Chapter 3 Answers
BBR Chapter 3 How Thin People Think Characteristics that make dieting difficult: #1: You confuse hunger with the desire to eat – I don’t do this anymore but I’ll eat even though I know it is only a desire to eat. #2: You have a low tolerance for hunger and cravings – I have a low tolerance for hunger. I manage cravings by keeping sweets out of the house. #3: You like feeling full – I’ve gotten use to not feeling full. I accept it because I know now how much I need to eat. #4: You fool yourself about how much you eat – I do this. For some reason there are times I think that calories don’t count. #5: You comfort yourself with food – I do this a little. #6: You feel helpless and hopeless when you gain weight – Like it a not I do feel this way even though I’ve had years of success and know what to do. #7: You focus on issues of unfairness – Don’t do this. #8: You stop dieting once you lose weight – Didn’t do this this time.

The characteristics that I relate to most from that list are:
#1: You confuse hunger with the desire to eat It's not really that I confuse hunger per se, I just eat when I'm bored, or at least that's what got me where I am today. I'm working on this daily though, and tracking helps a lot.
#2: You have a low tolerance for hunger and cravings This is me. If someone suggests getting pizza, or sharing dessert, it's hard for me to decline. I don't have a lot of cravings since I stopped buying spur of the moment junk.

Characteristics that make dieting difficult: #1: You confuse hunger with the desire to eat Sometimes...though I am not confused and do eat when not feeling hungry...there is some other motivation than hunger and I usually known what it is.
#2: You have a low tolerance for hunger and cravings Maybe give in to the cravings...never really get hungry or truly hungry
#3: You like feeling full Do NOT enjoy feeling full but sometimes it feels like the food expands after being eaten.
#4: You fool yourself about how much you eat Definitely...or just don't think about portion control...pasta can be over 2 cups in a serving without my even thinking about it.
#5: You comfort yourself with food Sometimes...
#6: You feel helpless and hopeless when you gain weight Not really but do sometimes question myself for letting it happen
#7: You focus on issues of unfairness No - it is what it is...
#8: You stop dieting once you lose weight Yes...have kept it off twice for about two years but then stop doing what it takes to keep the weight off.

I still like feeling full, but I keep it to twice a week.
Comfort self with food. I think I will always have this tendency, but I am aware of it, and try to rein it in and when I do indulge keep the food healthy, mostly.

#1: You confuse hunger with the desire to eat Absolutely! I eat when I'm not hungry just because I "want a little for taste" as my mother said. Or out of boredom.
#2: You have a low tolerance for hunger and cravings Yes. Especially when people at work start talking about being hungry, then I feel even hungrier and I'll eat something
#3: You like feeling full Not really
#4: You fool yourself about how much you eat Yes I over estimate a serving or how much I mindlessly ate sitting on the couch
#5: You comfort yourself with food Yes! This was a big thing when I was growing up. Every time my Dad lost his job the first thing we did was go out to Pizza hut (his favorite). My mom would give us food after a bad day at school, etc.
#6: You feel helpless and hopeless when you gain weight I get depressed and angry at myself
#7: You focus on issues of unfairness No
#8: You stop dieting once you lose weight I did really well for 5 years, continuing to diet. It's when the weight started to creep up little by little that I really gave up.
Which ones of these characteristics do you have?

3, 5, and 7 mostly
I like feeling full, but I don’t like feeling sick, and it seems like I’m missing the mark more and more these days
I do comfort myself with food, spending money works sometimes too, but I think I can find healthier forms of self-care
I do think it’s unfair, that some people eat like me and are thin, but some people eat like me and weigh even more and/or have weight related diseases. So I guess I just have to do me

All of these, at times. But I think the two issues for me lately are : fooling myself about how much I eat (subtly forgetting to track, etc) and comforting myself with food (a lifelong habit).

#1: You confuse hunger with the desire to eat - I don't really do this; I usually know I'm not truly hungry when I choose to eat while not hungry, but I do it anyway.
#3: You like feeling full - this one is big for me. I don't like being uncomfortably stuffed, but I do like to feel "full". I find it pleasant and comforting.
#5: You comfort yourself with food - this is the main one for me. Food is my go-to for all things self-care related and it's a problem.
#6: You feel helpless and hopeless when you gain weight - I do feel overwhelmed by how much I weigh. I also have very real doubts about my ability to intentionally lose weight and keep it off long term.
These are the big ones for me!
