fullmahina, you were the first one to come to mind when I was asked this question by a friend this morning. She spotted butter lettuce in a plastic container with the roots and dirt attached in the grocery store produce section. She'd never seen it before. Her question: can you replant the lettuce. I never thought of that and truly have no idea. What say ye? Any clue?

You can try. If you pull individual leaves off a head of lettuce it will keep putting out more leaves. In the summer I fill a planter with butter lettuce and looseleaf lettuce and unless they are totally ripped up, roots and all, they will keep putting out more leaves. I would leave a few leaves on if I tried to replant a stump of lettuce. It should be fairly easy, I'm thinking. Worth a try! ETA: Looks like it is totally doable!
