WELCOME TO REGULAR & NEW POSTERS! This thread is full of encouragement & suggestions. New people, welcome! We encourage you to jump in. One day, one hour, one minute at a time is easier to handle than a week, etc. Lurkers, join in
Our goal is 21 days Binge Free (studies show 21 days to break old habits & start new ones!). Whether we make 21 or one, the point is to learn as we go, replace binges with other things to help us through stressful times. Some days are harder than others & we may slip; that's OK. The Binge Monster is in the shadows waiting to pounce. Hopefully this thread provides inspiration, courage, & support to become a Binge Survivor!
You may see different folks on different "Cycles." A Cycle is a 21 day block of consecutive binge-free days. Stay with us for as many cycles as you'd like.
Everyone's definition of a BINGE is different. The Oxford Dictionary defines a binge as a spree of eating and drinking. To many of us, BINGE is defined as "eating without dignity." The dictionary defines "dignity" as a calm and serious manner or style, showing suitable formality or indicating that one deserves respect. Only you can define what a binge is for you. Going over points, as long as it was done with dignity and journaled (therefore acknowledged and "owned") isn't binging--it is up to you to decide.
SPECIAL THANKS TO LESLIE5609 for starting this challenge on the Out of Control Board, in August '02, and thanks to all who keep it going

Good morning. I would love to get both a run and a bike ride in today, but I made plans with a friend at noon to take our dogs to play and swim in the river. The forecast high is 88Ā° today, and frankly, Iām tired of riding in the heat and humidity. Iāll get my run in soon before temps rise.
I had a very relaxing, though somewhat productive day yesterday. I started reading The Storytellerās Secret and am thoroughly enjoying it. It was an August Kindle First book. Iām never eager to read a period piece, especially one set in another country, but I do usually enjoy it when I do. I highly recommend this book. It gives real eye-opening insight into the culture in India.
Jane, I love that you aspire to my level of activity. If I didnāt have the job I have, I would never be this active. Have you considered doing some strength training? I think you would really benefit from it. It would allow you some activity on the days you donāt walk. If you were to get a couple sets of dumbbells, I could Skype or FaceTime a mini session with you. This actually goes for anyone here, Iām more than happy to do it if anyone is interested.
Lori, youāve definitely given me something to think about and possibly a new challenge: to maintain without tracking. I eat the same thing many days and as long as I continue to be mindful of portions and not add extra foods, I should be fine. Thank you! Perhaps Iāll add some guidelines and reinstate FIF. Something to mull over on my run.
Kathy, excellent weight loss while on vacation! Congratulations on your current low weight. Do you remember when you promised yourself a cashmere sweater for staying on plan several years ago? Iām wondering if that coincides with the 2013 low weight.
Nancy, hope you and DH are both ok.

Morning, BFFās! Enjoying my coffee and the quiet of the morning. I had an enjoyable couple of weeks off, even though I did keep up with some work. There were things that just couldnāt wait and dealing with them was not taxing in the least. Mostly, I just really love being able to control my day and do what I want to do, no pressure. This is the first time Iāve actually thought about retirement and what it would be like. Itās not in the cards for awhile, but itās not that far off. I did have a weird thing happen, weight-related. The antibiotics I had to take because of the dental surgery a week and a half ago really messed up my gut. I gained 7 pounds, quickly. My weight has been stable for years within a range of two or three pounds and there were no changes in the way I was eating these past couple of weeks. No matter what I did, I couldnāt reverse the gains. Right now I am doing everything I can to try to restore my gut health...taking probiotics, eating foods to help with the āgoodā bacteria (high fiber, kefir, sauerkraut), and avoiding all sugar, wheat, and alcohol. I hope to see a difference in the next few days. Yikes! For the next phase of dental work in another month, which I am sure will come with another bout of antibiotics, I will be more prepared and will hopefully avoid the negative side effects. Personals in a bit...

