Hi!
Busy weekend for me. We had a couple (who we used to work with) come over with their 3 young daughters, oldest was 7 1/2. I had my usual cheese/crackers, etc prepared. Having kids around can be exhausting! Kids tend to love running around in our house because of the big open spaces.
Sunday my 2 aunts and their husbands came to visit and brought my cousin (son of another uncle), who is visiting from Taiwan. So we all had lunch together.
Volunteered yesterday, and tomorrow my nephew is coming with me again to volunteer. Glad he liked it enough to do it again.
Joan, are you back from Chicago yet? So DGD15 is following in her sister's footsteps with dance? Hope you had good weather there.
We are finally out of our heatwave, it was like taking a hot bath every time I stepped outside.
Holly, how was jury duty? I find the whole process interesting. I've done it about 5 times, never chosen though. Each judge has their own way of doing things. Congrats on the getting into the MA program!
The restaurant business is really, really tough life. Working all the time, and practically no holidays, vacations. You have to really love it. With your brother's management background, does he want to own a restaurant some day?

On our way back from Reno, NV—landed in Vegas on Monday night and left at 6 am on Tuesday—will be faster getting home since we no longer have a UHaul trailer to pull.
Holly, I love that I first read Bark Skins and then The Hidden Life of Trees. It all fits together into one package! I feel the stress and tension so strongly—I am a tree lover anyway—have an app called leaf snap and am always using it to id trees I see that I like—this makes the trees seem like personal family members who are being slaughtered—and they are—there are a few spots that it has been a bit slow for me—like the sections on Neelay and creating the high tech video games—and I found myself wondering if I’m remembering the right character when they start to merge their paths but he seems to include little details that are like signposts saying “you remember him/her” so being patient while reading helps.
Congrats on getting into your Post grad choice program. Sounds like your brother feels he is finding his niche. How is your sister?

Hi all, so much has happened. We were in CA for two weeks- the first went to Sonama, Sausalito, and to Oakland to a giant farmer’s market. The second week my DGD was in bicycle camp and I took her back and forth. We enjoyed dinners outside by the kids’ pool and the great weather in the 70’s and 80’s. Good flights out there and back and as usual, good to be home
Spent the second day home all day doing the yard. My DDIL and neighbor did a great job taking care of my plant. Both DH and I gained wt. those two weeks away. Good to get back to our normal food routine. I did all of the cooking while there but had to gear it toward what they would eat of course. Also ate our big meal at night instead the middle of the day as we have been doing. DH seemed to do good medically while we were there ; so that was good.
My shingles are still clearing up and bother me most at night - mostly tingling and itching. No places left on my neck but still have about 5 on my face that are not entirely gone, can hardly wait to be rid of them!,
My sister’s DDIL’s mom died suddenly last week ; so we had that service to attend the first of the week, She had diabetes and had bee getting very bad with that but was not expected to die. Was moving to Augusta to be near her daughter next month.
My DDIL was in another car accident , not her fault, yesterday- hit from behind on the expressway exit ramp. Totaled her van. That is the second time in 6 weeks they have had a car totaled. My so. Got a Suburu to repack his and she thinks she willl get one too. The safety profile for them is so good. Joan you would know about that. We had a Suburu when the boys were young and kept it forever, it seems.
DH has had Drs. Appts after Drs. Appts, since we got back it seems - ano5er next week.
My niece with the shingles is begging to get better. It was thought for awhile that she would loose her eyesight. She starts radiation for her breast cancer next week. Please keep her in your prayers.
DH and walked a short distance this morning early and I tried to get him to go with me tonight for another short walk- but no. I did go myself. I am really out of shape for walking, so do better with 2 short walks than 1 long walk, walked some while in California but not enough.
Holly - how is your foot? Saw that you have a walking boot.
Joan - your Chicago trip pictures were fabulous! I know you had a great time!
Sue- sounds as if you have been busy with jury duty ( did you get picked?) and entertaining
Holly- I finished my first knitted top which came out better than I expected. Have started another which is a little more difficult..
A friend at church gave me fresh eggplant from her garden . Today at lunch we enjoyed my old WW recipe for eggplant Parmesan -YUM- one of my favorites!

Just noticed that it was Holly that did jury duty. What was the case( if you were selected. I guess you are through and can now discuss it.

Hi all,
I ended up getting excused after about an hour or so. I was kind of disappointed and relieved at the same time.
I’m three classes into the program, but am transitioning from a graduate certificate to the MA program. There are four extra classes, two of which are to write an article for the final capstone.
I just got some yarn from the big Knit Picks summer sale. I am making dishcloths, scarves, and headbands for the holiday craft fairs.
My brother is very environmentally conscious. I can see him opening a farm to table style restaurant.

