People over 60 have a different metabolism than those who are younger, and weight loss gets harder as one ages. This thread is for us.
Join us! Share your ideas, your successes, your frustrations. Offer support. Get advice from folks who are on a similar journey.
Our challenge is to stay on plan, exercise and keep trying to lose weight while improving our overall health -- and maintaining a positive attitude!
Think about where you were and how you felt when you made the initial decision to join The Senior WW Challenge. Close your eyes and remember when you said to yourself “Enough is enough and I’m getting in shape!” On a scale of 1 to 10, how serious are you? You really need to be an eight or higher! If not, you should probably reevaluate your thoughts and feelings about regaining great health in your life.
If the thread has not been started for a day, and you are ready to post, feel free to get us started.
Questions of the day: Monday: Karen E; Tuesday: Ann; Wednesday: Sharon; Thursday: Ruth; Friday: Recipe Sharing; Saturday: Karen C: Sunday: Gail.

Still not doing well this morning. Hope I can go with Fred to get Maybean, Bailey and Bridgette this afternoon. Supposed to get storms so it'll be good that Bridgette is home to be able to be held when the storms come.
We still want to go to New Orleans but Fred said maybe go on our own as when looking at the bus company's itinerary they will be doing a lot of nightlife stuff and we just aren't night people! Plus they say there will be a lot of long periods of standing and I find that is really bothering my back if standing for a long period. So I think I'll see what sites are recommended to be seen and what hotels are good in the French quarter and just do it as Fred also thinks we can do it a lot cheaper than $4,000!

Good morning!
It's a very rainy start to the day here in Indiana. It's a typical Sunday for me....church this morning and then relaxing at home this afternoon and doing some laundry. I have a very busy week ahead of me so I'm glad I don't have any big plans for today.
Sandy, planning your New Orleans vacation yourselves is a good idea. Any time we've gone anywhere on vacation we plan it ourselves. I've found that the library has several travel guides that are helpful. I've also gone online and requested visitor information from the various bureaus. They're happy to send you a packet of literature.
I had a good visit with my DD/DGD yesterday. I didn't buy anything at the gardening event at the fairgrounds yesterday but my DD bought some goats milk soap and lotion and Maya had fun making a hanging planter with the free flower she picked out.

Good morning. Sandy “merry Christmas”, I hear it’s snowing there. Good grief it was in the 50s yesterday. We will get a bit of rain later from the tail end of that storm.
Don and I might walk in the mall later.
Vicki great idea on visitors bureau. The internet has all that info too.
I have 1/2 a bone-in ham in the oven. We will have that for dinner and half a baked sweet potato and salad. Then I’ll divide it up and freeze for soups, etc. We like ham and beans soup and Don likes split pea. I am so over split pea. But I make a batch and freeze it in portions for him.
KC yesterday I made soup with the homemade vegetable broth. It was delicious and so flavorful. I didn’t have to add any seasonings because the flavors were there.
Don made reservations for camping and we will leave here Fathers Day in June. We will be back late August-early September. The hope is to get to Michigan with the camper later in the visit.
Now on with my day.....

Happy Sunday, all! I slept over 7.5 hours last night...feeling good. I read a scary article in the NY Times this week about the dangers of sitting for long periods. www.nytimes.com/2019/04/10/well/move/sitting-for-more-than-13-hours-a-day-may-sabotage-the-benefits-of-exercise.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fwell&action=click&contentCollection=well®ion=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=sectionfrontThe gist of this article is that sitting for most of the day could make us resistant to the usual metabolic benefits of exercise. We know, of course, that physical activity is good for us and being sedentary, for the most part, is not.Regular exercise reduces the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and many other chronic conditions. Even a single workout can improve our metabolisms, studies show, so that we burn fat more efficiently after meals and keep our blood sugar and insulin levels steady.Inactivity, meanwhile, has almost the opposite physiological effects. People who spend most of their waking hours sitting face heightened risks for many chronic diseases. They often also experience metabolic problems that raise the risk of diabetes and heart disease, including insulin resistance, poor blood sugar control and high levels of triglycerides, the fatty acids from food that linger in the blood if they are not metabolized. The results of an experience indicated that sitting for 13 hours a day for a period of 4 days slowed metabolism even after an evening of 1 hour spent on a treadmill. My Apple Watch (and Fitbit before that) reminds me to stand and walk around every hour. WW recommends that as well. I didn't realize how dangerous to your health it is if you do not do so. QOTD: What do you do to ensure that you are not too sedentary? Getting ready to travel home. I am taking the Acela, a luxurious way of getting back. Less dangerous, too. The normal Amtrak train is too bumpy a ride for me to safely make it to the restroom with my balance issues. I am worried about DD and DSIL. Live sees even more difficult for them than usual right now. Feel better, Sandy! Vicki, glad you had a good visit yesterday with DD and DGD. I saw some lovely apartments around here online. They do not have openings for me to see them today, but I am impressed. Swimming pool, fitness room, pets allowed, and beautiful. Thinking of spending winters in a warm place and the rest of the year near DD and clan. I need to get a plan in order SOON. Have a wonderful day, friends. I'll be back this afternoon when I am on the train. Gail

