Every day shines with new promise.
This is the beginning of a new week, a new month, a new year. It is time to purge our belongings, to make a clean start.
1. What is your trick for getting rid of clutter?
2. Do you keep clothing that no longer fits you, or that has gone out of style? How long do you hold on to it before you get rid of it?
3. What about purging your refrigerator? weekly? monthly? whatever?
4. Do you tend to keep things just because they belonged to someone that you cared about?
FUN: What trinket have you held on to for the longest?

1. What is your trick for getting rid of clutter? As soon as I find one, I'll let the rest of you know... Sometimes I wonder if my middle name is "Clutter."
2. Do you keep clothing that no longer fits you, or that has gone out of style? How long do you hold on to it before you get rid of it? Too big for me since reaching goal? Donated to Salvation Army or another such charity (or a women's shelter). Gone out of style? Depends; a lot of styles come back...
3. What about purging your refrigerator? weekly? monthly? whatever? Purging a fridge? How long does food stick around? (Okay, so if a salad green starts to look tired, it goes into the garbage as soon as I notice it; but food? Never goes bad; gets eaten first...)
4. Do you tend to keep things just because they belonged to someone that you cared about? Only a few things... There was one aunt whose house (when I was little) was like my home away from home. I'd get on my bicycle almost every day after school and ride to her house... She died some years ago, and her daughter-in-law took me into her bedroom to go through her closet (we were just about the same size and she lent me nice clothes when I needed something special for a one-time event). There was this one item, like a muu-muu, that screamed her name directly at me. I looked at it and started to cry. Her daughter-in-law handed it to me; it hangs on the back of my bedroom door so I see it every single day. I have no plans ever to move it away from there...
FUN: What trinket have you held on to for the longest? I'm not sure this qualifies as it's not a trinket... DS gave me an opal; I have no memory how many years ago that was. I am not attracted to opals, never have been, but it's a stone he has given to probably every woman he ever cared deeply about (including his daughter and his wife). I have no intention of parting with it. It's still in the same box it was in when he gave it to me.

1. What is your trick for getting rid of clutter? Often it has to do with having people here, having some extra wine, going through things and sending them home with those who want what I am ready to release. I have gotten rid of a LOT that way. I also got rid of a LOT hen my daughter and son were here to help bag the books and such up
2. Do you keep clothing that no longer fits you, or that has gone out of style? How long do you hold on to it before you get rid of it? I have done this more in the past than currently. I do hang onto some jeans I know will be in style and that I will wear when back at goal weight but if out of fashion have finally let go of things. I learned in 1999 that reaching goal weight again...the clothes I kept for over a decade that were "classic" did not fit the same as they had when I was younger. I may need to take that into consideration and do some more purging. At the same time...have had guests show up with missing luggage SO like to have some things they can wear should that happen and that means having more than one size available.
3. What about purging your refrigerator? weekly? monthly? whatever? No set day or frequency. If I see it is "off" I get rid of it OR if it is stuffed or can't fit anything else in...might see if there are things that should be tossed out.
4. Do you tend to keep things just because they belonged to someone that you cared about? Yes...though I have gotten better about this. I keep things with sentimental or financial value even if I don't use them often...FUN: What trinket have you held on to for the longest? I have a pendant that I was given before I was in 6th grade.
My baby book
autograph book from 6th grade carved swiss boy and girl from 2-3 grade Christmas ornaments that were mom's
Not really sure?

1. Clutter - I wish I had a trick, this is a challenge for me. I guess that I will see or become aware of an area or a category of items that needs attention and clean/sort. Not really a logical process or schedule.
2. Clothing - Size changes have not been too much of an issue for a number of years. But, as Cathy mentioned, body shape does change! Because I wear a uniform for work, style isn't an issue for that. Outside of work, I wear mainly jeans and either plain t-shirts or turtlenecks.
3. Refrigerator - as needed if I see something that's gone bad. I re-organize and check for anything that might have been hiding before I go grocery shopping on Saturdays.
4. Keeping because of others - yes, that's a tough one for me. I'm an only child, parents have both passed away. I completely realize an object is not a person or memory, but it can still be a challenge.
Trinket - I guess my mind is on Christmas yet - ornaments that I made or received as a child. I'm sure there are other things.

