Ways your body tells you when it needs water: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?ID=2478(see article in link for full explanations of the items below) With 60 percent of our bodies comprised of water, it might seem strange that roughly three-quarters of Americans could be chronically dehydrated. According to the CDC, dehydration can contribute to mood swings, lack of mental focus, constipation, kidney stones and overheating, among other conditions. …the human body offers plenty of cues that it’s time to hydrate. All you have to do is listen up—and then drink up. Thirst and/or hunger: When you feel parched, it's because the body is already dehydrated and is telling you it’s time to drink… Urine changes: “…The darker the urine, the more dehydrated a person is." Fatigue: "Once your hydration levels drop, your body slows down these processes, making you feel tired and fatigued” Dry skin and lips: …when you are dehydrated, your body works to pull water from various parts of the body, like the lips and the skin, in order to hydrate the cells. Lightheadedness or dizziness: When you don’t replenish the fluids your body has lost, less oxygen will be carried to the brain and your blood pressure could drop—an equation for feeling woozy. Skin "pinch test": One quick way to check hydration levels is to pinch the back of your hand. If the skin doesn’t quickly return to normal, it could be an indication that you need water... Excess saliva: "Our bodies are incredible at adapting, and will produce more saliva to keep the mouth and throat lubricated," Muscle cramps: There are many factors that can cause muscle cramps, but among them is a depletion of fluids. Are you good at staying on top of hydration? Do you notice any of these signs? Did you know they were indications of dehydration?

I stay hydrated most of the time. If I am going to be away from home without known rest stops on the trip I am less likely to be as hydrated as when home.
I have seen all of the mentioned ways of knowing dehydration is happening...but it was good to refresh my memory...specially in summer heat.

I do pretty well staying hydrated. Most of the time I drink at least 6 glasses of water a day, sometimes more, occasionally less. I think I've been aware of most of those ways of identifying dehydration. Mostly I just know when I need to drink something.

I drink a lot, already this morning, I have had 2 cups of coffee & a large glass of ice water, that's just with breakfast. I do often drink the flavored waters (probably not a good thing), as I get so tired of plain water.

I'm with Cherry on this. I make more than 64 ounces of herbal tea every morning, pour into travel mugs and take them with me all day. Sometimes I finish everything before going to bed, and sometimes I refrigerate one or at most 2 of the mugs (two mugs gave a 16 ounce capacity, one has 20 and one has 24), so I drink anywhere from 30 to 68ish ounces a day. Since I add nothing to the herbal tea, I consider what I drink to be slightly colored and slightly flavored water (one teabag for the entire 64 to 68 ounces of water, 8-cup Pyrex measuring cup, into the microwave while I shower and dress)...

Staying hydrated is something that does sometimes get away from me. I'm really trying to be more aware. I hadn't heard of excess saliva being a sign of dehydration.
Feeling dizzy is one that can affect me, but usually notice some of the others before that. With the hotter temps here this week, I've really been trying to stay more aware and be proactive about drinking - and choosing water!

I will grab a bottle/jug of water if I am going to be away for home or out in the sun for any length of time, especially in the summer. In my last 2 half marathons, I got really bad leg cramps at around miles 11-12. I find it hard to run and drink water (without stopping) so I am sure that it was the result of not drinking enough and getting dehydrated. Thanks Judy for hosting this week. Hopefully I will remember that I am this coming week's host. I remember now, but it is still many hours before I have to remember to post for tomorrow.

Thanks for a great week Judy.
I’ve been focusing on drinking more but hadn’t considered the physical signs. Thanks for the list.
