Hi!
Having a lazy day here after yesterday's brunch. There were 2 couples, one with 1 yr old twin girls (so cute), and another woman with her 7 yr old daughter. The 2 men and the single mom all worked at my old office. One guy we hadn't seen since he left our office 5 years ago. Can't believe how quickly time flies by. It was great to see everybody. Of course with the babies crawling around and the 7 yr old, it got kind of hectic keeping an eye on them.
I ordered some Asian buns from a restaurant down the street, pork buns and veg tofu buns. I made a breakfast strata with turkey sausage, cheese, spinach, also smoked salmon on potato pancakes (bought pancakes) with creme fraiche and capers, sliced sirloin (bought already cooked) on sliced baguette with horseradish mustard sauce and chives. Also had some rugelachs - raspberry, chocolate, and some fresh fruit. After everyone left and cleanup, I was exhausted. As always I have a ton of leftovers which we'll be eating for the next few days!
Last night there were fireworks, and on Thurs there will be more fireworks by my house.
Holly, congrats on the A! Hope you continue to feel better.
Joan, you have gone through so much with the implant, what an ordeal. I'm glad you like your doctor so much. Is San Fran a family vacation trip?
It has been oppressively hot and humid last few days but today is nicer. The next wave of hot/humid starts again on Tues.
Been watching women's soccer, so exciting!

Sue- your impromptus parties are more elaborate than anything I would plan. Sounds nice!
Joan- so VERY sorry to hear about your implant. What a bummer- I know you must be frustrated. Will you get a bridge?
Bills to pay before leave for airport- also some packing

Sue, I bet today’s game was fun to watch. I played soccer when I was a kid, but am not much of a game watcher.
Jo Anne, have a good trip! The pain isn’t too bad. Not being able to get around much is hard. Weird about losing the post!
Two books in for this contemporary trends in literature class. I’m getting ready to start The Overstory, which won the Pullitzer.
Trying to enjoy this down time. I don’t normally have enough energy to read or knit much when things get busy at work.

I read something about that book, Holly—let me know what you think?
We are leaving MorroBay this morning—will travel close to earthquake town—my Vegas friends and DD really felt it—said it was so scary to feel the walls shaking—DD said her wine glasses were tipping back and forth and the house was groaning. Hoping we don’t run into road problems but DH checked the road service site and looks as tho all is open. Hoping the earth doesn’t open up and swallow us!
the drive along Big Sur and down to here was amazing and pretty intense—winding roads like crazy high over cliffs dropping off hundreds of feet to the Pacific Ocean —and I was on that side of the car!

It was good. I think you would like it. Lots of interwoven plots and characters.
I go back to work tomorrow. Still in a boot/crutches until my post op on Friday. This time off has been restorative. Not ready to dive back into work chaos.

Busy day today prepping for dinner with DGS18 and DD and DGS15–and Jordan. Making steak and shrimp on the grill—all ready for that—also baked potatoes and a beet/arugula salad—need to make my dressing yet, beer bread, and vegan dark chocolate cake for dessert with vanilla vegan ice cream for DD and regular for the rest. Celebrating DD’s birthday and DGS’s going away soon—he will leave before we are back from Chicago—he and his gf are moving to Reno—we will help in the move the day after returning—will drive UHaul up with his belongings and hers. Such a busy summer with running every ten days or so. Beach week will start on the 3rd and we won’t be back from Reno till the 25th or 26th!
DGD18 goes back to NYC tomorrow night—she is on Zoloft and just had the dosage upped to 50 mg—even on 25 we could see a lifting of the depression/anger. It was so easy to be around her as she was just so much more even tempered. She is looking forward to going back to her apt—will work a lot the first week and then start Paul Taylor 5 week intensive for dance.
I managed not to gain any weight back on this trip—prepped my food today so back to my routine totally after this dinner—I may have a small piece of cake but will have to be very tiny as I could not do gluten free on this with no practice run. I’ve had no added sugar in anything other than one very small scoop of sorbet in Lake Tahoe—have not felt the urge either so that’s cool. Still eating a ton of fruit for morning, greens and br sprout salad with fruit for lunch and then something for protein in the evening—salad for aftere dinner snack. The sugar cravings have virtually disappeared!
I’ll look into the book—have not read a page since leaving here 11 days ago! And I keep hearing about so many good sounding books!
DS in SLCity got home yesterday from Tucson and MX border—he did that 2700 miles in one month with no falls and no head bumps—so relieved. He said he actually feels the whole thing was good for his concussive symptoms. Weird. He sounded really good and upbeat.
I have a ton of clay to glaze—but all my test tiles were still damp so are not bisque fired yet—have to put them on that shelf on Tuesday when should be ready—then I want to run some practice things before ruining all this stuff with glaze combos that I hate. Got my lady bust back for my sculpted head—I smudged the luster a little on the necklace chain but I still like it—was just a way to have something hold this head anyway so I’d have a reason to keep my first ever face I sculpted!

