Happy 4th everyone!
Thanks for all of your suggestions for movies, DVDs and TV shows. I added quite a few to my to-see list. Anne, I never heard of a few you recommended. LOCAL COLOR, BAKERY IN BROOKLYN, and FINDING ALTAMIRA are now in my queue. Connie, so is BRIMSTONE.
I just watched A ROYAL AFFAIR. It is quite a story, based on true events. During the Age of Enlightenment. a doctor hired to work in the Danish court, has an affair with the queen. The two of them manage to get many laws passed that bring Denmark into the group of nations moving towards more equal and equitable ways. Thanks for the recommendation on this thread. I liked it. The female lead is Alicia Vikander, whom I have seen in many films lately. Well-done!
Please share any new viewings. We are always looking for a good movie.

I am currently watching season 3 of THE AFFAIR. I don't know that I would recommend. Lots of sex and bad language and the people make such bad choices in their lives, but I am hooked.
Connie, We are currently on season 2 of THE TUNNEL on Amazon Prime. We also have problems understanding the dialogue (and on many other shows where accents are foreign).

Tonight we wanted to watch the next episode of THE TUNNEL but for some reason it was not downloading from Amazon so we watched a movie recommended by one of you. MAD TO BE NORMAL. This was an interesting film.

My DD and I went to see WHITNEY last night. We both really liked it. There are some revelations in this film that neither of us had heard.
Documentary ... With Whitney Houston, Bobbi Kristina Brown, Bobby Brown, Cissy Houston. An in-depth look at the life and music of Whitney Houston. ... The film is an education in the music industry, media reaction and family drama. The film captures the quality that made Whitney Houston magical, but more than that it puts together the warring sides of her soul.

I just finished watching DIFRET, an Ethiopian film based on a shockingly true story. In 1996, a 14-year-old girl in a rural village was kidnapped by a man and his friends. The man wanted to marry her but had been told that she was too young by her father. The men beat her and the man raped her. Trying to escape, the girl shot and accidentally murdered the man. She was put on trial for murder and was defended by a brave female lawyer.
In 1996 in Ethiopia it was still traditional for a man to kidnap a woman (girl) he wanted to marry! Neither she nor her parents had the right to stop him.
The film was produced by Angelina Jolie. I do not like the way Jolie leads her life, but it was a good thing to bring this issue to the public. I wish it were better done, but I am very glad I watched it. Although women's rights have been hard to win here, sometimes we forget how far behind us many other countries are. Powerful!

I just watched ANNIHILATION, which I rented from Netflix. It stars Natalie Portman as Lena, who joins a mission to discover what happened to her husband inside a weird phenomenon, the shimmer, that is expanding across the USA. They discover mutated creatures and plants. It is beautiful but dangerous. I like science fiction and was totally hooked.

Tonight we watched UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE (a love story). A wealthy man, a penniless musician (James Murray) and a cleric vie for the affections of a beautiful schoolteacher (Keeley Hawes). Set in the 1840s. It was pretty good.

Last night we watched A PROMISE on Netflix. It was entertaining but not great.
Germany, 1912. A graduate of humble origins takes up a clerical post in a steel factory. Impressed by his work the elderly owner takes him on as his private secretary. His health declining, the owner is confined to his home, where the young man moves to continue his work. There he meets the owner's wife, a much younger woman, beautiful and reserved.
