Food for Thought:
Eat Mindfully
Hi everyone,
Have you read the January 23rd issue of People Magazine yet? On the cover is our very own Oprah with her comment, “I finally made peace with food.”
Oprah’s story is not much different from yours, mine and so many others you’ll read on Connect any day. She spent years on the weight-loss roller coaster, feeling great when the scale was down, then embarrassed and guilty when she put the weight back on.
Beyond the Scale and SmartPoints gave Oprah a way to fit healthy, mindful eating into her life … without deprivation. It’s worked for her (42.5 pounds down so far!) and it will work for you, too.
What does it mean to “eat mindfully”? It’s all about learning to pay attention and to make choices. To be conscious whenever something goes into your mouth.
No more, “Who ate all the chips? Me? When? I don’t remember!” Instead, how about actually tasting what you eat? Savoring it?
Do you find yourself wolfing down a stand-up dinner before heading off on errands at the end of the day … or eating while reading and answering emails at your desk … or multi-tasking with the iPad, phone and TV as you work through you plate? Been there. Done that.
The next time you catch yourself eating this way, think about it afterwards. Did you enjoy the food? What did it taste like? Would you make it again? Do you feel OK with how much you ate, and how fast? If you can’t answer these questions, you have some work to do!
There are all sorts of ways to slow down and pay more attention as you eat, but it can be tough in the moment without a plan. This is where the ideas we share at our meeting or on the phone can help. Maybe you’ve figured out a trick for focusing on food at lunchtime that you’d be happy to trade for a suggestion about how to add mindfulness to the dinner mix when your stomach is growling, the kids are cranky and the dog is pawing at the door. It’s time to bring it all out in the open!
Are you ready to Live Fully in 2017? OK. Let’s get to it … together!
See you at our meeting or talk with you soon,
Susan
P.S. Consider this from the Jan. 12 episode of Connecting with Oprah: “What’s it going to take to put you in the center of your own life?” Watch the full, 6-minute show soon for ideas and tune in every Thursday at 8pm (or anytime afterwards) for the next installment.
