I always have a bag of Ore Ida's Steam & Mash potatoes in my freezer. I used to use those but my supermarket no longer carries it. These are the Frozen Trader Joe's. $2.50 It says online. wwmessageboard.freeforums.net/post/new/27308The Trader Joe's are easy. The come in frozen “medallions”. I add milk, butter and sometimes some Parmesan cheese or garlic. Then pop in the microwave. If you make a big batch or have left over mashed potatoes. For another meal you can put the leftover mashed potatoes in a Pyrex dish. On top sprinkle seasoned breadcrumbs and some Parmesan cheese. Dot some butter on top to help it brown and heat in oven until warm throughout and the top is browned. zazzles , The All Clad Prep & Cook looks amazing. Amazon is showing it at $900. Yikes !

zazzles , The All Clad Prep & Cook looks amazing. Amazon is showing it at $900. Yikes ! Yes, expensive—$999 regular price. But for some reason I happened to go to the Sur La Table web site on July 4 and discovered it was the last day of a sale where selected merchandise was on sale 25% off—and the Prep & Cook was one of the items. Since July 7 is my birthday, I decided to gift myself the Prep & Cook. Since Sur La Table has a 60-day no-questions return policy, I decided there was virtually no risk. The function that intrigued me was the ability to make bread dough; although I've tried various methods (several bread makers, KitchenAid, by hand), I've seldom gotten a loaf that satisfied me. But the Prep & Cook did the job to a 5-star level...so simple...insert dough blade, add ingredients, select pastry/dough cycle, turn on. It kneads the dough together in less than 3 minutes, then heats the chamber to 90° to raise the dough which takes 30 minutes. Remove the dough, form the loaf, let it rise again (also about 30 minutes) and bake. I've also used to make soups, chili, the mashed potatoes I mentioned, as well as basic food processor features. OH—and sugar-free Strawbery jam with fresh strawberries, and LEMON CURD!

Since July 7 is my birthday, I decided to gift myself the Prep & Cook. Since Sur La Table has a 60-day no-questions return policy, I decided there was virtually no risk. I hope you love it. Personally, I adore hand-kneading loaves of bread and have slammed out many a frustration while kneading bread. Love the feel of the dough, the tactile wonderfulness, the gorgeous aroma, the knowledge that comes with knowing when the dough is just right. There is something about it that bonds me to the people who have kneaded, formed, and baked billions of loaves of bread over centuries. I sometimes feel ancient when I get into the Zen of dough-kneading. I do understand that the end result is what most are looking for but for me it is the total process. To me, a bread machine is just so damn sad. Yeah, I am a bit of a relic, lol. I just put up a few quarts of New Pickles from a very old European Jewish pickle recipe after harvesting a pile of cucumbers. They are so pretty. I am drawn to slow cooking and braising, drawing out beautiful flavors. My Le Creuset braisers and Dutch ovens make me happy. Short ribs and shallots and cabernet over potatoes mashed with roasted garlic. Life is good. But I guess if the new inventions can get people into really cooking again then they are wonderful things. Progress. Happy Belated Birthday Wishes!
