. Due to legend, the guards keep six ravens as pets to guard the tower from falling.
I have nothing to add to political discussion today. Suffering an awful RA flare and am just not in the mood. Tonight is my book club Christmas party and I am debating attending. All of the ladies in attendance are liberal leaning, with the exception of one member who's Mom is visiting. She is a southern conservative Christian type but knows how to converse a difference of opinion by phrasing things in a "well looking at it from this viewpoint" way. It will be a spicy night - we'll see if I make it.

Deb- Don't yell, I am having trouble getting in again w/password.......
Anyway by the time the Electoral College meets we will all be Electoral Scholars .
Hamilton really knew what he was doing when he created the College, especially the part about being interfered with by foreign powers.
"Why the Electoral college"
by Marc Schulman
The Electoral College was created for two reasons. The first purpose was to create a buffer between population and the selection of a President. The second as part of the structure of the government that gave extra power to the smaller states.
The first reason that the founders created the Electoral College is hard to understand today. The founding fathers were afraid of direct election to the Presidency. They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power. Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers:
It was equally desirable, that the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice. A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations. It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States. But the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the system under consideration, promise an effectual security against this mischief.
(See All of the Federalist 68)
Hamilton and the other founders believed that the electors would be able to insure that only a qualified person becomes President. They believed that with the Electoral College no one would be able to manipulate the citizenry. It would act as check on an electorate that might be duped. Hamilton and the other founders did not trust the population to make the right choice. The founders also believed that the Electoral College had the advantage of being a group that met only once and thus could not be manipulated over time by foreign governments or others.
The electoral college is also part of compromises made at the convention to satisfy the small states. Under the system of the Electoral College each state had the same number of electoral votes as they have representative in Congress, thus no state could have less then 3. The result of this system is that in this election the state of Wyoming cast about 210,000 votes, and thus each elector represented 70,000 votes, while in California approximately 9,700,000 votes were cast for 54 votes, thus representing 179,000 votes per electorate. Obviously this creates an unfair advantage to voters in the small states whose votes actually count more then those people living in medium and large states.
One aspect of the electoral system that is not mandated in the constitution is the fact that the winner takes all the votes in the state. Therefore it makes no difference if you win a state by 50.1% or by 80% of the vote you receive the same number of electoral votes. This can be a recipe for one individual to win some states by large pluralities and lose others by small number of votes, and thus this is an easy scenario for one candidate winning the popular vote while another winning the electoral vote. This winner take all methods used in picking electors has been decided by the states themselves. This trend took place over the course of the 19th century.
While there are clear problems with the Electoral College and there are some advantages to it, changing it is very unlikely. It would take a constitutional amendment ratified by 3/4 of states to change the system. It is hard to imagine the smaller states agreeing. One way of modifying the system s to eliminate the winner take all part of it. The method that the states vote for the electoral college is not mandated by the constitution but is decided by the states. Two states do not use the winner take all system, Maine and Nebraska. It would be difficult but not impossible to get other states to change their systems, unfortunately the party that has the advantage in the state is unlikely to agree to a unilateral change."

" They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power." Hi Anne! Thank Goodness we dodged that bullet, huh? lol. Nature Lover and Gramma13, I'm glad you like the picture. I love all birds too. Years ago I joined a bird chat room. I was so excited when I found it. Finally a place to chat with other bird lovers. After only a few visits it was suggested that me and a friend of mine find another chat room. We were both horrified at how these so called bird lovers were so happy and joyful to share the gruesome details about how they caught, tortured, and killed sparrows, or what they refer to as 'junk birds' by trapping them in a burlap bag, smashing the bag against a tree until there was no more chirping sound and movement coming from the bag. My friend and I were happy to leave their site. But not before we told them exactly how we felt about junk humans. I did know about the Tower of London Ravens, thank you! But I did check out a couple of articles and videos about them because, well, why not spend some time with an unkindness of ravens? lol.

the biggest reason I like your bird pic is because it's a raven. I have a new greatgrandboy...three months old and his name is Raven which really fits him because the little hair he has is dark brown and he has brown eyes.
thanks Anne... I need warmth right now so I'll be sitting close to the caldron to get warm. Had a hard time getting my fire started today.I could use the hot cup of brew too.
Yes I pretty much think that Michael Moore is an idiot but he, like most people, does make sense now and then I'm sure.