Greetings: Gail, I hope DD realizes that two issues were averted with you being there with the kids. DGS driving on his own and DGD going to the party. Kids are reliable and dependable and then they are faced with something. Your being there made for two good outcomes.
Today is DGS-18 birthday. He lives in Oregon.
Glad so many of us are signing up to commit to walking. It isn't required to sign up at AARP, but just commit to walking those 30 minutes every day starting May 1 through June 30. Think what a habit we'll build!
Gail, I agree. I'm convinced. I've read several articles about how sitting is the new smoking and so bad for you.
AOTD: What do you do to ensure that you are not too sedentary? I started years ago with a timer. In the evenings I'd set it and get up and walk a bit every 20 minutes. Now it's a bit different as I use the fitbit and it gets me up every hour to walk 250 steps. Same idea. Some days I don't get a great grand total of steps, but I am more attentive to getting up and moving through the day. Sometimes it's such a surprise to realize I've been sitting for an hour without moving and then I get the tickle from the fitbit. Mine went for a long time without the reminder and then one day it just started up again, which makes me very happy.
Hope sun today. I think we get sun tomorrow. Snow yesterday, again! But it's warm enough now it melted, mostly.
Had the boys yesterday morning. We made no bake cookies and they took every one home. They each made a batch with their own particular ingredients. Then we put the cookie sheets in the freezer. And DGS-8 learned how to make the jello salad. He was quite proud last night that he'd made something for dinner.
I went somewhere new yesterday for the afternoon program I wanted to attend and drove around and around the block until I figured how I could get ito the parking lot! Hilarious, but true.
Well, bummer. I usually watch CBS Sunday Morning, but when I started to watch it, it's the Masters! It's fine to watch the Masters, but I'd like the other, too. Oh well. I know a lot of people grumble about basketball during March Madness.
DGS-5 wants to come over today. They are selling some outgrown toys and there are some things here that fit that description. I think I'll try to get him to identify some that he doesn't play with anymore. Some really simple puzzles for sure and they are selling the train table and I've got a few boxes of train parts, so they should go together.

What If
by Delta Donahue
What if Just for a moment We stop And choose to believe That we are perfect Not just enough For that suggests A limitation in itself Perfect Unimaginably dazzling Clothed in Potential and possibility Howling with joyous abandonment For the richness of the landscape That frames our lives Dancing every step Whether winds are ferocious or calm Days turbulent or still What if Just for a moment We choose to say Yes
This is one of the poems of the poet I went to see yesterday. She'd written a poem a day for a year and published them in a book. This one is on her website. Just thought I'd share. This is Poetry month!

Masters started very early today Karen C because of the severe storms threatening the area later today. They announced the time change toward the end of yesterday's play. They did it for the safety of all the those involved at the course.

Oops...don't know where my morning post went.
Yesterday's QOTD: With what you've read recently and today, and what you know about yourself, what is one food or group that you know you should really excise from your diet. Or add to your diet. Can you plan to not eat that for the rest of the day or plan to put it in your meal snack plan for the rest of the day and see how you feel tomorrow? It might take more than tomorrow to feel it, but consider today as Day 1. AOTD: The biggest problem for me is when I eat my evening meal too late. Many times when friends want to go out they choose to go out much later than we are used to eating. What I have discovered is that if I eat a light meal at my normal time and just choose a small salad and soup or a light healthy appetizer I can enjoy my friends and not feel so icky at night and the next day. I also try to limit carbs at my evening meal. I do eat lots of veggies but limit bread and desserts to my noon meal.
Sandy, Sorry you got sick on the way home. Sometimes when we don't have control over the time we eat our meals and what we eat it can mess with our systems. Planning your own get away to New Orleans sounds like a better plan!
Jane, So proud of you for skipping the candy at the store. I also love the way you will modify the AARP challenge! BRAVO!

QOTD: What do you do to ensure that you are not too sedentary? AOTD: You all know me...grass does not grow under my feet. I usually have one day a week where I will do a lot of sitting, and because I am so active otherwise, I allow myself that. I do need to walk more. I am looking forward to the AARP challenge!

Yes, we need to move more...and too much sitting is not good...but ponder this: COMMIT TO SIT (and meditate). Meditation isn't as hard as you think. Don't block your thoughts...just sit quietly and watch them. Develop a 5 minute meditation practice.

Love the Acela! So smooth and quiet. I left my European crutches at DD's though and am uncomfortable without having at least one with me on a train. Plus they are not mine!!!
AOTD: I have not been as active as usual, but am working on doing more. I am going to pay. ore attention to the alerts on my Apple Watch to get up and move every hour. Plus now that the weather is nicer I want to take long walks.
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. – Joseph Addison
Thanks for the poem, Karen! Have you been able to do any writing lately?
You are a great role model for moving, Ruth. And for meditation. The Apple Watch has a sit and focus on breathing app which I have been using. And ahhh for chair yoga. Can't wait for Tuesday afternoon to do it again.
Getting to station. I'll check in again tonight.

Finally here. I went for gas at Costco and at 8:01 when I got there already a small line but I was able to pull up to a pump. I try to get there every other sunday before 8 and was a little late this morning. Church was less crowded and parking was a bit easier.
I have been watching Turner Classic Movie and actually LOL at the movie Good Humor Man.
We had a very tiny bit of rain---didn't even get the driveway wet.
As usual I need to get my line dance class together for tomorrow. With it on Sat. and then on Mon. I have no time to prepare so always rushed it seems.
I have been thinking of my Mother. She died 21 years ago today. I still miss her and wish she had a chance to know that Don and I met and that I had a good marriage. Many of the important people in my life were gone before I met Don so that made him even more important to me I think.
Time to do what I need to get done and turn off the TV movies.

It finally cooled off enough I could go for a pleasant walk. Two times around my long circle is 30 minutes. So I am ready for May 1. However if it’s hot or rainy I will go to the mall and walk.
Trying not to snack tonight.....
