WELCOME TO REGULAR & NEW POSTERS! This thread is full of encouragement & suggestions. New people, welcome! We encourage you to jump in. One day, one hour, one minute at a time is easier to handle than a week, etc. Lurkers, join in
Our goal is 21 days Binge Free (studies show 21 days to break old habits & start new ones!). Whether we make 21 or one, the point is to learn as we go, replace binges with other things to help us through stressful times. Some days are harder than others & we may slip; that's OK. The Binge Monster is in the shadows waiting to pounce. Hopefully this thread provides inspiration, courage, & support to become a Binge Survivor!
You may see different folks on different "Cycles." A Cycle is a 21 day block of consecutive binge-free days. Stay with us for as many cycles as you'd like.
Everyone's definition of a BINGE is different. The Oxford Dictionary defines a binge as a spree of eating and drinking. To many of us, BINGE is defined as "eating without dignity." The dictionary defines "dignity" as a calm and serious manner or style, showing suitable formality or indicating that one deserves respect. Only you can define what a binge is for you. Going over points, as long as it was done with dignity and journaled (therefore acknowledged and "owned") isn't binging--it is up to you to decide.
SPECIAL THANKS TO LESLIE5609 for starting this challenge on the Out of Control Board, in August '02, and thanks to all who keep it going

C75D6, 7035 fitbit steps. Cindy will be back, probably after the holidays. Her husband has been having health problems, severe left shoulder and back of his neck pain leading to ER and doctor visits. An MRI will be necessary pain continues despite medications. Jan – How fascinating is it that the cereal industry might have been responsible for the whole “breakfast is the most important meal” thing? I guess anything’s possible. Here’s an article on the subject www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/nov/28/breakfast-health-america-kellog-food-lifestyle -- Do you remember the book Fit For Life by the Diamonds? It was basically about food combining, but they suggested eating nothing from 8 PM til 12 noon, or maybe nothing but fruit – yes, that’s it. I just found this article about it www.diet.com/g/fit-for-life-diet . Edesia – Yes, she even explains the slippery slope situation when she goes thru the various stages leading to Intuitive Eating. I’ve been treating my Thanksgiving basket in a way similar to you and the apple cake. I’m definitely easing up on my food choices. I’ve never been food deprived (just choice deprived) but remain attentive to portion size. I continue to incorporate fruits and veggies into my diet as well as my 2 oils and at least 2 milks most of the time. When I choose bread, it’s always either whole grain or sometimes a slice of rye bread. Protein is never an issue. I no longer restrict myself to K-closed, though my final mini meal tends to end at 7:30. I will, on occasion grab a few cashews or something later in the evening. I’m enjoying this immensely. I really hope it works, and I will take your advice to heart about staying with it even if overeating rears its ugly head on occasion. Louise – I wouldn’t worry about a 16 pt day. Sometimes it’s good to vary the points from day to day. It might shake up your metabolism.

Morning, BFF's! It's the first real snow of the season out there. It's not supposed to last, but it will be necessary to do some car cleaning and shoveling this morning. Oh, well. For the moment, it does look pretty. My day will probably consist of errands and food shopping this morning and then settling in for the rest of the day. Dinner will be something warm and comforting (but healthy!) to counter the wintry weather. TTYL

Nancy - The concept of giving yourself permission to eat what you want or not restricting seems simple, but it is not, IMO. One of the nagging questions I had when I started reading the book, and one that I am still working through, is how this all fits into healthy eating. The chapter about nutrition is towards the end and at some point, I just skipped to it to see what they had to say. All I can say is that choosing to eat nourishing and healthy foods is not counter to IE at all, but rather central to it. As a matter of fact, you have often posted that when you started to nourish yourself, you were able to make real inroads as far as binging. Same concept here (you were way ahead of the curve!) with an emphasis on learning how to trust your own hunger and ability to figure out your own food needs or desires.
Many of the changes I made had more to do with breaking down the rules/restrictions I consciously or unconsciously lived by. Once I started to think about my own food choices in a continuous way, instead of compartmentalizing my eating based on "this is the way I should eat during the week", "this is the way I should eat on the weekends", "this is how I should eat at some event", my eating balanced out without swinging to extremes. I started doing this back in February, way before reading IE, but the book has helped me to look at habits I wasn't even really conscious of.
I'm rambling, so I'll stop now. : )

C25. D1. Tracking. Will exercise shortly. Going to be a housework day and maybe a little dedicated aerobic time on the stationary bike. I maintained my high weight this week ~ which is better than a gain. Sigh. Blizzard and -43 degree windchills outside!
Dang about changing the boards again! Sorry I'm late to the party. But oh so glad I found you all.
Nancy - I looked up the Intuitive Eating and read the 10 principles. Looks like a good plan. I see you are no longer reporting daily points. The Thanksgiving basket of goodies is still around.
EDESIA - lovely avatar. Sounds like you have a nice winter day planned. Enjoy the white day!
Jan, Jane, Cindy (hope DH gets better), Beth, Lori, Jackie, Louise and all who follow... hope everyone has a nice day.