1. What is your trick for getting rid of clutter? ** I have a difficult time getting rid of clutter. Sometimes it ends up in the basement to be dealt with later.
2. Do you keep clothing that no longer fits you, or that has gone out of style? How long do you hold on to it before you get rid of it? ** I have clothes that I wore when I weighed less. Most of the things that are too big for me I give away. Which has led me to have to buy some things since I have gained some weight back. I continue to blame it on the prednisone, but I am working at getting back down again. But it is very slow.
3. What about purging your refrigerator? weekly? monthly? whatever? ** I don't do it as often as I should or would like to. I have some things in there that are pretty old, but some are sealed (like yogurt) and will keep much longer than the use by date suggests. The leftovers I eat most of the time, although some I throw if I don't get them used within a reasonable time.
4. Do you tend to keep things just because they belonged to someone that you cared about? ** I do. With many things.
FUN: What trinket have you held on to for the longest? ** I'm not sure with trinkets, but I have a hand made chest that my great grandfather made for my grandma for her wedding. It is probably the oldest thing I own.

1. I don't like clutter, I keep a bag, or box, going all the time for the Good Will. I have a large box & a bag of clothing ready to take now. I also make a habit of throwing away at least 1 thing each day, maybe a pen that no longer writes, or an old magazine etc, etc, Even with all this going on, I still see stuff piling up!!!
2. The clothes that are too big for me usually go in the Good Will bag. I do hang on to a few things that are too small, hoping to get back into them.
3. The fridge, just gets cleaned out when I see or smell something bad, then I may look for other stuff that has gone bad.
4. I do have several things that I won't part with because they belonged to someone that I loved
FUN: Not a trinket, but I have a hope chest that belonged to my grandmother. She died in a house fire when she was 26 yrs old, my dad was 3 mos old. In those days, young girls had hope chests. They would fill them with sheets, needlework, etc. for when they became homemakers. My dad was born in 1910 & that was the same year that she died. As far as trinkets go, I have a little ceramic cat that sits in a little chair. I have had it as long as I can remember. I had it when I was a little girl.

1. Holly, please email me as soon as you find the secret I have been working on getting rid of stuff. I even have a 365 day declutter calendar that most of the time I ignore. My clutter seems to be mostly paper or containers that "might be good for something" someday. Since this calendar just began on Jan 1, I suppose if I jumped in now, I would only be a week behind. If anyone wants the website, let me know. Its free and really does help focus on different areas. 2. I don't have any too big clothing. I have a few things that are my "hope to fit in these again". Our church has a garage sale every summer, and I purge my closet before that date and get rid of things that I don't wear. 3. More whenever. Being single it is hard to use up, say, a bottle of salad dressing before it's expiration date. About the only thing I really check is dairy- no chunky milk products for me.
I have a friend who throws out everything when they expire, good still or not. I was at her house for dinner once and she threw away all the bottled salad dressings because they had expired the day before.
4. I have a bit of my mom's jewelry (she didn't have much fancy stuff) but that's about it. I have my parents' piano and my grandparents china cabinet, but I am ready to pass both of those on to my nephew's family if he wants to come out and get them.
Another friend inherited both her maiden great aunts belongings and with what she has kept of her parents stuff, she rents 3 storage units in a town 120 miles away because she can't bear to get rid of anything. The problem is, it just old stuff, not antiques and no one would actually use it. We went up to the units once to find something and they are full to the brim and we couldn't even find what she thought was in there somewhere. Nope, no sentimental attachment like that for me.
FUN: What trinket have you held on to for the longest? I can't even think of anything, except maybe some Christmas ornaments that I have had since I moved away from home.

Need to work on clutter. I must confess I haven’t unpacked my art studio in the almost 4 years we’ve been in CO. That also means I haven’t done any art. It’s one of the first things on my 2019 list.
I also need to clean out my closet and take too large items to donate. Too many clothes and I’m planning to get that size again!
I have a set of china my mom gave us. We use it for Korean dinners. My mother in law gave us sterling and so we have that. My sisters’ Have claimed most of the big items which is good. I think the oldest item I have is a Santa filled with gum drops that my father’s grandparents gave me when I was a baby. I was the first of my generation. I still have it.
