Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. A nice day coming today. High of 70, for me that is just about perfect.
Pinky, what a great thing you taught your kids, about Memorial day! We do not go to any programs or parades anymore, as in the past we took our girls to the big parade in our area, they do that now. DH did not serve, as he has a plate in his head, from an injury when he was 2 years old. Both my Dad and his Dad served. I have all of my Dad's memorabillia from his time in the Navy, being at Pearl Harbor. DH has his Dad's things from being in the Army. Originally Monday's date with our elderly friends started as my wanting them to come here. That would have been perfect for DH, with him being able to relax and not have to worry about going up and down our stairs, but Nancy begged DH to have it at their house, and of course we gave in, what with them being so old; she is going to be 90 in July, and he will be 94 in August. Yes, I still go to therapy, I have it today, then next week, for the next couple weeks into June.
Marsha, good to see you back. What a neat idea, escaping from your family for a weekend! I have to give that some thought....but I think my DH would be lost without me. Yours is such a different situation, your really deserve to do that! Sorry you got stuck in the rain at the cemetery, you must have been freezing! DH has his moments, it looks like this will take a long while to recover from, but what the heck, all we have is a lot of time, so he just has to be patient.
Gareth, the wind is a big player in our area this year so far. Just about a month ago, with the way the wind was howling made for a lot of flooding in the area, with a couple of our rivers here being pushed back, which then had to flow over their banks. Really crazy weather all over the country this year. I was reading last night, about the tornadoes in Ohio, and then the tornadoes last night that even were posting tornado warnings into New York, and how of course climate warming is being blamed. The think I worry about is here in the US we can do things to bring down the emissions, but what about all the other big countries? I am rethinking that photobucket thing, I do not want to pay for it every month, and I am angry with this board that that was the only way for me to come up with to post pictures. I wasted so much time on trying to figure it out, before that was the only way I could see to do it. So I will be canceling that service.
Carol, I too want an air fryer, but of course do not know anything about them. I do know from what I have seen they are a healthier way of eating. About rhubarb pie, strawberry rhubarb pie is big here, at the bakery's. DH loves them but hardly ever gets them.
Robin, I read somewhere that as we age, our feet actually do get bigger. I was so sad to read that since I had big feet to begin with. But I am the only one in our little immediate family that has nice looking feet, just narrow enough. DH has wide short feet, and of course both daughters inherited his feet. It used to be hard to fit wide feet. I think the only casinos allowed now in the country, besides in the state of Nevada are just Native Americans. We have a lot of them in Wisconsin. (Casinos. Of course we have a lot of NA, as they settled here after leaving New York State.)
DH got his 2nd shingles shot yesterday. I signed up to get my first one there, so hopefully I will hear in a few months. I guess the sign up list is at 25 right now.
Therapy this morning, then this afternoon is time for my hair trim, color and highlight. Tomorrow morning is my knee doctor apt. If he brings up another surgery as an option, I will walk out the door. Then I have my yearly check up with my Oncologist in the afternoon. Crazy busy week, can't wait till Saturday!
Have a nice day everyone.

To be on the safe side walking this morning I took my umbrella along but it wasn't needed. What's needed is to start building an ark with all the rain we've been having. It rained again yesterday after I got to work and was still raining when I came home. My sister still isn't back home and it's been over three months now. Every time the water starts to go down it rains again and back up it comes. I read in last night's newspaper that this has been the longest in history for flooding along the Mississippi.
Strange about everyone's feet getting bigger after losing weight. It was the opposite with me. I went down a size to a 7 Except for only one Indian casino the rest of the casinos including the one here in our town when DS is a chef are state governed.
I do like my air fryer. The only problem is the size even having the larger one. I then I got a toaster oven with an air fryer since it was bigger but it only has one setting for air frying which doesn't seem to be a high enough temp so things don't come out like in my other air fryer. Wish I'd have spent more money and got a toaster oven where you can set the temp.
Karen, hopefully your Dr won't recommend more surgery but what if that's your only option for full recovery of your knee?
Just looked at the clock. Gotta get ready for work....

Gareth - toaster oven air fryer? I'm confused. My toaster oven has a convection oven on it as well as a regular oven and toaster settings. Very convenient for not heating up the house.
Karen - a busy week for you. I hope all the doctor visits go well.
I skipped my walk this morning. originally my buddy and I rescheduled yesterday for today but she texted last night that she wasn't going to go so hopefully tomorrow, then I got up and while I was deciding whether to go I remembered that my Monday meeting was moved to today so I would have been in a rush if I had gone on the walk, so I did a load of laundry instead. We skipped agility class last night as it was in the back lot at the kennel club instead of inside the barn at the fairground because of a festival at the fairground, and since it has been so wet we didn't want to bother with it. Plus dh has not been feeling well.

