A few days ago, there was an article in the local newspaper that the city was considering the possiblity of an area-wide health initiative - the Blue Zones Project www.bluezonesproject.com/ Has your community ever sponsored/promoted an area-wide wellness project? If so, could you tell us about it? If not, do you think it's something that could make a difference?

The County Department of Health has a sub-division whose name I don't remember but it's focused on seniors. This department sponsors fitness classes for those over 60. I've been going to one such fitness class since April of 2015 (it started in the location I attend in February of 2015). That's the closest I can come to today's topic.
And please, everyone, forgive me for my absence. Life has been busier than I anticipated... and it doesn't look like it's going to calm down very much any time soon... Who said retirement was going to be chock-full of relaxation? Whew!

I may have heard of community health programs...LONG ago and far away. Nothing local. Am going to peruse the webpage you linked us to.

If I recall, in the past, there have been weight watchers meetings that focused on the idea that the people around you can impact how you act - what you eat, exercise and so on (makes sense - I've always been glad that my husband is agreeable and glad to eat healthful meals, it makes it easy for me to stay on track). So...if a community could promote and make it easy to choose the better options, it would seem that the "right" things would start to seem normal.
Some things mentioned in the article were that the area has many good things (trails and walking paths), but could use improvement in others (more diverse menu options - such as vegetarian - in restaurants. Of course, as with all projects, it comes with costs and the question of if the money would be well spent and if it would do any good in the end.
I do recall, probably about 10 years ago, there was a project in my community that focused on heart heath - it did include some education and such which involved the school meal programs and physical education departments.

I think it sounds interesting and it would be good if more communities did something like that. I'm not aware of the town in my area doing anything like that, but it does have some good walking/biking trails and a large area recreation center with an Olympic sized pool, exercise equipment, game courts, walking track and many other amenities.

I'm not aware of any community health programs around here, but the local town did just open a new park, only to be used by walkers, joggers & bicycles. It is really a cute place, I haven't been there yet, but it looks nice in passing.

The area that I live in has an amazing amount of trails for walking, hiking and biking. It seems like they are opening new ones all the time. During the summer, the city sponsors a "bike to work" event, but they offer you coffee and donuts along routes, so may be defeating the healthy thought behind that.
There is probably a 5K run here every weekend. So no real excuse not to be healthier.

No community wide programs for improving health. Iβm impressed that our WW group does encourage wellness and shares programs for fitness.
