Day 11 –Differentiate Between Hunger, Desire, and Cravings
This is a biggie!!!
Hunger: when you have fasted for several hours and your stomach is empty.
Desire to Eat: not being particularly hungry but eating because food is around.
Craving: physiological and emotionally intense urge to eat.
Beck reminds us that it can take up to 20 minutes for our satiety to reach our brains from our stomach.
Beck wants us to monitor these feelings for a day before, during, and after we eat.
Tell us your experience with hunger, desire to eat, and cravings and how you handle them.

I don't get many cravings lately. I eat plain food and that seems to keep the cravings down. My usual cravings are sweets and since I don't keep them in the house I would have to go out and get some, and I don't do that so I'm saved. I do get the desire to just eat. I've gotten pretty good at recognizing it and naming the feeling. I usually can wait until my next meal or snack. Hunger I have issues with, am scared of it. I'll overeat in case I might get hungry later. I feel like I have to eat now when I get hungry. Although for some reason in the evening I can put off eating when I'm hungry until I'm ready to eat dinner.

Cravings - don't get them often and when I do don't seem to have what I am craving in the house. Sometimes I ignore it and sometimes i try to come up with an alternate food to satisfy the cravinig (ice cream might be replaced with a thick smoothie)
Hunger: I don't often get hungry and usually feed myself when I do. I am home most of the time so am in charge of when and what I eat.

For me, I can go a long time without food and being hungry. Hunger doesn't usually bother me. I tend to do this during the day, because I'm so busy at work that I don't have time to even think about food. Then, I realize that I haven't really eaten all day and I overeat. I think part of that is feeling like I have permission to because I didn't eat during the day.
I don't get hugely strong cravings for food like I used to. This used to be much more of a problem, where I would get an idea in my head and have to basically "white knuckle" my way through it or give in. That doesn't happen so much anymore, but I'm also pretty good at eating what I want, when I want, if I really determine that I do want it. Sometimes I have passing thoughts, like a donut would be good with this breakfast sandwich, but I weigh whether I really want a donut or am just thinking about it because it's there, and make my decision based on that and how it will make me feel (a donut on top of a breakfast sandwich would make my stomach feel off and I know that, so it's easier to turn down).
I do get a desire to eat when food is around. I'm not very good at passing things up when they are there. If there is a platter of food out at a party or something, I will have a very hard time ignoring it even if I'm not hungry. Same with treats in the office (although these are rare at my current office).

I have a story. As you all probably know by now I have a thing for cupcakes. This morning there was an column/article in the local paper about a bakery in town that is known for its cupcakes. I have never been to this bakery. One time I thought about going but couldn't find it. It recently moved so now I know where it is. Well the writer does food/restaurant columns for the paper and he can write about food. Had an early afternoon appointment and when I was done with that I thought I could go by the bakery and get a cupcake, but I didn't. Glad I didn't because once I go to a bakery for a cupcake it will be so much easier for me to give into my cravings. I have had the thought of getting a couple and going over to my friend's house and have coffee and cupcakes with her, but that has been an idea at least for a couple of years and we just never coordinate it. What happened is the article/column triggered me now I'm wondering how long I will have cupcakes on the brain.

I don't get that many cravings but when I do it's usually salty/crunchy chip type things so I have some pretzels and that quells it.

I have a problem with the desire to eat. Something on TV looks good, people are work are talking about food, food is around.
My mom used to say "just a bite for taste" when she was all done. Basically meaning she was full but eating because it tasted good. I have to deal with that.
I do have some craving, but it's more the desire because I want the taste or am bored or tired.
