3. Pick an exercise that’s fun. Not all exercise happens in the gym. Like to climb rocks? Shoot hoops? Swing the bat? Start with the fun stuff and work your way up.
4. Bring a friend, make it competitive. Having a workout partner is one of the most effective ways to be accountable and make your workout fun. Making it a competition is also great for motivation.
Do you do any kind of the fun type exercise? Do you do exercise or walk sometimes with a friend?
I like to dance, and I dance by myself using as many body parts as I can. It takes care of the aerobic part. Since I live out in the country I don't go to a gym. I just do things at home, weights and strength exercises, some walking, although my knees don't like it much.

I took a few belly dancing classes and THAT was fun
Do you do exercise or walk sometimes with a friend? I used to enjoy walking with someone...made the time go faster and made me accountable. My knee is giving me trouble so am slowly building up laps again unless the knee says "NO WAY" and then will rethink things. I might need to set up the CD player and start dancing? We will see.

I find that dancing is less hard on my knees because I don't have to bend them as much and I can use all my other body parts while dancing.

fun exercise is an oxymoron 1. Fun - I know yesterday I said I continue to try to reshape my thoughts about exercise - but I had to laugh and agree with Cathy's statement. On the other hand, I also agree with Cherry and Cathy - dance is as close as it gets to fun for exercise. Walking is OK too, but not anything special, just tolerable. 2. Competition - competition really doesn't work for me. If I had to guess, probably because I wasn't all that good at sports/exercise when I was young. If there was competition in sports or athletics, it wasn't going to be a good outcome for me. Companionship/cooperation is a different thing - I could envision that walking etc. with someone would be motivational.

Dancing is a lot of fun. Sometimes I will just dance in the house. I used to go to Curves, that was a lot of fun, but the one near me has closed, now there is not one in my area. There are several gyms in the area, but I have used every excuse in the world not to join.
My walking partner is Jet, my little overweight dog. He needs the walk more than I do. LOL. He really is a lot of fun.

1. cathygeha , I too took belly dance classes when I was somewhere around 30... Looked for my red veil (with silver-colored thin rick-rack at the edges) a couple of days ago; couldn't find it... It's the only item I thought I had left, although someone gave me a set of zils a few months ago (she's not quite my age and does belly dancing regularly; her totally all-natural gray hair reaches lower than her waist).
2. I don't mind walking. There's a lake about a mile from my house. I enjoy walking along it (the path does not go all the way around it; apparently at some point the property line belonging to the county touches the edges of the lake, and the other side belongs to some other municipal department). I never walk it alone; either I go with a friend or two or else I don't walk it at all... I haven't walked it for more than a year (and I miss it...).
3. Competition is not a motivator for me, never has been. I do things I want to do BECAUSE I want to do them, not because I'm in some kind of competition with someone else (or with myself either).

3. Pick an exercise that’s fun. I would love to go rock climbing (in a gym, though and not on actual rocks) but none of my friends want to go so that is my excuse for not going. I have a basketball, and could walk the 3 blocks over to our church and shoot baskets, but what if I get there and someone is already using the court ? I find it harder to do somethings being single, but I do go to the gym by myself and I could play the Wii if I would just get off my duff. I have several Wii game CDs and really like them, just don't do them.
4. When I was training last spring for the half marathon, my friend who was also doing it and I went running 3-5 days a week. Not running it this year, so not doing that. One thing I have found that makes a walk go faster is to call a friend ( I will call my friend in Montana) and chat while I walk. Before I know it, I have caught up with my friend and walked a couple of miles.
Not sure if this will be one of the topics Cherry will bring up but I also find wearing a fitbit or some step tracking device really keeps me motivated to reach my step goal every day.

jan , I wore a pedometer some years ago (starting either early in the PointsPlus days or possibly late in the Momentum days). I found it was poorly made and kept breaking (anyway, not working correctly) and traded it in (at my WW center) several times... Then FitBit came out. At first, I had no interest in laying out more money for yet another device to count my steps (the bad taste of several WW devices was still fresh), but eventually another company (RBX) came out with something that vaguely resembled FitBit and cost under $30, so I gave it a try. It was fine. The plastic/rubber wristband finally cracked on the inside and then the crack went through the entire wristband, so I haven't worn it for about 3 weeks. I realize now that it was somewhat of a motivation to increase my daily steps, so I'm looking for something like a discounted FitBit. The Apple variety sends you messages every now and then (like, you haven't taken any steps for the last hour, or other more motivational messages) and I have absolutely no interest in having a device that tells me what to do... However, having a device that syncs to WW is of some interest to me now (the RBX didn't; it synced to my cell phone and then I manually had to enter the numbers into WW...).

I enjoy working out at Curves when my friends are there. Lots of laughter keeps us going. I also enjoy walking when I walk with dh. We like to walk around the neighborhood, so now waiting for consistent weather.
