I left home when I got married at 21. then moved back for the short time of my DH basic training in the Army as I couldn't go with him, then off to Georgia when he finished with that. Wow that picture of the house is gorgeous, Lucy, sure nothing like my home was!! But did have a big front porch on ours that I loved!! Missed having a large front porch like that for the rest of my life. I have a tiny stoop.
It is really pouring here, earlier it was very foggy as well and the down pours have been straight down and noisy!! Calli runs from one end of house to the other to check on the neighborhood. she will take long nap this afternoon. LOL Sounds like a horse going up and down the hallway!!
when it lets up if it does I will go to the library for the book they have on hold for me. When you spend as much time in the house as I have the last few weeks, you have to push yourself to get ready to go somewhere. Like hanging out in my leggings and long sweaters.!! But jeans it is today. It is 50 degrees right now, and the high is 52 for today. 60 tomorrow and then the temps plummet again.

This is a painting I did with the house I lived in when I graduated from high school and left home. My Dad lived there as a kid and grew up there. So the man is my rendition of Grandpa.

Connie, the wild plum on my creek is blooming and my neighbor's plum is in bloom. Another good sign: I saw a bee on a dandelion bloom when I walked to the mailbox. gonna get cold tomorrow night but right now it is 74 and cloudy.

Nancy, so glad you are getting back in the swing of things!
The drizzle, fog, and icy roads north of here have prevented us from going to visit Mother today. Her nurse called me, though, to report that she had opened her eyes and tried to say something. That's good news!
DH developed a "bubble" in his left eye about noon. We called our optometrist office and they got him in right away. After examination, it was determined that it was the virtuous fluid releasing, and that the retina was not involved. That was good news as well. He's feeling like he's falling apart, poor guy!
I finally did my shopping at Walmart this morning. I had ordered online, but life happened, so I had to cancel the order. I discovered that they have discontinued the bundt cake that our whole family enjoys, Louisiana Crunch Cake. We (I) am extremely disappointed and plan to complain. I doubt that it will do any good! DH says he has heard that if something sells so well that they can't keep up with the demand, they discontinue it rather than disappoint customers. They have replaced it with a "lemon" cake that isn't nearly as good.
I managed to get a lot out of this day -- just no visit to Mom. I paid bills, visited two banks, shopped at Walmart, and then the optometrist. I also updated a rental application. Now I'm ready to settle into the recliner for some light enjoyable reading.
See you tomorrow! ~~Mollyann

hi, I played around in my playpen this am.
after lunch we went to target to get my script and then woodmen's for groceries.
I stayed home till Don and I were married.I was 20. there was no way I could live by myself.wasn't even making a dollar an hour.
1965 I think is when the 1.25 mimnium wage law came in.still would not have been able to live by myself. giving from the heart phyl

Molly, I am glad for you that the nurse called to let you know Mom had been awake. I know how DH feels about falling apart. I started falling apart at 70.
Phyl, I know minimum wage was very low in 1957. I was making 50 cents an hour when I graduated. I was working on a farm.
I don't remember what I was hired on at but I remember the raise after 3 months got me at 195 a month. I lived in an apartment with no A/C with 2 other girls. The one from my home town married someone in the military and when he finished basic she went with him.
By then there were 4 of us and we had moved to a nicer apartment. One bedroom and a sleeper sofa. Still no A/C. Soon another girl moved in but I did not like the other 2 girls, one especially.
So a girl I worked with was ready to leave living with her brother. She was a farm girl just like me. We got a small efficiency apartment. No A/C. In those days very few girls had a car. We didn't. We walked to the bus stop. We took the bus back to our towns when we went home. She actually was from near where I am now.

I googled and minimum wage was $1. So that farmer paid us kids half. We were glad to get that. Of course he withheld nothing.

lucy I started out in the kitchen at 15 making 50 cents an hour.when I was 15.when I turned 16
turned 1 I got 75 cents and hour. can't remember what I was making when the wage became law.my 3 friends and I all lived at home.
dad would not let me move out if I wanted to. "your sister tried it and it didn't work out" were his words. she even had 3 friends she was living with.
back then then you had to be 21 before you could have been on your own.least that is what dad always told me.I do remember you could not drink adult beverages if you were not 21.
in away I was a rebel.folks wanted me to hand over my check to them. they would give me money when I needed it, yeah right.
you know room and board. I told them I clean for you.
they would have spent that little bit of money in the money in the beer joints.that was their weekend life with friends.
we were married in 1962.we are talking the 50's. phyl

Phyl, no law at least in TX about moving out on your own under 21. I was just barely 19 when I married in 1958. All my sisters were younger than that.
I will be back later to put up tomorrow's thread and get this one to the top for Kathie.

Lived with DH#1's parents when we first married then left for Augusta, Georgia when 17....with our new baby girl......She was just a couple weeks old when I moved from New York.
Prayers are started for Jenny since I read about her DSis on another thread.....She was with us when she lost her DSon years ago and also when she had the brain tumor.....She has been thru so much...my prayers are very strong for her.
We finally made it back to the ranch house today and the people who are installing the solar panels for my DSon were working on the pump so the water was off until 2PM. Jim missed another shower.....ugh! Tomorrow will be the day. Bobbie is sick so I hope she doesn't share her germs with us....but she'll be here to bathe him.
Tucking you all in now in LOVELY PALE PINK BLANKETS WITH A CARDINAL IN THE MIDDLE WITH A VALENTINE CARD IN HIS MOUTH....sweet dreams ya all!
Heart on my Sleeve - Kathie
