12 Ways to Have a Healthy Holiday SeasonBrighten the holidays by making your health and safety a priority. Take steps to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthyβand ready to enjoy the holidays.
10. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months, so donβt leave fireplaces, space heaters, food cooking on stoves, or candles unattended. Have an emergency plan and practice it regularly.
11. Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: Wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures and refrigerate foods promptly.
12. Eat healthy, stay active. Eat fruits and vegetables which pack nutrients and help lower the risk for certain diseases. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat, salt, and sugar. Also, be active for at least 2Β½ hours a week and help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a day.
Questions:
1. Comments on any of the above? 2. FUN: What is your favorite cold weather meal - holiday themed or otherwise? Is it "comfort food" or

Thank you for a wonderful week together. Judy is up next and I am looking forward to her leadership.
As for the items on today's list...not such a big thing here to have fires since houses are made of concrete. There might be a problem with an exploding propane tank as all gas stoves get their fire from a nearby propane tank. Mine is outside rather than in the kitchen but some have theirs right by the stove. Cleanliness and food safety are important any time of year. I need to get back to "healthy" eating and exercising again.
Favorite meal might be chili or soup or baked potato with chili on top...something HOT.

Fire safety - Always try to be aware. With holiday lights, there are extension cords, but nothing extreme.
Food safety - always. As the hand washing we talked about earlier this week, with my job in food service, thinking about food safety is always on my mind.
Eat healthy, stay active - doing my best.
Cold weather favorite - it's a comfort food, not a healthful choice - Chicken pot pie.
Cathy, thanks for hosting. I've got a reminder in my calendar to start the thread this next week.

I cook, and sometimes heat the house, with propane. I have a 1000 gallon propane tank out in the back yard. There's never been a problem with the tank, exploding or otherwise. I love using real candles and am totally aware of monitoring them.
I am becoming more aware of food safety since all the recalls, and I try to remember to wash my hands often while fixing meals.
I do manage to eat healthy most of the time, but I certainly could do better being active.
Chili is one of my favorite cold weather foods. Also other stews and soups.

We heat our house with natural gas. I also cook with it & our hot water heater is natural gas. Never had any problem with it. We also have a very small gas fireplace in our living room. I admit that we haven't had working smoke detectors in years. I found them so annoying that after there was just the 2 of us here, I took the batteries out of them. One or the other of them was always going off, I would have to get out the step-ladder to get up & turn them off.
I have always been aware of food safety, though I do think some of the food re-calls are a bit over the top, I also think some of the sell-by dates are a bit silly.
I try to eat the best that I can in most every situation. Sometimes, I fall off the wagon, but I always try to climb back on.
FUN: I have so many favorite winter foods, I love bean soup & cornbread.

I am pretty careful about fire safety. Although, I don't have a fire extinguisher. I have decided that I need to get one just to have one. Hopefully never to be used. I don't burn many candles unless I set a timer, as I tend to forget they are burning
Working at the food pantry, we have to be aware of food safety. (thinking of Beverly's comment, I tend to ignore expiration dates except on milk.)
I am still getting in my 10,000 steps a day. Although my zumba class is ending on Thursday. So, I will have to either find another class or some other exercise for Thursdays.
Until everyone started talking about chili, I was going to say a quiche with french bread. Still probably a casseroley (is that a word?) type dish.

Taking care of food safety by keeping my hands and surfaces clean and then keeping things in the refrigerator and cold are all things Iβm focused on.
Cold weather comfort for me is hot soup and hot tea.
