Difficulty: Medium Servings: 4
INGREDIENTS For the steaks 3 tablespoons fat-free milk 2 large egg whites 1.5 ounces all-purpose flour (about 1/3 cup) 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon Salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 4 (4-ounce) sirloin cubed steaks 2 teaspoons vegetable oll
For the gravy 2 cups mushrooms, quartered 2-1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 can (14.5-ounces) fat-free, lower-sodium beef broth
DIRECTIONS Steaks Mix the egg whites and 3 T of milk with a whisk and pour into a shallow dish; set aside.
Mix the 1.5 oz of flour, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt in a shallow dish.
Dip the steaks in the egg mixture first, then dredge in the flour mixture. Set aside.
Use a large non-stick skillet. Heat the skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil. Add the steaks and fry 3 minutes per side; if the steaks don't all fit in the pan at once, fry them in two batches.
When the steaks are fried, remove to a plate and keep warm.
Gravy Add the mushrooms to the frying pan and sautƩ for 3 minutes. In a small bowl, combine the flour and salt, then whisk in the broth. Add the broth mixture to the pan and bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium; stir constantly until thickened, about 1 minute.
SERVING IDEA Serve with mashed potatoes.

Thank you for posting zazzles , stupid question time. When I was a kid I remember my mom getting ācubed steakā in a plastic wrapper, I think they had like 4 pats of butter on top of them. That was the last time I remember seeing it. Where would I even find it now, freezer section? ^ETA *drool*

Thank you for posting zazzles , stupid question time. When I was a kid I remember my mom getting ācubed steakā in a plastic wrapper, I think they had like 4 pats of butter on top of them. That was the last time I remember seeing it. Where would I even find it now, freezer section? ^ETA *drool* Y'know, I remember those too. I was surprised to find it in the meat section at a local Safeway that is an older, less modern, and less popular one. If all else fails, and if you have a store that has a full-service butcher, you can just buy lean sirloin steak and have them run it through their commercial tenderizer machineāask them to run it through the machine twice. I have a spring-loaded tenderizer (of course I do ) with many very sharp prongs; I could have cubed my own steak, but the thought of pounding the steak thin and then tenderizing it manually is not very appealing. I was surprised this morning when I was posting the recipe. The original recipe calls for frozen potatoes ready for mashing and includes the NI for them and the milk used to cook them. When I figured the NI initially I took out the potatoes but left in the milk. A recaculation this morning lowered the NI to the eye-popping ~250 calories per serving, and that includes the gravy! This could become a very favorite recipe!

Ha! Okay so not losing it, I tried googling and came up with nothing.
Thank you. That is a huge savings on the calories, amazing what a few tweaks can do.
Cool toy!

Found it, Huh...never saw anything like that in the freezer sections here. I do remember seeing fresh packaged cube steaks with butter atop the patties in the fresh meat section, but that was decades ago. I have to wonder how you prepare those buttered steaks; you wouldn't bread them because the butter is on the top of them. Perhaps people just bake, broil or fry them.

zazzles, Thank you for the recipe. I haven't had country fried steak in ages. DebDoesWW, I've never seen buttered steaks in our stores. I wonder if it's regional.
