I am not going to make it too heavy this week.
You are going to a secluded island (although it does have electricity so you will have a refrigerator), but you can only take 1 appliance with you (phones and tablets not included), what would it be ?
and you will only have 1 protein available. Luckily, any protein you choose will be zero points. What is your protein of choice ?

appliance is tricky because if you have to find wild edibles to EAT you may not need the appliance you take.
My first thought: was a lightbulb Second thought was an all-in-one kitchen device but without coffee or a coffee grinder that would be useless
My third thought was an unlimited supply of vape mat and the electric device to use it (I hate mosquito bites) but if there were no insects...
protein might be a chicken and rooster...for eggs? Or my first thought was beans...they store well and you can plant for more

If there is already lights, & a fridge, I guess I would take a stove or a hot plate type thing. That way I could cook my food without having to build a fire every time. Also, could make coffee (if available). Wonder how long I am going to be there?
If the protein is living, I would take a chicken, she would give me eggs, plus, chickens are smart, she would be good company. Otherwise, I guess I would have to go with the beans, all depends on how long I have to stay. Remember that movie with Tom Hanks?

I wasn't able to check last night, so didn't see the Thursday thread until this morning... DM made pies from scratch (well, the crust from scratch, anyway). Can't say I remember whether her pies were delicious or not... DF loved 'em, but he had a real sweet tooth... I'm not into pie and haven't been since at least young adulthood. And DM made cake from scratch too, and those cakes I do remember. She never frosted cakes, and I suspect the reason I don't care for frosting is that I never had it as a child... So I'm not into store-bought cakes either. Dessert? A naval orange is usually my favorite dessert. Cookies tempt me, especially if they're home made. Of course, chocolate is in a class by itself, but it has to be a really good chocolate, dark chocolate preferably. Yesterday, we went to a store DH likes to shop in (I don't think I've ever been there without him) and we walked by a very small display of Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies, one of which was dark chocolate; the price? $1.99. I've never seen them under $2. I was sorely tempted. I have this sort of rule that cookies do NOT come into my house (except the Christmas cookies that a former co-worker of DH's makes every year). However, it's still the first half of March (when I allow more treats than during the second half of any month; WI is the first Friday of the month, so I pay much closer attention during the two weeks leading up to WI than the first two weeks after WI). Yes, I bought one container. Last night, I ate 3 cookies. This may be a first in my life; I generally eat at least one layer (probably 6 cookies) at a time...
For today's topic: can I bring a microwave oven with me? And maybe boneless skinless chicken breasts... and hope for enough greens and fruits that grow on the island that I'd have a large selection...

I guess if it is secluded enough that I'd have to forage for food, I guess I'd take something to cook with. As for a protein, I'd take a combination of rice and beans, which makes a complete protein. If I'd have to forage for food, I could fish, which would give me an additional protein.

Hi Ladies. Let's say we are staying a month or so.
So I was thinking of a small appliance (not a stove, because maybe the island has burnable wood on it ?).
My first thought was of a coffee machine because I could use the hot plate to cook on, but a blender/food processor might also be a good thing to have.
If I only get one protein (and all proteins are zero points) it would be eggs.
Tomorrow, we get a visit to a neighboring island that has a store to pick out 1 fruit and Sunday we will go again to get 1 veggie to bring back to our island.

I bought the pie. A marionberry one. I haven't had any yet, but I think I will cut it into about 16 small slices and freeze them.

I think I might have to consider a hot plate, even with burnable wood. It would be a luxury to have a consistent and easy heat source.
Not quite sure of the parameters of our adventure (which I'm having so much fun thinking about!), but perhaps a solar oven could be constructed if the island is in a location with strong sun and has some other resources - such as cardboard boxes and reflective foil.
Also, if I'd have to look my protein the face, I'd be a vegetarian very quickly. I'd be planning on beans, or as others have mentioned, eggs...but the chickens wouldn't become part of the meals!

Interesting question Jan. I’m thinking my appliance would be a microwave. The protein source I’d choose would be eggs.
Have a great weekend everyone.
