Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Cloudy out, humid and warm. They are warning us that tomorrow and Friday are going to be scorchers Heat indexes could be over 100. I keep remembering this past winter and that horrible, horrible spring that seemed to just finally get done, and figure what the heck, at least we can go about our business, and we are not getting flooded!
Gareth, I see you too are having this beautiful weather.....(20" of snow, wind chill of -40 anyone? lol!!!) I had a feeling you had tried melatonin. You don't want to try sleeping pills? They can give you a very low dose. I can't be without mine. My sleeping pill helps me stay asleep. Some nights, depending on my day, I still wake during the night. So it is not the be all, end all, but it helps me a lot. Yes, I love the program, my whole issue is getting into the frame of mind to do the program, especially long term.
Carol, is the temps your getting unusual for your area of Texas? From now thru September is a long time to have the very hot temps. That would be like us having below 0 temps for months on end in the winter. No thanks! But I guess there is nothing we can do to change the weather, is there? Have you tried the newest WW program? The only problem I have is my DH. Since I truly love chicken, and chicken is 0 points, I am happy eating it a lot, but he gets very ticked at me if I make it more than, say, once a week. So I have to try and sneak it into some kind of dish, but then he does bust me sometimes, lol.
Robin, when I go back to a WW program, no matter which program it is, I follow it faithfully, as it is written, to really make sure I am doing it right. I do not cheat, as you are saying, to eat 0 point food and junk for the rest. I have not had potatoes for weeks, bread for a couple weeks, and so on. My cheat items might be the rice cakes, love the carmel, at only 2 points they are good. I cut way back on wine, just do not want to be drinking my points. Eating more fruits and veggies right now is such a win win, with so much fresh stuff out there. I printed a recipe from WW for Blueberry muffins, a regular size muffin is only 3 points, will be making that over the weekend. So no, I am not doing the program the way you think.
Pinky, hello!!! Glad you could stop in to say hi. Hope you get some me time today.
This week has really turned on me. First the appetizer get together here Monday. Tomorrow it is our sibling birthday lunch out. Now sister wants us all to come back here after and have birthday cake. CAKE? CAKE?? Did someone say CAKE? Lol...one of my true loves is just about any kind of cake....so ok, we will do that also. Then DD2 called, asking us to babysit Bennett and Lilly late Friday afternoon so they could go to some brewery, then out for dinner. So looks like we are taking the 2 grands out for dinner, to celebrate Grandpa's birthday...which is today. Then Sunday we are going back to their house for a cookout, for his birthday.
I do not feel like going to the Y this morning, but with the look of this week, I better drag my body over there.
Have a nice day everyone.

Running short of time but wanted to stop by here quick. Sunny, hot and humid already this morning. I was dripping by the end of my walk. Slept better last night. Only awake one time and right back to sleep. Why can't I sleep like that more often?! Karen, no matter how low a dose I've tried with a sleeping aid it leaves me too groggy the next morning. I have to be so careful with any kind of meds because of the type of colitis I have causes me GI distress. I can't have any NSAIDS at all. Robin, I gave up caffeine years ago. Even small doses of caffeine left me too jittery.
Wrapping my head around the fact that my son turns 50 today. I may look like it (ok I do!) but I don't feel like I'm old enough to have a son turning a half century today! Where has the time gone?! Gotta get a shower, breakfast and then off to work....

Karen, I don't think eating potatoes or caramel rice cakes are "cheating". I think when people have that philosophy it is not good. There is certainly nothing wrong with potatoes, as long as you weigh and measure. Same with bread, especially the light bread. I don't know what people are using all their 23 points on if they are not eating any carbs at all besides those that are now 0 points.
Gareth, happy birthday to your DS. I know we can never believe that either we are getting so old, or our children are.
We are also having beastly hot weather for the next few days, although I think Marsha, who should be back from AZ, had it worse there. I know they say it's a dry heat, but I say, so what, you are in an oven not a sauna. Still very hot. We are going to get up to 98 on Saturday. We are going to our friends house in the close in Hamptons, so only about an hour away from us, and I am really hoping it is cooler there because it's closer to the water, and that we stay inside! It was hot enough here this morning that I saw a lot of people out walking earlier than normal when I was out with the dog. I said hello and remarked about that to a woman, and she stopped to tell me that she just got let go from her job after 18 years because they wanted a younger person who knew video. She worked for a very large commercial real estate company that owns strip malls and shopping centers around the country. Not really what I needed to think about, but I let her talk anyway.
Waiting to take DH to the airport. He is flying to Boston for a conference. It's not far but he didn't want to drive by himself.

