Day 12 – Practice Hunger Tolerance
Today is the day (if you want to) you skip lunch, track your hunger discomfort scale, and see how well you tolerate hunger. Beck explains that hunger may seem intense but those feelings often go away and become tolerable.
Beck maintains that a lot of unnecessary eating is done because people are afraid of hunger when you don’t need to be afraid of hunger.
Are you going to do this today or another day? If so, let us know the result. If you have done it previously let us know how you did when you did it. If you are not going to do it let us know why.

I have done this twice and will not being doing it today (Friday). The first time I did it I did it during the March review and had a very rough time. It was like the grinchies on steroids. Once I could eat it was still a couple of hours or so before I could post and be civil. The next time I did it was during a July review and I did fine. I was tired of being hungry but mentally my mood didn't shift. I stay away from getting hungry because I don't know how I'll react and I don't want to become hangry if I'm around people.

I finally did this last round and was so glad I did. It made me realize that it's actually not that difficult for me to do this. I think I ended it like an hour earlier than planned but it was okay and I was fine. In the past I made a lot of excuses as to why I wasn't going to do this, and I had to be honest that I was making excuses so I just went for it last time.
Tomorrow I have an acupuncture appointment at 3:45 and they want you to eat something beforehand. So I'll do this earlier in the day, eat an earlier breakfast, and have a small snack before my appointment.
I think going through this is an essential part of the Beck approach because CBT only works if one is willing to do the homework they're asked to do (I mean that about any CBT, not just weight loss).

I am not sure if I will or not. I am off to see a friend, let her cut my hair then will return home. I may or may not do this experiment. I have skipped meals in the past and find that if busy I am fine. On our trip south I had water but not a meal one day...everyone else had lunch but I had only water. If I am focused on something the "hunger" is there but I am not focused on the hunger. I may give it a try...or not. Will see what I am doing at lunch time and what is on the agenda for the rest of the day by then.

I won't be doing this as I don't do well skipping meals. Sometimes I can snack for a meal but don't do well skipping meals.

Would’ve loved to - and usually do it every time - but I’m on a strenuous trip (not sure if there’s a different kind with my adventurous husband and two active kids) so I need to have energy and an even temper. Those don’t go hand in hand with skipping a meal.
That being said, what a powerful exercise. In the past, I have learned hunger pain is very minuscule and ebbs and flows. Also, a normal size meal for dinner will, in fact, cure my hunger. No need to overeat just because I missed lunch. And snack for that matter.
Good luck to anyone doing it this round!

I don't feel the need to do this experiment because I often go without a lunch due to my schedule. I know exactly how hunger affects me - it makes me nauseated for the most part. I also go without eating for entire days, only eating my dinner, if I have stressful work meetings going on.
It's what happens after I go for long periods without eating that I need to work on. I need to refrain from overeating after that, which I am actively working on right now.
I may try this at a later date, just to do it intentionally and for the purposes of the exercise, but that won't be today, as I've already brought my lunch and have a plan for my eating for the day. Tomorrow is my WI and I really want to stay OP this entire week.

I always skip dinner on Wednesdays because that is my big lunch treat day, and I skip lunch on Fridays as it is pizza/wine night. I have always had no problem tolerating hunger.

Won't be doing this today. Dealing with the aftermath of a really bad migraine yesterday. So not eating would not be helpful.
I am working on asking myself if I'm hungry (pains), craving (want a certain food) or just want to eat (tired, bored, etc)

I've decided to skip the snack before acupuncture and just do the fast until about 6pm. It's pretty easy to do once you realize that you're not going to die of starvation. Let's face it, most of us who're in losing mode have plenty of 'reserves' so I just tell myself my body can make due with what it's got stored up...!

Well, I'm done with the exercise! I ended it about 20 minutes early because I was feeling light headed after acupuncture, but interestingly, the actual session felt more powerful on an empty stomach. As irisinnia said, it is a powerful exercise. I'm actually enjoying it because again, it makes me remember that I'm not going to starve if I don't eat for the better part of the day. For those hesitant to do this, I recommend having a late breakfast, that helps a lot!

surfgirl, I always have a better meditation experience on an empty stomach. Good to know it works for acupuncture too.