Cloudy here today but that is okay because they took the rain out of the forecast----WHEW!!! Hope it stays that way. Then there was rain forecasted for Saturday but now I see it says sunny Friday and Saturday and then rain possible Sunday and Monday. With a few good days and then some sun we could be back in the field. Time is ticking away now for planting so praying for a good couple of weeks. Supposed to get in the high 70's to 80 tomorrow so that will help with drying as well even if it is partly cloudy. As much as I don't care for wind that would also helpful in drying. I mowed all afternoon and into the evening last night so things are looking pretty good but I have a bunch of spots out in our driveway area where there is water standing or too wet and had to leave if for now so that looks kind of funny.
Gareth---I put The Lies We Told on my wish list---Thanks!
Robin---yes we have many Indian casino's in SD. We rarely go but once in awhile DH likes to play some blackjack--neither of us care for the slot machines and I kind of like blackjack as well but not somewhere like that. I prefer a private setting as to me the people at the casino's can get angry with you for your choices and I am self-conscious that they do not like the way I play so do not want to put myself in that position.
Karen--Keeping my fingers crossed that your Dr. likes your progress tomorrow. I wonder too if that is your only option would you turn down surgery again? I know I wouldn't want to go through it again either but if it will help that would be great too.
Gareth--What kind of air fryer do you have? Looking for recommendations.
On the shoe size---my feet have also got bigger over the years. When we were married I wore a size 6 1/2 and now I am a 7 1/2 or 8---usually the 8. I have been told having children does that to you.

Hi Marsha----what is it with the DH's on this board not feeling well?

Pinky, I like to play black jack too, but have not in a while, probably for the same reason as you. I don't agree with "playing by the book". I look at what has come out on the table, and decide if I think I will be more likely to get a high or low card. My DH likes to play too, but we would not go to any of the casinos that are relatively close to here for it. Once in a while we are somewhere that has one and he might stop in. He likes it on cruise ships, but in Alaska I don't think the casinos are open because they have to be in international waters.
Marsha, sorry your DH isn't feeling well too.
Karen, good luck with your Dr's appointment. I do know of some people who have needed a 2nd surgery for a knee. Hopefully that won't be you. As far as your friends, maybe they felt that the stairs were too much for them, so felt more comfortable in their own home. Stairs are definitely the hardest, walking can be OK, but even the 90 year olds who are the most fit may have problems on the stairs.
Gareth, I have a convection setting on both of my ovens, which is really not that different from the air fryer. For certain things, like oven baked fries, they come out much better. I don't want to have to worry about where to store an air fryer, I already have so many appliances.
I read about the tornadoes in Oklahoma City. Believe it or not, although it is rare, there have been tornadoes on Long Island. I specifically remember them on a day that my DH was at a charity golf outing, and I had to meet him. I wasn't out when the tornadoes hit, and they weren't near my office, but I had a terrible time driving around because of trees that were down.
Today is not going to be a hot day, and it is supposed to rain later in the afternoon. I will try to get home before it starts to get the dog walked.

Marsha, do a search on Amazon for toaster oven air fryers and a bunch show up. Mine's the Black and Decker. If I had it to do over I'd get the Cuisinart for more money. I got the Black and Decker too for it's size (doesn't take up much room on the counter) besides the price but from what I hear the Cuisinart works great. Emeril Lagasse also has one that looks nice too.
Pinky, my air fryer is Power. I'd really recommend though what I just told Marsha since the toaster ovens with air fryers are bigger so you don't have to air fry so much in batches.

Well, it’s always good to get home. A long drive, though, but for some reason we made better time coming back. I think we went a little faster! The bad part was that it was 45 DEGREES colder home than in NC! It was really beautiful there - sunny and warm but not humid.
We had a great time with our two grandsons. I must say, though, not much changed with DDIL’s mother holding and pretty much taking over DGS1. I’ve pretty much realized that the daughter-in-law and her mother are a twosome and I’m on the outside looking in most of the time - unless she isn’t around. Are those of you with the daughters the “favorite”? And those of you with the sons come in second? I’d love to hear your views. (Robin, take note!) DGS’s do see her a bit more as they are 10 hrs away and we’re 12.5. At any rate, we’ll ALL be down there again for DGS2’s first birthday in July.
I’ll try to post later for some personals. Right now I’m off to the grocery store and just wanted to stop in to say hi.

We got DDIL the Go Wise USA 7 in 1 Programmable Air Fryer. I got it from her Amazon wish list. I know nothing about them so I was happy she had picked one. We also got her a gluten-free cookbook.
We have 2 casinos close to us, both about 20 miles away in different directions. I know some people who would go every weekend. One won $10,000 and used part of it to get granite countertops. They have a lot of famous people perform. Of course, I can't remember who, but DD & DSIL went to one concert at one of the casinos.
After I lost weight, my shoe size went down half a size. It really depends on the shoe and what store I'm in.
Both my DF and FIL were in the Army in WW2. My dad stayed in the U.S., but FIL was in France. I don't know exactly when and he didn't talk about it much. He might have been there when they were liberating the concentration camps. One of DH's sisters insisted we have a flag ceremony at the funeral. MIL didn't have feelings about it 1 way or another so we had it. Taps being played gets me every time. Something strange-one of MIL's brothers was in the Pacific during WW2. DH's other sister thinks because of where he was that he was a survivor of both the Indianapolis sinking and the Bataan Death March. Umm, no way. He wasn't part of either of these things. I'm surprised she didn't decide he was one of the flag raisers on Iwo Jima. I know it was very unpleasant to say the least, but he wasn't in one of the famous things that went on there. DH had a college deferment, too, and when they did the lottery, his number was like 310. We did know a couple of men who were drafted.
A few friends and I had a mom's escape years ago. It was for 3 days and was fun. Sometimes our church will have woman's retreat where we would go to a hotel, usually, out of town and have speakers and things to do like that. It's been a while, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. Years ago when everyone was doing crafts (as one friend called it-pieces of wood with words on them) we would leave early, shop, and eat, shop some more, then eat dinner so it was pretty much a whole day away.
I'm reading Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. I've read all her other books. This one is fine, just not pulling me in as most do. Probably just need to get into it more.
I hope everyone's DHs are feeling better. Karen, hope your therapy is good and doesn't it feel good to get a cut and color?
I heard some distant thunder. They bumped up our chances of rain to 100%. As long as there are no tornadoes or damaging winds, I'm okay.