Hi!
Busy lately. My sister and BIL came over on 4th of July and we walked to a renovated pier by the river, which now houses artist studios, and some food and drink trucks. We got some Indonesian food from restaurant outpost that I've been wanting to try for years. The chef/owner was a James Beard nominee this year for best mid-Atlantic chef. It was really good! Then there were fireworks in the evening.
Visited my parents as well.
The weekend was full of watching Wimbledon and World Cup, so exciting!!! Julie Ertz on the team is the wife of a beloved Eagles player.
I had jury duty yesterday, I went through 3 judges and never even got to the selection process, cases were settled and/or juries were selected from a previous pool. So a lot of sitting around waiting. Good thing is that being in the city I could go home during lunch break, then go back to the courthouse.
Jojo, hope you are enjoying yourself. How is your DH lately?
Holly, I used to not like watching soccer, but this women's team is so fun to watch. I am totally amazed by their skills and control over the ball. How were your days back to work? Hope not too chaotic.
Joan, the earthquakes are so scary. Sounds like a great birthday dinner for DD Your DGS18 is moving to Reno? And your DGD18 is doing amazing with her dancing, such distinguished dance companies. I saw Paul Taylor performances years ago. Glad the zoloft is working for her.
Well, I am not doing so well with weight, even with walking 6 mi almost every day. I think I am not able to eat the same amount of carbs that I used to before just to maintain.
Volunteered today, met some new people. One woman is on sabbatical from Paris, here with her boyfriend who is doing research at Penn. She is half Indonesian and half Briton. Last week I met a guy who is still undergoing therapy for cancer. He has to live apart from his wife while in treatment because of her own immune response issues. He went to my same college about 7 years before me. Nice guy.

Hi Sue—good to hear from you! I am so psyched about my weight—not that I’ve lost tons of weight but I am slowly losing—hovering around the number just 2 # above my assigned goal weight now. And I am taking in a lot of carbs. So I’ve continued with this rule from the liver cleanse—no fats, plant or animal,==until noon meal—only fruit in the morning (I blend papaya, wild blueberries, mango, and a peach and put honey on top) , celery juice, lemon water and veggies if I want them—mid morning an apple and a date—-noon-salad that includes steamed br sprouts, greens, and other veggies, grapes or other fruit, sometimes carrots and occasionally avocado but never any animal fat. Afternoon snack or apple and date/s and melon or a peach if I need more, dinner I have a protein of either seafood/fish/ tofu/beans, etc., with a salad, sometimes a sweet or white potato and always vegetables.
It’s really weird—I am getting so many complex carbs and so much sugar—and I feel so energized all the time and have absolutely no desire for sweets or even bread, both of which I love, but just don’t feel the urge to eat them at all! I’ve only had something with added sugar twice in a month—once I had a very small scoop of sorbet and then the small slice of DD’s birthday cake the other day. It did not result in a binge—I’m just feeling so, so good—I do have olive oil in my vinaigrette that I make for my salad but I keep the ratio down to about 4:1 so I’m really down on fats. I seldom have anything that is processed—-occasionally I have had some plantain chips or mochi chips but that is rare. The concept of feeding the liver natural fruit sugars before any fats are in the body must have some validity because, at least for me, this is the most comfortable I have ever felt eating and not gaining weight!