Jan - I was literally JUST reading about The Storytellerās Secret and debating whether to buy it. I opted for The Trail of Broken Wings, by the same author. Have you read that one? Thatās a very kind offer about a Skype or FaceTime session with us. I have been MIA at the gym. Iāve just been supporting them. I knew my membership was up this summer and I went to the gym to check on that and to cancel. As it turns out, you have to cancel 30 dayās in advance of the next monthās payment, so I couldnāt just finish at the end of August. Since Iām paying through the end of September, I started working out again. It was easier to find time to get to the gym on vacation. Iāll see what happens over the next month and then decide what I want to do.
Nancy - Your trip sounded lovely and fun, as usual. Iām glad you had such a good time. If I have a healthy snack in the evening, it is usually fruit. I like frozen grapes or frozen cherries (slightly thawed). Being frozen slows me down and seems a bit like sherbet. Now, if you want suggestions about unhealthy snacks, Iāve got a million of those.
Kathy - What a great few weeks youāve had! All that activity paid off, too. Congrats on your WL. Itās very motivating.
Lori - Itās hard to believe itās back to school for the Fall already. DH was back to work on Friday, too, not very happily. I hope you have a smooth semester. Was there ever a replacement for the person who left whose work you had to pick up?
Jane - Sometimes, staying home is downright therapeutic. Iām glad you enjoyed the day. Itās also good to take a day off (or longer) of trying to reach some health goal. It gives you an opportunity to see that so many of your healthy habits are ingrained and just part of your day to day existence. I am endlessly fascinated with the science or physiology of weight loss, not that it is always obvious. For example, your big, overnight loss following your relaxing day at home. Things like that make me wonder what really was at play, which may only be partly explained by the food you ate. I generally suspect that less stress and the interplay of hormones has something to do with it, but who knows. Itās a gift, whatever the causes! BTW, I would love to see you, too!

Wow, Edesia. What an odd side effect. My guess is that the hiatus between rounds of antibiotics will get your weight right back down.
Jan, I do aspire to your level of activity. I am certain that you feel strong. I would love to have that feeling. For me, it is a pipe dream. I found out on Friday that I have osteopenia in a hip, and that osteopenia is one mini-step away from becoming osteoporosis. So, I need to do something. ANY help that you could provide would be much appreciated. My internist suggested that I take D3 with Calcium, but I have done that for years. She also suggests that I do weight bearing exercises. I need to look up precisely what that means.
Lori, more realistically, on the activity front, I would like to be in a routine that is similar to yours. For me, that is doable.
Nancy, I am seeing the current production of "Carousel" for the third time today. I am looking forward to it, again.
Yesterday, I spent an hour on the treadmill. I had not planned to have such a long workout, but I was watching the service for Senator McCain. I cried. I ended up with 12,000+ steps for the day and about 1300 calories. My weight is a bit up this morning, but I believe that yesterday it was artificially low because I was dehydrated when I weighed myself. I will likely weigh myself daily, but just for the next few days. That is because am eating brunch out today with a friend who just returned from a month in Aruba. Plus, I am eating dinner out tomorrow to celebrate a cousin's 65th birthday. Finally, on Tuesday, I am eating breakfast out with my daughter's TX in-laws, who are visiting New York. They know the person who is the pastry chef (seriously) in some NYC hotel. So, the deal is to keep the calorie count L-O-W. I cannot imagine that I will have an issue with exercise over the next few days; food will be the main challenge.
I am hoping that each of us has a great, binge free day.
Jane

Edesia, thanks for the shout out. This applies to Nancy too. I am jammed until October 6. I leave for Japan on October 11, and will be back towards the end of October. So, within those parameters, pretty much anything that is good for Nancy and you is good for me.

C38. D2. I think that C38 makes my 7th back to back cycles without any binges. Wow. I've been On Plan since May 1 (and the 4 days vacation day over points could have been honest to goodness increased calorie needs due to camping and hiking- since I still lost weight).
Nancy - hope all is well with you and DH.
Jan - thanks for starting us off. Yes! I did get myself the cashmere sweater, felt great, but didn't look that good on me. DD took it to college with her :-) Hope you get your run in and have a good time splashing in the river with puppies. That sounds like fun!
Lori - you are my role model for maintenance. I'm resigned to the fact that I will have to track for the rest of my life. However, if in a few years I can maintain without tracking, I will give that a try. For me, my whole life, I have been able to lose weight by following two rules 1) track and 2) exercise. I have never successfully maintained :-( In 2005, I lost all the weight from having my twins and stayed about 10 pounds over goal for about 3 years. Then reached a new all time high weight. I lost it all again, with the help of this group!!, in 2012 (lost 60 pounds). I gain all but 5 pounds of that weight back. My new GOAL is to maintain the weight I lose. I'm so tired of the yo-yo!!! That is why I'm so glad that you are part of this group. You inspire me with your successful maintenance!!
EDESIA!!! So nice to see you :-) Antibiotics really mess up gut health. Good plan to try to replenish your gut flora. I need to work more fermented foods into my life. I used to make Kombucha at home and told my kids it was pop ;-) and they drank it with me.
Jane - I listened to McCain's service as well. It was moving. Sigh........ Hope you can work in some weigh bearing exercises and nip that ostepenia. How fabulous that we have Jan as our personal trainer/coach to provide some help!!
Hi to all who follow and have a great day all!!

