This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year Olds board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Sitting here figuring out what is going on with this weather. We had a few inches, and it was still snowing when I walked the dog at 8 am, which actually is preferable to freezing rain. It turned to rain around 9, but it is supposed to stop by noon, and get up to 39 degrees. Even though my dog is so small, when he pulls on the leash it is hard when icy, and it really is much harder to walk. I guess my trip to the post office won't happen this morning. I ordered some personalized Christmas ornaments for some clients, and was thinking of delivering some of them myself instead of mailing. They are pretty local.
Carol, the idea of Cuddle duds sounds great, but not sure I could use them for taking the dog out. I have fleece lined leggings on under my sweats, but when I went out this morning I must have been a real site, I was wearing snow pants with DH's huge parka. I didn't get wet though! Doggie had his coat on too.
We ended up with a 2 pager yesterday, but that could of course be because some of us, mainly me, wasted lots of space with extra posts. Pinky, I hope that you end up getting to those Christmas shows tomorrow. How bad is it by you? Where do the cattle stay in this kind of weather? In trying to straighten some things up, I found a card that someone gave DH and thought of you. It said, Good News, there's a tasty way to enjoy whole grains and leafy greens, feed them to a cow and they'll turn into a delicious steak.
I am reading 3 books at the same time now. On is Girls in the Garden, which I am enjoying, but never want to think that much after dinner. Then I have the 3rd in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter. Once it gets too late, that gets too scary, and I switch to a sweet Christmas romance I have, which helps me fall asleep.

Good afternoon. Robin, I am jealous! Would love a high of 39! My weather bug says it is 17, but the wind has really picked up. Tomorrow is supposed to be terribly bitter. I have seen cows out in the fields in this weather (snowy/blowing), but I think for the most part (correct me if I am wrong, Pinky) most farms leave the cows in the barns. DH told me at lunch that there is a football game on tonight, and I did not believe him, I had not heard about it, and I usually know when there are night games on. I googled it and sure enough, your Jets are playing!! I hate night games, except for when they are on on Saturday nights. That is a perfect night for it, not on work nights. Good luck to your team, hope they win!
Hi to all, have a great day/evening.

It's 35 right now, and temps are supposedly climbing. I surely hope so because I shoveled a path to the street so my dog didn't have to plod through the wet snow, but now I don't want what is left to freeze up. Karen, I agree, I hate those night games that last until nearly midnight. My DS is going to the game, and was waiting to hear back about filming some kind of commercial for the Jets. He is the perfect one to do it. The first game he went to, back in the old days when you can do such a thing, I carried in an umbrella stroller and wheeled him around the stadium when he got antsy.

Hi Booklovers! Oh the weather outside is frightful-----actually other than the extreme cold the snow and blowing didn't get as bad as they had forecasted. The snow stopped in the night and just a little ground drifting today. The sun was out and the ski's blue but the temp is dropping as the day goes on. The forecast is negative 24 by morning with windchill of -46 in morning. And then a warm up as the day goes on tomorrow. It is expected by Tuesday and Wednesday to be up in the 20's and even possibly 30.
Robin----Hope your temps do not drop back down to freezing. The cattle just stay out in the cornstalk field----it sounds cruel I know but it is what cattle know in this part of the country. We do have a good tree shelterbelt around them plus wind breaks made from stacked round bales and portable like fence panels that can be picked up and moved where needed to stop the wind from the direction it is blowing from. They do fine, seems sometimes like the cold is less worrisome than extreme heat for the animals. Poor things but they never seem to mind. The younger calves are in amongst the buildings as they are younger and more prone to illness the first year of their lives. They are 8-9 months now and have been weaned from their mothers, but we like to get them more sheltered for their first winter.
Karen---guessing our wind blew to your part of the country. Stay warm!
I went to a DF's this morning for her annual Christmas brunch/coffee gathering. Had an enjoyable time with friends. We played a trivia game pertaining to the holidays which was fun and then chatted. Visiting with DF's never gets old for me. The hostess was afraid she would have to cancel due to the weather forecast but it wasn't that bad except for the temps. This afternoon I have just been putzing around the house. Should have wrapped gifts or baked but didn't feel like it. Sounds like our Christmas programs are still on for tomorrow so I probably will not make it here tomorrow. Hope everyone stays safe and warm!!!!!!

Hi Robin and Karen. I have to go back and read the 2 pager. I am pretty sure I missed posting yesterday. Robin your 3 books sound like a good mix. I do like Karin Slaughter. Karen I hope the picture of your tree. We had that bitter cold weather that you are getting. Today it started out with snow then rain. It actually warmed up to 38. Have a good evening. Take care.

Pinky, thanks for the info, good to learn that. So, does your DH ride around on a horse to heard the cattle? I just want to imagine a real person doing this.
I decided that I didn't want to cook dinner tonight, and DH definitely would not want to go out, and I didn't even want to go out to pick up food, just too messy out there right now. I decided to see if I could use a website called Seamless that my kids use in the city that was never out here. It turns out they are now, and we ordered Indian food, which I often have with my book club, but DH has not had in a while. Around here, Indian is much more common that eating Mexican, which seems to be one of the go tos around the rest of the country. We will see how it works out. Haven't been to this restaurant, but the other day when I was driving him home from the hospital in rush hour, and I took more of the local roads once we got closer, we passed it and talked about it.

Hi Jill-----your 38 degrees sounds wonderful right now.
Robin----DH doesn't ride horse much anymore to do this. It seems like 4-wheelers/ATV's have become the thing to use these days. We do however have 1 horse that is getting old and DH did use him alot in the past to work with the cattle along with other horses we had back when.
