So discouraging, losing just one pound a week

That's 52 lbs in a year. Sounds like a fantastic rate to me.

It beats gaining. I get wanting to see dramatic results, it's human nature. Aside from losing weight you are establishing new behaviors which will in time become habits, resulting in long term success.

I would be happy with that. Not jumping-over-the-moon ecstatic but happy.
When I am in losing mode I am lucky to average 1/2 to one pound per week. That's after figuring the initial semi-big drop of the first week and that's with the ups and downs both figured in. Once in a while there is a bit more of a loss or a gain but if I keep going, that's what I average.
52 pounds in a year---as previously said, a fantastic rate.

A safe losing rate is 0.5-2 lbs per week so at a 1 lb loss you are right in there.

I'm sorry, what's this "only" you speak of? The expected rate of weight loss is between .5 to 2 lbs per week. You are averaging within that range. The plan is working the way it is intended to. If you were expecting some sort of miracle weight loss, I've got news for you: the weight didn't go on overnight, and it's not going to come off overnight. It's going to take time. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Have patience, keep at it, and you WILL get to goal. Best of luck!

I've always said you never use "only" in relation to weight loss.

I'd take a 1 pound loss in a heartbeat! While we all want weight to magically melt away, that's not how it works. All those folks who lose weight super fast seem to gain it back super fast, too. Slow and steady is healthy and will get you where you want to be.
Also, if you haven't taken your measurements, do so regularly. Sometimes the scale moves slowly, but you lose inches. And that can be as big an ego boost as the scale number.

The focus of this isn't the weight loss. The focus is to build a new lifestyle that allows you to lose the weight and keep it off for the rest of your life. Worrying too much about the rate of your weight loss can end up discouraging you and you might give up. Concentrate on building a lifestyle you can live the rest of your life.
I lost 80 pounds at less than a pound a week. The longer it takes the more you learn about keeping it off and that is what matters.

Sometimes losses like 1 lb seem like little in one respect, but remember that it can be a matter of perspective. Have you bought a pound of turkey, ham or cheese at the deli in the past? Remember what that feels like in weight? Nowadays sugar is sold in 4 lb bags in the name brands. So that means a 4 lb loss (1.8 kg) will be like a bag of sugar in weight from your body. I think a bag of sugar is a whole lot of weight. I think a pound of ham weighs plenty, too. Even imagine a half pound of ham off your body.

I had a leader once who brought in 1# of chicken fat - that was an eye opener!

My other stock statement has been "It doesn't matter how long it takes to lose the weight, it's how long you keep it off".

To some degree it depends on how much you have to lose and where you are in terms of losing weight. Someone who has a lot of weight to lose and is early on at weight loss will usually expect to lose weight much faster than someone who is close to goal. I am 3.5 pounds away from weighing in at free LT again. I lose about .4 pounds a week and I am content with that. If I lost 1 pound a week consistently I would be over the moon. On the other hand, if I was just starting at weight loss and needed to lose 200 pounds then I might be less thrilled with losing 1 pound a week (although that would still be great).
It can sometimes help to think of losing weight as a percentage. I have read that .5% to 1% loss per week is "good." I don't actually meet that, but I am close to goal and am older and have been working on weight loss for a long time. In the end, though, it is maintaining the loss that matters.

I just think it is a good thing that you continue to lose each week.