C89D5, every morsel tracked, 21 points, 2 rollovers, 5 water, 1231 calories, 10,049 steps
2 supermarkets, walked to visit friend in hospice and home, another walk later
I was only up .6 at official weigh in which surprised me. I guess the worst of binges can be reversed if we get right back on plan. Still, Iād rather not binge in the first place.
Fiber One has a new protein bar I learned about at meeting. Itās called Protein One and comes in chocoate chip and chocolate fudge. 2 points. 10 gm protein, 90 calories, 1 gm sugar, 4 gm fiber. I had one last night with half a cup of enlightened ice cream. Served the purpose.
I learned something new at the meeting. I didnāt realize I could sync my fitbit with WW tracker. It came about because I was discussing simply filling technique with one of our members who has been on it for years. She is allowed 28 weeklies which is more manageable than my 21. She suggested using activity points to supplement the 21. Sounds like a great idea for me on SFT days as it will ease up the non SFT points and should motivate me to get in even more exercise. Today will be my first day of trying. I couldnāt do it yesterday cause I already had a protein shake at the meeting and always have a slice of pizza of Saturdays. Iām excited to try it today.
Jan ā celery and LC wouldnāt do it for me at that hour, but the baked apple, or even stewed apple, is a great option. Thanks. I bought some apples yesterday. Thanks for the book suggestion. Iāve ordered a sample. Iām reading The Racketeer by Grisham and enjoying it so far. Another book I havenāt tried yet but comes highly recommended is Americaās First Daughter (Thomas Jeffersonās eldest daughter).
Jane ā Good luck with Mondayās WI. Hoping your 1-1/2 sticks. Whether it does or not, youāre doing amazingly well. I hope you are extremely proud of yourself. BTW I donāt know anyone who doesnāt have osteopenia if thatās any help. It goes with the territory. I used to do weight bearing exercises and for some reason stopped. I am determined to get back to it. My weights are sitting on the coffee table in front of the TV so there is no excuse. Most any date in October would work for me with the exception of Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I saw Meghanās eulogy and Liebermanās. Obama and Bush on my agenda for today. I listened to Biden online. All very moving.
Kathy ā I asked DGK how itās going especially with room mate. She texted back āhate my room mate, sheās a real bitchā I asked if she can change. She wrote back āIām just kidding I love her. Sheās absolutely lovely and we get along great. We are very similar and we really have a lot of fun togetherā. Needless to say I had a knot in my stomach until the second text. Does your DD have a room mate? How will you be communicating? Email, phone, text?? Wishing her a fantastic experience in her new environment. Congrats of the new cycle and the 3 lb loss. I am also at a five year low weight. When I grow up, though, I want to be just like you re binges. Columbus is always my most challenging environment.
Lori ā Hmmm. I never tried PB2. Itās on my shopping list. Keep ām coming. A whole month without tracking is amazing since youāre doing so well with the weight. I donāt think Iāll ever get there. The closest I could get is SFT just tracking the points but Iām not even there yet. My plan is to continue writing everything down on those days just in case I want to do a calorie count retroactively at some point as a reality check.

Jane - Yes, of course with Nancy! Maybe we can shoot for November, after your trip, and before the holidays. It is extremely difficult for me to plan far in advance because my work schedule will determine where Iāll be and what I can do. Much easier as the time gets closer and I have a better idea of my schedule. We can do some planning off the thread.
Re: osteopenia, it is normal to have some bone loss, but good to do what you can to counteract it. I had a GYN who read my bone density exam once who believed that osteopenia was a made up condition. The basic advice is supplements, eat a variety of foods high in calcium (not all are dairy), and weight bearing exercises. There are some foods that prevent the uptake of calcium, such as spinach and others with oxalic acid. You can google āfoods that affect calcium absorption. Foods high in vitamin C help with calcium absorption. Some medications can lead to bone loss, such as PPIās like Prilosec. I donāt know if you take any medications, but thatās something else to look into.