Hello JoAnne—welcome back—-wow—your poor kids—2 wrecks in six weeks is frightening. Yes, the 2019 Subarus are getting the highest safety ratings of all cars—we just love both of ours—-my new little one is a Forester and Gary has the Ascent. Great gas mileage as well.
Are the multiple dr appts for DH just follow ups or is there still stuff going on for him? Has he kept off most of the weight he lost?
DH here carries all of his weight in his gut—really wish he would lose some—people don’t realize he is so overweight because he is tall and very unusually oolong waisted but when he sits down he has a belly—and it’s not good. But still he chooses things when we go out that are not good for him—like last night he had prime rib—mashed potatoes and gravy and then ate ice cream after we played cards. Now today after lunch he got out the ice cream and finished it off—luckily I only buy pints to serve from because I don’t eat it and I don’t want big amounts leftover for him to snack on.
Holly, the Overstory makes the stress feel so real that I find myself reading in small increments because I’m dreading the win of big business over the forest. I’ve always been a tree and plant person but even more so since reading The Hidden Life of Trees and this book simply amplifies that even more!
I did not take class at the studio today—saw what they were making and had no desire to make it—tomorrow afternoon I am going to go and spend about four hours just making what I want to make.
I did go to the gym and took cardio fusion and a rest and recover class—she had 10 min meditation at the end and it felt so refreshing and relaxing.
I prepped my papaya for smoothies yesterday, my celery for juicing and my beets from the garden for salads. Today I steamed my br sprouts for salads at noon and now will cut a watermelon up and start making watermelon gazpacho for dinner. Yesterday I made watermelon arugula salad again—love that so much! Must go to DD’s and juice still. One week from this morning we head to the beach! Yikes. Maybe the last trip for a little while.
Hi Sue—are you and SO planning another cruise soon? Is he still painting?

Hello everyone. Just back from the gym—had my awesome beet salad for lunch, have been doing laundry and working on my lists for the beach—to do list, take list, buy list, buy in CA list—just talked to Jordan and so glad he took the week off next week and is going to the beach with us again. I think he’s really learned to love that week just like us—funny cause four years ago he would step barefoot on the sand!
Gym teacher is downsizing and gave me her Sur La Table spiralizer—used it this morning and it actually works—made a salad for tonight that mimics the noodles in a Thai peanut noodle salad—made with kohlrabi noodles and almond butter so it’s not peanut allergic —just tasted it and it’s pretty tasty. That electric one I had bought was just a piece of junk. Have to go buy a few things today—out of makeup base, hair product, etc. It’s hot but less than yesterday and is becoming overcast. Looks as tho the weather in Newport will be so much nicer—last two years were so hot—we are a week later and missed the hot weather last week—highs will be like 77 which is nearly perfect. On Tuesday we will drive up to Laguna Beach and do the art festivals. Has been about 8 years since I’ve gone—can hardly wait as I will get so many pottery ideas!!
DH has had a bad week—three dentist visits—thhe tooth he brook a couple months ago just flared up with pain in Chicago—so they realized that the root canal was a must—they had tried just a large filling—then the root canal wasn’t deep enough and they went back in again today! They will do a crown on this now. Our dentist will cancel charges on the first session because of having to change the options. DH really sick of dental work.
Hope everyone is doing well.

All summer classes have finished up. My next library class starts on the 21st and my next grad class starts on the 26th.
I’m pretty much back to my regular walking activity level. Looking forward to getting the boot off so I can get some exercise, and get some of this extra weight off. Not sure what’s going on there.

Hi!
Did my usual Tues/Thurs volunteering this week. And nephew came yesterday as well, he's getting more used to it. There are quite a few young people who come on their own - quite impressive. They live in the city though, my nephew lives out in the suburbs and has to take a train into the city.
Last Saturday we went to Jersey for a family gathering, mostly the cousins. My mom is the oldest of 5 and each of her siblings has 2 kids, so the kids of 3 of the siblings, including me and my sister were there along with spouses and their kids. It was nice, we haven't done that in awhile.
Jojo, sounds like you had a great trip! Glad your DH is doing well, healthwise and that your niece's eye is ok. Hope the radiation treatments will be successful. So sorry your DDIL in another accident!
Holly, you are so good to start the holiday knitting already! Great that you foot recovery is going well.
Joan, you are eating so healthy. Yes, he is still painting. It is kind of in spurts, sometimes for days and days, then he needs to take a break. Our next cruise is the 77 days one, next January. We will have to make the final payment on it soon. Ugh, you and your DH have had horrible dental experiences the past couple years!
Not much going on for us this weekend. We were supposed to go to a sort of a college reunion with some of my college friends tomorrow, but that has been postponed until next month. I haven't seen these people in 20 years or so!!!