I've decided not to go out at all. The key reasons: -the snow keeps changing in appearance and despite the forecast saying it doesn't change to freezing rain until later today it sometimes looked like something frozen instead of fluffy flakes to me -I realized I'd have to clear snow off the car after each stop and decided I really didn't want to do that -It's still only 14 degrees out there

Beth - I was struck by your comment that you were not a traditional dieter and Nancy's comment about not having been on many diets. My own dieting history is quite the opposite and is definitely behind all of my dysfunctional eating of the past, including binging. My binging was clearly a reaction to very restrictive eating. I cut my teeth on crash diets. I saw my father doing it, and when I decided I needed to diet, I emulated what I saw him do. The pressure to diet never came from within my family, but rather from outside sources. Most of the crash diets I attempted were low carb types, which is why I have had a particularly hard time with carb issues all of my life. I don't remember exactly when I first dieted, probably around 8 or 10. I did the Stillman diet, the Grapefruit diet, Atkins, South Beach, calorie counting, and NutriSystem, to name a few. As a teenager, along with restrictive calorie counting I also did amphetamines. There was a "diet doctor" my friends and I discovered who would prescribe amphetamines for weight loss. All you had to do was go and say you wanted to lose weight and he'd give you a 30-day supply of pills. I don't remember if the guy even did a basic physical. Of course, our parents never knew what we were doing. If I could, I'd go back in time to have him arrested. When I joined WW in 2010, I knew I had to give up the idea of quick weight loss. WW really helped me give up crash dieting forever and I'm thankful.

Dear all- It is so great to find this message board! I am working on the binge-free challenge. Unfortunately, last night I slipped after two very stressful weeks at work. I had been binge-free for 77 days. It is so discouraging to have slipped. It was not my worst, but I feel emotionally and physically horrible today. I am glad I found this group. I think it may help me to have support on this journey. *I have been Lifetime since 2000 and have maintained a low weight BUT still struggle with occasional binges. Ugh.* Looking forward to reading your posts!!!

Amy - Welcome! This is a great group. We are all familiar with how binging feels afterwards. Try not to beat yourself up. You overate in reaction to stress. That is not a moral failing. Hope you decide to stick around!

Welcome Amy. The most important thing about bingeing is to just keep on keeping' on. If we give up we are NOT better off then if we just keep going despite binges! The fact that you're here posting is a great victory!
Edesia...thanks for sharing your history with diets. I can see what a long journey it must be from having all that diet mentality really ingrained in your mind. You're doing a brave thing taking this journey and you will be a much happier and healthier person for it!
Nancy...i really was smiling when i read your post. My, how far you've come! You ROCK!!!!
Had a great day yesterday. Pickleball was a lot of fun. The mall was NUTS...i was surprised since it was the middle of the day on a weekday. Oh well. I got the cards i needed and got what i was looking for at Dick's...and my Starbucks, and some stickers for my nephew (new preschool teacher). Then spent the evening doing my food prep for the week.
It has already snowed 6 or 7 inches here today. DH is doing the shoveling now as it seems to have slow down. Hoping it will stay cold so that we don't get freezing rain...and then i can still go to pickleball from 5:00 to 8:00!
We spent the morning working together to make an apple crisp for family Chanuka celebration tomorrow. We're using an American Test Kitchen recipe. It was fun doing it together. Woven into our time doing that together i also got the chicken & vegetables crockpot dinner going for tonight. Now i'm going to go get the veggies & dip (fat free greek yogurt and hidden valley ranch dip) ready for tomorrow as well.
oh yeah...need to wrap the kids' presents too! Better get off the computer!!!!!
hugs to all!

C26D5 G7Y4R5 25 SP Treat count remains 23/35 no treat today 4318 steps 4FP Dedicated walk 2912 Stretching 2 FP
Good eating day. I finally made the Easy Garlicky Broccoli again. I change the recipe by leaving out the red pepper flakes and using the Romano cheese that DM always uses instead of Parmesan. I only put the cheese over the serving I had today because I found, when microwaving the other servings last time I made it, I didn't like how the cheese came out. So I'll add the proper amount of cheese each time I have a serving after I've rewarmed it. I also pan-fried chicken cutlets (without breadcrumbs) in olive oil with garlic and lemon juice. When I put the cheese on the broccoli I put some over the chicken too. Yummy dinner.
Road was plowed around 4 PM and my driveway around 8. Someone just came and shoveled the walk about 9. Forecast calls for overnight starting with more snow that changing to rain and raining pretty much all day tomorrow. Yuck!
Nancy-thanks for the info on Cindy. I'm adding her husband to my prayers.
Edesia-you're right about how pretty the new snow looks. Unfortunately the rain will ruin that appearance here. You have some interesting comments about your dieting history. I did many a calorie counting program as I was growing up. WW was the first time I got my weight to a healthy place.
Kathy-even living in Maine I can't imagine a wind chill that low. It did snow all day but we really didn't get blizzard conditions. One small incident when it had stopped snowing I happened to look out my kitchen window to catch a gust blowing snow off the roof.
Lori-hope you got to enjoy the party without any bad weather to make getting there or home difficult. Since I decided not to go out in the snow I had a nice relaxing day too. Watched Hawaii Five O at CBS.com. The episode ended with a cliff hanger and left me wondering if that's their last episode for the season. It was easier when all of the seasons ended around the same time. Now they are just all over the place.
Beth-looks like you had a typical busy day. I need to see if I have some more wrapping paper upstairs. I haven't ventured up there because of the cold. Interesting but not surprising about the crowds at the mall. I was actually surprised that it wasn't too bad at the LL Bean gift store yesterday.
Hi to those not here today.
