There is no magic. The top of your WW range is the top of the normal BMI range.

My memory must be faulty---I would swear that the receptionist/weigh-in person, in the past, would write in a goal range during or shortly after registration. I wish I could find an old weigh-in booklet but I'm sure I've tossed all of them. Something like this---note the "goal weight" at the top (not filled in, but you get the idea): What really got me was that there is no place for a goal weight in the present FS recording booklet, neither a specific weight nor a range. Just struck me as odd.

fullmahina, I’m curious: in your account settings, in the weight section, does it show a goal weight? I’m wondering if the system sets it automatically or if it is left blank.

Yes it shows a goal weight but it is one that I entered a long time ago---higher than the recommended range which is stated under the goal weight box. I went into "settings" and tried to delete it but a message popped up saying "please enter a valid weight" and wouldn't accept a deletion.

I am on the website and it gives me a range. It shows an edit feature and I can change the goal weight to anything I want but I can't delete it. The goal was set by me originally, I think when I was doing the online program.

I get frustrated with the weight goal amount idea. I'll admit that I think I look the best within my normal BMI range, but at weights no less than 5 lbs below the highest weight in my range. Any less and I think I start looking too thin and not as sexy. For that reason, I rarely share my weight.
At my high BMI weight I've had people say they thought I looked 20 lbs less than I was. I'd just say "Yes, you guessed it." I'm big boned and have more muscle tone than most women my height, without looking too muscular. I had two WW leaders tell me my goal seemed too high. I think it's best to determine a goal late in the game, when you feel you look good/great and have hopefully lowered any bad blood work results.

Body fat measuring is technically a good idea, but can you imagine the lines? As a former receptionist, I for one would not want to do it. I didn't get paid enough to get that up close and personal with the members. Getting yelled at when they gained weight was enough to earn my dismal pay.

The devices the nurses used on me for measuring body fat didn't require any up front and personal anything. It was a handheld device you as the person being measured holds at arms length distance away from your body until it got what it needed. Not sure how it works exactly but it wasn't like the nurses had to make any kind of contact with me beyond handing me the device.

The handheld thing is probably the Omron Body Fat Analyzer (or something similar). It uses bioelectrical impededance analysis. I understand it is better than scale ones as the scales one just test the lower half of the body. I was seeing a trainer a couple of months ago and he used the Omron one (the handheld). It was several percent below what I test using DEXA scan. On my home scale, I test about 3 percentage points lower than the DEXA scan. That said, I think I can tell rate of change from it. But, I agree doing this would be super easy for WW to do. It is very easy although not as accurate as something like a DEXA scan.

Oh one more thing. The reason to test body composition is that it makes (or should make a difference in goal weight). Let's imagine someone who is 200 pounds and 50% body fat. That person has 100 pounds of lean body mass and 100 pounds of fat. Lets say she wants to be 31% body fat. That is the top end of the acceptable range. If she lost fat only (of course most people lose at least a little lean body mass when losing weight), she would want to lose 55 pounds of fat and end up at 145. At 140, she would have 100 pounds of lean body mass and 45 pounds of fat and would be 31% body fat -- top of the acceptable range for women.
Now imagine another person, who is also 200 pounds. But, she is 40% body fat. She has 120 pounds of lean body mass and 80 pounds of fat. For her to get to 31% body fat, she needs to lose only 26 pounds of fat. If she weighs 174 pounds and has 56 pounds of body fat then she is actually fine in terms of body composition. You don't actually need to lose lean body mass. What you need to lose is fat. Now -- it is possible that for this last person that 174 pounds would put her in the overweight range by BMI (depending on height). Still she isn't really overweight at that point. She might want to lose more fat to get to 25% body fat for example. But if she is content to be at 31% body fat she doesn't need to lose lean body mass.
Let's say I am Person 2 and I want to be at 25% body fat. Then it is OK to lose down to 160 assuming that I lose only fat and don't lose lean body mass to get there. But -- at my height -- even 160 is still in the overweight range although I am not really overweight at 25% body fat.

I think having people use the Omron in addition to the scale would be a great idea. My brother-in-law, who was doing the WW Freestyle plan online, got so frustrated with the plan that he gave up on it. He was trying to get to his BMI range because he gets an insurance discount at work if he does. He got to about 5 pounds over the top end of his BMI, but couldn't reach it. He lifts weights and works out a few times a week. I'm sure the extra weight was muscle, not fat. He looked really lean, to my eyes, too thin. I really don't believe in the BMI as the only thing that matters philosophy that is in place now.

borntexan , Holy carp! Did you really lose over 150 pounds? I'm so impressed. Congratulations to you for that!! Thanks.I can't say it was easy until I got closer to goal.I started on PP and then they changed to SP.I probably lost about an equal amount on both plans but now when I try PP I can't seem to stay within my points. So I try to do SP most of the time to maintain.I find it much harder than losing though.