Robin----my thoughts exactly about blackjack. Sometimes I go by if I feel lucky or not.
Gareth---thanks for your thoughts on the air fryer. I had no idea you could get a toaster oven/airfryer. To be perfect honest I have never had a toaster oven or the desire to have one. My DMIL has one and loves it but I have just never felt the need. I may have to rethink it.
Anngie--Welcome back. I think that is probably the norm with a DMIL/DDIL. Since I have a daughter and 2 sons---yes I feel like with DD I am very much the favorite. With DDIL's, and I do want you to know that I have wonderful relationships with both, I know their DM's are #1. That's okay with me as I know they appreciate me, respect me and love me. Just not the same as their DM's. Of course I think I was probably the same way with my DMIL. Now that my own mother has been gone since 1991 I feel that my closeness to my DMIL has grown very much. I probably see it both ways having both sons and DD and yet I feel bad when you do just have sons that it seems that way. Just my thoughts on it not that it is right. I'm sure it is nothing against you with DDIL, just that she is close to her DM. Sorry it goes that way.
Carol--Thanks for sharing the brand name, I will have that to compare with Gareth's and my DD's(which I need to aske her the brand). I just came up for Nine Perfect Strangers in audio but need to finish Fall of Marigolds first. I had read reviews about NPS and many said the same as you as it not being one of her better books.

My dad was in WWII. He was in Africa, as he put it, following Rommel around the desert.
I love my toaster oven. I use it frequently, I roast veggies in it when it is just the two of us. I am careful about what I cook in it though as some things burn. Perfect for reheating pizza or making tuna melts.

This Memorial Day would also have been my dad’s 102nd birthday. He was 38 when I was born. He was a Captain in the army during WWII. Most of his time was spent in the South Pacific. I have often wondered if it is possible to get any information on his service of almost five years. I’d love to see the path he took “island hopping” as they called it. I don’t even know if it’s possible to get this info. DFIL was an MP in Europe.
Pinky, thanks, I feel a little better! Karen, good luck on those appointments! I love your patio! It must be so nice to sit with a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) and relax. Is that your new reading spot too? Marsha, I love my toaster oven too. It’s amazing what you can cook in one! I’ve broiled steaks too. Robin, my oven/microwave are also convection ovens. Do you use them often that way? I don’t. Probably should. You’re right, though, convection cooking is very similar to air frying. (I wonder how chicken wings would come out?!) Gareth, what will your sister find when she can return? Will the floors and walls be ruined? Carol, your DSIL is too funny! Nothing like embellishing the facts, right! Daughters love their dads, that’s all there is to it.
Still haven’t started California Girls - hopefully tonight. It’s not a problem to read while riding in a car but just didn’t do it. I certainly had the time!

Anngie, I am sure you are going to be right about not being #1 grandma. Maybe it won't be as bad with older DS because her parents line in Massachusetts, but she is very close to her DM so I am sure that might easily be the case. It can definitely be the case with my younger DS. Maybe you should make some trips there when the other DGM is not there.
I use the convection in my oven a lot, actually, I rarely use it on regular. It speeds up cooking time, it is amazing how fast you can roast a turkey in it, not that I make a whole turkey very often. It also makes roasted veggies and potatoes brown quicker, and nicer. I have a toaster oven that I use a lot. Because we have no gas in the house, my ovens are electric, so it is more economical to use the toaster oven if I can fit what I want in it.
Carol, I guess sometimes people make up stories to make themselves sound more important. My DF was only in the US. They wanted him to be an officer, but he didn't want to. My in-laws were in concentration camps, so did not arrive in the US until 1949. My DFIL was in the one that was in the movie Schindler's List.
I read Nine Perfect Strangers. It is like her others in the beginning in that it takes a long time to introduce the characters and you can mix them up. About 60% in, you get to a part that a lot of people thought was weird, as did I, and I almost stopped reading. I did like the end though.
It is supposed to start raining here soon, and really looks like it, but I got the dog walked, as the rain held off. I am thinking that DH will be able to eat something for dinner, and I am just going to make burgers without buns, with sauteed mushrooms. Hopefully he will be OK with that.
