The real opening day of the Beck book review.
BBR Introduction
The big thing about the introduction is the author’s statement that it is not our fault that we can’t lose weight and keep it off. The actual problem is we don’t know how to do it successfully. The things dieters don’t know include:
How to motivate themselves
What to do when they are tempted to cheat
How to view slip-ups as mistake not a reason to give up
How to handle the feelings of being overwhelmed, hopeless, or unable to keep going
That they can learn how to manage their weight successfully
Another thing people don’t realize is that dieting has natural ups and downs, sometimes it is easy then it gets hard and then it is easy again. In this book you will learn how to manage all these situations so when things get hard you will know what to do. As you use your new skills things will get easier and easier.
If you get a chance read page 13. There is a list of things people learned from going through this program that they didn’t know before and that we will learn while going through the program.
With all the things that make weight management a success what are you looking forward to learn or what have you learned from previous reviews of the program?

Took the time to review the introduction and make notes. What I didn't know when it came to losing weight and maintaining my goal weight was how to manage the mental side of things. I knew that was my downfall but I didn't know how to fixit. Also I would stop when things got rough. While I did do preparation I didn't realize that I had to prepare every time I ate away from home. From the list on page 13 I now know: if I plan in advance I do better, I don't have to eat every time I think I am hungry, I need to eat healthy to stay satisfied, this is my life now I need to take the time to do what I need to do, I have to prepare myself to avoid sabotaging thinking, eating slowly really helps, not to let the mind run into the negatives, ...I've learned a lot.

I'll reply tonight as I'm going out of town for the next two days. Heaven knows I should know how to lose weight since I've been trying to do it almost my entire life! What eludes me is maintaining a loss. I guess I need to learn how to manage the mental side of things, and learn how to manage mindless between meal snacking. What makes me do this? Everything Judy said in the previous post applies to me too, so I won't repeat it. I know I feel healthier and look better at a lower weight. Maintaining it is essential. I hope that participating in this book review will help me come to terms with my frailties.

Thank you, Judy, for the start of this review. Thanks to you as well for sharing your discovery of Beck with us. It has been and continues to be the best resource for maintenance that I have found. There are always new "aha's" in each review, which is why I appreciate the review.
There are times when dieting is a breeze; I'm focused, in control and it seems to be the most natural way to live. And then there are the times when I don't want to read, talk or think about weight loss, maintaining or being disciplined. I call it "hitting my wall". It is usually, but not always, precipitated by a gain that results in weeks of clamping down with little or no result. I still get that feeling of being discouraged that can come with an array of sabatoging thoughts that leads to occasional panic. I have learned that I have always expected once I reach my goal weight that the struggle with food would end. However, the single most important insight I have gained is that even though my desire is to always feel positive about dieting, I am going to experience both ups and downs. Period. Accepting this and having a realistic expectation about the process has lessened the struggle with "hitting my wall".

msu91 You often say things that I'm feeling at that moment. I've also hit a wall and it's comforting to know I'm not the only one. I returned from a weekend trip with the usual uptick in my weight. I always attribute that to travel, eating differently, etc. but I know that the weight will drop after a few days at home. But, instead, my weight has jumped another 2# since getting home. Yikes! And, I've been OP and on track all week so it's frustrating to see the scale sitting there. This happened at Christmas and it took weeks to lose any of the weight I so quickly put on. This is when I used to just give up. I'm so happy we're starting another review. Obviously, I need a refresher!

This is the third time I've posted a reply. My husband is putting his office back together and every so often disconnects the internet. Anyway what I want to say I'm also having an uptick fo weight due to me overeating due to stress. I was improving but more stress hit but thankfully it looks like that is resolving. Today I told myself I didn't have to be perfect but I did have to think about each eating decision I make. Feeling some comfort from the idea of starting the Beck review because I know it will help to get me in shape.

We are leaving for a three week cruise March 6th so with this review I will read when I can but not participate as often. Linda, I've been tracking for several weeks and my weight is still bouncing up and down. This is my low point in the year when I have less energy and a low level depression. It doesn't help when the scale is sad too.

I am glad this review is coming at this time b/c I really need to learn how to maintain.After each weight loss in the past I would gain all my weight back and then some.This time I would like to stay within 3-5 lbs of my goal weight.I know maintaining won't be near as fun & exciting as losing so I need to get that mental image of this is where I need to be.I know there will be ups and downs on the scale and I need to learn how not to get discouraged with the ups.

Count me as also having a bit of an uptick - steroids and stress. With the warm weather on the way, the timing couldn't be better for nipping it in the bud and supporting that with a review. I've allowed my sabotaging thoughts to get the upper hand of late and even now can feel some resistance as I regather myself. That's a sure sign that I am in need of a group review.

I started the book and a review on the "other" board with mixed results (not as much support there...) Have learned A LOT so far and even though I haven't finished the book I am really glad to be 'starting over' to go back over those things that I definitely rebelled against. Going to try harder to be compliant!
Thankfully I've lost the bulk of my weight and am now in the 5th month of learning how to maintain--not finding it easy !!

That's a sure sign that I am in need of a group review. doordie, Steroids are tough. It can take a while to get things back under control again. Hang in there. I just had to have my thyroid meds (Cytomel) increased. And I'm kind of wondering if the steroids sort of caused this.
bbbearsmom, Be sure to review your plan for what to do in this situation. Don't beat yourself up, but do take it seriously. It can take a while to get things back to normal.

Hi all, I'm a bit confused, I thought the Intro was Thursday, so I'll just re post here what I wrote there..
I think the thing I'm most looking forward to learning and hopefully enacting, is dealing with cravings and being able to let them go without acting on them. I think this gets me into trouble a lot in the past.
I always have trouble staying OP when I travel and it seems like every time we do a Beck review I'm going away, and this time I depart on March 7, returning home March 24, so about 2.5 weeks away, and I'm departing a little over a week into the review. I will take my book with me, and I will try to 'read ahead on the plane' a bit so I have a reading cushion if you will. And I will try to post daily, but I'm just not sure how much time in the evening my workshop will take up so let's see. I do think it's interesting timing and a good opportunity to put into action what I learn since travel eating is my biggest challenge in my WLJ.
I have to say thought, one thing that struck me in a negative way as I read the Intro was that she refers to us as 'dieters'. I dislike that word a lot because it seems to imply something that people dabble in and usually without success, and it also seems to historically imply that the act of dieting is temporary and once one loses some weight they can 'stop dieting', which is what gets most of us gaining back weight again. I guess I'm surprised she uses this term rather than something that might imply lasting behavior change. I don't know if she changes that word further into the book, but I see she mentions 'WLJ' and I wish she'd refer to people losing weight in a different way, though I'm not sure what that word would be!

surfgirl I agree! I am very tired of being a "dieter"!! Have been on every diet known to mankind for my whole life and I don't want to be ON anything any more. LOL Maybe that's why sticking to a maintenance plan is a struggle. I just want to eat what I want, when I want. Of course that has never worked for me before so there is no reason for it to work now!! Skinny people and people who are perpetually thin aren't "dieters"... I want to be them!!