Wednesday night I went to the studio and tried taking a wheel class—OMG, I made two small-ish pots that actually look good and the walls are not super thick—I didn’t have a fail—the teacher was an elderly man who does all the newbies—but I nearly had him one on one as the other one student had done it before and just wanted to listen and follow along to learn better. I really want to do more.
However, one of the owner/teachers has been really awful lately—I heard that even his partner is frustrated with him—he has been so nasty with me about five times in the past 2 months—yesterday it happened again in front of others—last night one of those people called me and said he’s been doing that to others as well and that she and the others there were appalled at him. I am struggling with how to handle this—it’s hard to pay to do something you love, love all the people there and have one person, who happens to own the business, be so toxic. And paying for toxic treatment does not make any sense at all. But Vegas doens’t have a lot of clay art studios—am going to look today to see if the only other one on this side of the valley is even in business any more. But I’d hate to leave as all the other people are so great—this guy is on some kind of negative trip!
I made two small dishes last night here—well started them there and carved texture on them here—am trying to make a variety of small bowls and dishes starting now in hopes of giving them as gifts for Christmas. Made a little jewelry plate for DGD18 and stamped all the things she loves on it and then cut out heart shapes for around her name. I think I’ll make some more of those, one for each of the grandkids maybe—the guy’s can be a bit bigger and be a change plate.
Also glazed about six things I’ve been saving up for glaze—hoping they don’t run and stick to the kiln—this guy has me feeling paranoid about making any mistake!
Holly, how are you getting on with post surgery?
JoAnne, are you back from CA yet?
Sue, DH was reading an article about what it costs to live on a cruise ship full time—I guess a fair amount of people do so.

Hi!
Everyone must be busy!
We are in the middle of heat wave here, high 90's, humid, and heat index up in 100s. Ugh.
Joan, so great that you are gradually losing weight, congratulations! You are really eating well, and healthy.
Too bad one of the pottery owners is such an a-hole. It just takes one bad apple to ruin things. Is there a way you can just not have to interface with him?
Holly, hope you are recovering well.
Hi Jojo!
Tonight we are going out to dinner with two neighbor couples. We're going to an old Italian restaurant a few blocks away that SO and I haven't been to in probably 20 years. It was once one of the best restaurants in the city, very old school, white tableclothes, waiters in suits, etc. This summer they are having retro nights, 1976 menu with 1976 prices! Should be fun.
Tomorrow is volunteer day. My youngest nephew will be coming with me. My sister is encouraging him to do it. I'm glad he agreed to it, good for him to start volunteer more. He will be a senior in hs, can't believe how quickly they grow.

Sitting in the airport— 6 am flight delayed till 7:30 due to storms in Chicago—ugh—DD is already in the air—worried she will be rerouted. We were lanading about the same time and sharing a rental car. Had hoped to see DGD15 dance at Joffre tonight—may not make it if the weather doesn’t clear up. Feel like we are going to fly into a hot pot! We are to stay till Monday afternoon—DD and DGD will leave Sat afternoon—want to visit art museums, take the architecture tour and just explore downtown. We got up at 3:15 to get here in time—now just waiting!
Sue the guy who verbally lit in to me was there at the studio on Tuesday when I went down just to buy two glazes and put some test tiles on the shelf—he was mr nice guy—over the top nice—his version of an apology I’m assuming—another friend told me he has a very unpredictable disposition. He’s going to ruin the business if he keeps this up—like waiting for a sniper to attack—never know when it’s you going to be in the crosshairs.
I hope JoAnne is doing okay—and her husband—maybe still in CA?
Holly, are you in a boot?

I’m in a sandal boot. It isn’t too bad.
I finish up my grad class and the class I’m teaching on the 30th. Looking forward to having a few weeks off before the Fall semester starts.
I’m reading the Widows of Malabar Hill this week. It’s pretty good.

Hi all,
I have jury duty tomorrow. Not really sure what to expect. I’ve been summoned twice before, but had excused absences.
I’ve been officially admitted to the MA in English program, yay! I expect to finish in spring or summer, 2021. My foot is getting better. Sure is a slow process. I’m going to get Charlotte back later this week.
Joan, what do you think of The Overstory?
Sue, my brother is considering culinary school. Right now he is managing the kitchen at a restaurant he’s been working at for a few years on the Outer Banks.