Holly , I know it will be a relief to get rid of the walking boot- probably will help lose weight too- you can be more active.
Sue- very impressive that your nephew is coming into the city to volunteer- a lot for a young mAn to commit to! Wow! A 77 day cruise! You will have to write a book on that one!
Joan DH just had a lot of catching up on different dr’s appts. He is doing well. I’m not sure but I think he gained some of his weight back after going to California. Hard to get him on the scales, but he is still wearing smaller clothes and is trying to stick to no snacks between meals.
I am back in California for an unexpected trip. DDIL called me Wednesday very upset. Since I left there DH has had 3 ER visits with numbness and pain in his left arm and face. The second time he was also short of breath and having trouble breathing. Each time they did EKGs that were normal. The last time they checked his arm with ultrasound for a blood cot but found none. He was scheduled for a MRI of the brain Thursday morning at 7 a.m. I flew out Thursday afternoon. I was quite concerned about him and he wanted me to come- he was really scared. The MRI was normal. They got the report but have not been able to speak to his dr. I think it may be disc compression in nerves and want him to see a neurologist or neuro surgeon. He had been also referred to a general surgeon for two HUGE lipomas on his neck and shoulder and I wonder if they are compressing nerves. Any way I am going to stay a while til he sees what is going on.
Before I left I fixed all kinds of food for DH while I am gone. Told him to watch his portions and to try to stick to our eating habits.

Oh JoAnne—how totally scary for your son—I am so glad you are there—he is so young! I will keep him in my thoughts for quick and positive answers—not knowing what is going on is the worst. What are lipomas? I don’t recognize that term.
Just arrived and moved into beach house—weather is about 10 degrees cooler than last year thank goodness—I think we missed their horrible hot spell last week.
DS Park Ranger and fam are here but DD from Sac was stuck on the PCHiway so pulled off for early dinner—they hadn’t moved in half an hour! DD from Vegas is due in the next 45 or so.

Hi all,
Jo Anne, hope things are improving with your son.
Joan, hope you are enjoying beach week.
Sue, 77 days is a long time. Two weeks in Israel was a stretch for me.
This is our last real week of summer before the beginning of the semester activities start. I get to take my boot off tomorrow after my appointment. Looking forward to wearing normal shoes again.
Friends is on Netflix. I’ve been binge watching it, lol. Never got into it back when it was on, but it is more relatable now that I’m in my 30s.

Home from the beach on Saturday—took 1 1/2 hrs longer than the usual 5 hr since the state decided to repair a guard railing on a Saturnday in heavy traffic!
Beach week was good—but harder than usual. DS Park Ranger is not an easy person to spend a week with—he has OCD Personality Disorder. It’s different from straight OCD—but still hard to be around full time—he also has become a closet drinker and was drinking every night—he doesn’t join in with what others are doing—wants others to do what he does or watch what he does and allow him to be “on stage”==really hard for DH who tries to give him what he craves and still be a part of the total group beach experience we always have—DDIL and DGS14 spent most of their time with him but joined the beach bum group occasionally. They did come to three of the group dinners I made. they brought their big huge truck and that made parking hard—we have parking for four cars but his would not fit in the garage so had to block the garage for the rest of us—so having to coordinate to get a car out all the time. It’s sad—four years ago he joined us at the beach but worked at participating more and was more in tune with what was going on—this year was totally different.
More later—have to go for oral surgery to have implant out now.

i!
The days seem to fly by faster now that I'm not working! My youngest nephew got a job at a bakery, and last Thursday was not able to volunteer with me because he had training.
Tues night I took the 3 younger nephews out to a nice dinner. The 3rd nephew is going back to college soon and I wanted to make we could all go out together - nice bonding experience!
Last night I took my eldest nephew and the 3rd one out for another dinner. He is back for a short break from medical school. I can't believe how old they are now, he is 26, the 3rd just turned 21 last month so he is thrilled to be able to wine with dinner.
Holly, I watched Friends when it first came out. When does school officially start? How does your foot feel?
Jojo, I'm glad your DH is doing well now. OMG, I hope your DS is ok! Did they find anything out yet?
Joan, I remember when your DS park ranger on the beach vacation 4 years ago, you were glad that he was joining you. But aside from his issues, I hope you had a great time with your family. Is it something you can discuss with your DDIL? Hope your dental surgery goes smoothly.
