Happy Saturday Evening Owls.
Did a few odd jobs around here this morning and then we went to Cabelas to return something. They were so nice about it even though I didn't have a receipt. Gave me the full amount back on my credit card. After that we went to a greenhouse my sister in law had told me about. WOW....I could have spent a bunch but only bought one hibiscus and 2 ceramic frogs. Been raining here most of the day and looks like it's going to start again soon. I'm sitting outside with Ozzie right now and thankfully the bugs aren't bothering me.
Got a phone call from some friends this morning wondering if they could come to visit tomorrow. Glad my house is clean. I'll have to wipe up the living room floor because Ozzie has tracked in. That and check the bathrooms. They're coming at 1 so not sure if they will have had lunch or not. I have cheese/salami and crackers and some blueberry bread. Also have beer, soda, wine and water if they want.
Phyl, do you remember starting that Seven Sisters series of books? Seems like it's taking her so long to get each new one out. I did see that the 4th one The Pearl Sister is out so got it this morning from the library. I'm pretty sure it is not one I've read before. Have you read that one? I really liked the ones I've read but sure is aggravating when it takes so long for the next one.
Our neighbor is the head cook at the nursing home here in town and she refuses to throw food away so tonight she brought some Tater Tot Casserole and breadsticks to us for supper. Hadn't had that for a long time. No cooking for me tonight.
Have a good night. Think our DGS is stopping over sometime tonight. Hope not too late.

Betty, your new place sure has improved things for you. Glad to see that.
actually slept five to five last night! Got to store, made a blueberry Rhubarb pie (new recipe) and a casserole, walked the dog before the lag set in. We caught up on a couple tv shows but. Stomach is still on wrong time , so would you believe just pie for Supper? One could do worse.

What a good neighbor to have, love tater tot casserole. It's my step daughter's specialty. She provided it for all the family fun times.
Betty, I think retail outlets are being extra nice to customers because so many are buying on line. Amazon Prime and Costco home delivery are my main shopping places. I don't think I will ever grocery shop on line, unless it is Publix and I cannot get out any more. But for other things, my fingers do the shopping. Amazon has free delivery as does Costco, and right to my front porch. And one or two day delivery. Plus great prices too. I do go to Target but haven't been to a mall in probably 10 or 15 years. I hate to see stores closing, but if online shopping is offering better prices and home delivery, they need something to draw customers in.
This is kind of political, yesterday or the day before it was announced that the unemployment rate is the lowest in many years. A local Dairy Queen owner said he may have to close because he cannot fine good help. Too many of the good employees have jobs.

hi, betty I have not read any seven sisters books.
I did finish I AM MARALA last night.think the last 4-6 chapters were the best.when she got shot is when the book starting getting better for me.
I looked her up on google.s he is now 20 years old and still fighting for girls and women to get a education in several countries..
for me there was just to much history and talk about the wars.she is to be amirered for what she is doing.
the book will go to a free library or goodwill.
I didn't do to much today.the sewing shows did not interest me today.
after lunch we did go for a ride. stopped at the sweet shop and had a ice cream cone.
I use to feel sorry for store closings don't anymore. they did it to themselves by offering free on line and free returns.then the stores here can't compete with the online orders.
ellen who has worked for chrisopher and banks for years told me,when a customer brings something to the store that has to go back it cost the store to ship it back.
I do feel sorry for the empolyees losing jobs.it also hurts customers who like to look, feel and try on. I am one of those customers.
a good pai rof shoes I have to try on.sandals I hve ordered from qvc and they are ok.
there are alot of places here that are hiring. part of the problem is people don't want to work. they don't want to work for mimumin wage or just don't want to do certain types of jobs.
there was nothing wrong with me working at hardies, mcds or a nurseaid. I don't have enough fingers for over the years how may kids and adults have told me I don't want to work there.
they even told me I can make more money collecting uemployment. wonder what they did after that check ran out??
sorry didn't mean to write a novel or sound like a rant. phyl

I Know what you mean, Phyl. My Vet is one of the last to own her own business but cannot keep assistants because she can’t pay much and there are better wages where you don't get bitten. She is also 76 or more a bit absent minded now and cranky! We are going to finally move to one nearby after 37 years with her. A friend recommended a good one and next week I will bring shoe records and some history to them to get a chart established before our Old Vet is sick again.
People also want some kind of benefits or at least some they can pay into at group rates. They also want a full time job and many employers dodge benefits and such by limiting hours and lay off those folks first.
Hey , we have Texas putting up billboards here advertising starting salaries 12,000 higher than most school in AZ! Teachers have already fled to Nevada and California. Talk about poaching! But people have to pay off college loans and new classes to keep certification.

I Do feel sorry for some of the employees that have been with a company for years and now the store is closing. I don't know much about the teacher situation in AZ. I do know that my 2 grandkids are doing much better in MN than they did in AZ. A friend that is a teacher and lives in Mesa says some of the teachers there don't even have a teaching certificate. I don't know if that is true or not.

Lin, in my home town there were two choices for high school, regular high school or the technical high school. No girls went to the tech school Two courses offered in the regular high school college prep or general. General taught nothing for the boys, for girls there was secretarial or home ec. As a teacher, do think that there should be more tech schools for girls and boys to prepare them for a trade? The tech school in my home town was called trade school.
My take on teacher salaries is that we pay sports stars, movie stars and TV stars millions and don't pay the most important people enough. Teachers are educating our next generation and we don't pay them enough.

All the teachers here walked out for a week in May protesting the state budget as inadequate yet again ... ed here has been at 2008 budget levels while repeated tax cuts are made. We have lowest salary in the country, highest number of charter schools without same standards that receive state money. At least 1/3 have bad financial management and scores but are run by political cronies. Teachers fled. There are over 2000 positions they could not fill , so classes got huge. People were hired on “emergency certification” . Appalling.
The walkout was about more than salary. Schools falling apart, 25 year old texts...and more. There has been improvement in next budget but who knows what comes the next year?
yes girls should and do get tech ed these days. There are excellent regional programs they go to half days with academics the other half at home schools.

lin, I do see your side of the coin also.
yes I agree teachers anywhere deserve more money.
kwik trip is a big outfit here. they have convince stores in several states.they supply alot of items to greocry stores and other type places.
there are alot of different type of departments in this big plant one is the bakery.they start out at 17 bucks an hour with benifits. they are having problems getting people to apply for jobs.
I will hush now. phyl

I shop online most of the time, too, mainly Amazon. I am going to try Smiths (Krogers) order online pick up at store service. It's fairly new. It would enable me to do more than one thing in town once I can drive again. I'm not a bundle of speedy efficiency any more, and I think it will take an adjustment time.
Today I washed three loads of clothes downstairs, and The Foot is tired and being iced. One step at a time is vey slow. Ten more days before the wires are removed. I was running out of clothes! My dryer is simple, but the washing machine is complicated to explain to someone else. I will have help tomorrow to take care of folding things.
hb hasn't eaten much today and said he didn't want any dinner. He vanished downstairs after Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
I'm tired so I'll probably be asleep before it gets dark. The robins start singing about 3:30 am! There must be hundreds of nests in this subdivision. I know there are two nests in our yard, but I'm guessing there could be five more. They started nest building 2-4 weeks ago. Late this year because it was so cold. The grackles haven't left yet, but it won't be long. Not my favorite bird!