OMG is it hot and humid - high 90’s. It’s supposed to be like this until Monday when it drops to 79!
No problems at all with this tooth extraction but the anesthesia made me so tired that I went home and slept. Unfortunately I now have a summer cold and coughed most of last night. Poor DH, he didn’t sleep much either.
Hopefully my plan will work, but since I’ve been with WW a number of years and know how it works, I’ve decided to use what I’ve learned and “live” it. I’ve cut way back on portions and have eliminated even more carbs. Not completely, though. I feel WW has taught us all a lifestyle so it’s time to just do it. I’ve lost about 4 lbs. Always slow going for me!
Karen, how funny to sneak in chicken! I could never sneak anything in on my DH - he can spot it before it even hits his plate.
Robin, how unfortunate for that lady - how old would you guess she was? How nice that you all could get together with your family the other night! When we’re together I just look at my DS’s with such pride! I’m sure you’re the same way!
Gareth, I’ve tried melatonin as well - with little to no results. Are you in pain as well? If so, Aleve PM is somewhat helpful. Happy birthday to your DS! (we’re not getting older - just they are).
Hi Pinky!
Carol, I agree, I no longer announce that I’m trying to lose weight. When it becomes noticeable and it’s mentioned, then I might say something.
Finished Remarkable Creatures. It ended well, but plodded along. Glad I didn’t use the 100 page rule, though - just not sure I’d recommend it.

I'm back. It was beastly hot in AZ. I think 114? I didn't even bother to check the news and find out. We didn't go out much but of course when we did leave the house it was to run an errand so the "outside" part was walking through a parking lot where the heat is reflecting up so even hotter. The first day when we went out I didn't think to bring something to cover the steering wheel so when I got back in the car it was too hot to touch. The second day I brought a towel which meant I could touch the steering wheel but it was still very hot. Even my mother complained about the heat.
I finished What She Left Behind. I thought it was good but it was 2 parallel stories and I didn't think the wrapped one of them up very well at all. I have Becoming so I guess that is next.

Anngie, it's always hard for me to tell how old people are. I would say it could be anywhere from 55 to 65, she was definitely not young. Seeing as when one of my neighbors, who is my dentist, was telling me about his mother buying a condo in a small building near us. I said I heard it was very nice, and he says, "well you know, you have to be 62 to move in." in a way that made me think he did not think I was 62. I told him I was turning 66, and he was shocked. I guess he didn't know I had spoken to his assistant about dental insurance now that I am on Medicare, and whether one of the plans was worth it.
Good idea Anngie to cut down, that is what I keep trying to do. I know I should track though, but it is so slow and so frustrating.
Marsha, I have even had that with the steering wheel when it gets hot at home. I feel sorry for your mom having to walk any distance in that heat. Welcome back. I think you will like Becoming. If you are struggling a bit in the beginning, keep going. I thought the beginning jumped around a lot, but then it gets really good.

Yes, summer in Texas lasts a long time and it can be very hot. I know this was almost 40 years ago, but in 1980 it got up to at least 100 for like 45 days. Oh, and no rain. Towns were limiting days you could water your lawn. We were in our first house in Dallas. It was small and had window air conditioners. We would leave them running when we went to work because of the cats. It was at the end of this that we moved to where we are now. We looked at one house that had a beautiful back yard. The realtor said they must have cheated and watered when they weren't supposed to. It was a little over a year later that our town had its first "hundred year flood." My DH says it's not hot until it gets up to 100 which I think is bull.
I don't remember completely eliminating anything when I was doing WW. We ate chicken at lot and still do. The one thing we didn't eat much of was pizza. The first time we had it, we very carefully figured points and how many extras we had. Weighing and measuring things was an eye-opener=how much a chicken breast weighed and what a cup of Cheerios looked like. One time I was standing at the dessert table at a church pot luck and a man said "nothing here that's on your diet." I said "everything is on my diet" and that's what I like about WW.
Anngie, good you have no other side effects with your tooth extraction except sleeping.
I take a pill for migraines every day 2 hours before bedtime. It helps me sleep. The doctor emphasized to take it only at night. It's one of those where you shouldn't drive or operate heavy machinery. My DS has migraines, too, and he takes the same thing.
Happy birthday to everyone's family members. Try to keep cool or at least comfortable everybody.

Robin - thanks for the tip on Becoming. It makes a difference to know it will pick up if I'm frustrated with it at the start.
WW permits everything but if I allow myself the sweets I tend to have trouble with moderation, plus they take up so many points in my day. I, too, really need to start journaling. I know it is the only way I can be successful. I have not been happy with the way I look lately and I am frustrated that I got so close to "healthy" then turned around and started gaining. And can't seem to get my head back to that "successful" place.

Carol, my DH says it's hot once it goes to 75! We are staying just below 90 today it looks like, but I know how hot it can get in the south. I had the same thing happen to me with food. We were eating salads, and they gave us bread sticks, and someone said, oh you can't have that can you? With pizza, what I said in the beginning was that I would rather wear a Size 10 than eat pizza or a bagel. I do it pizza every now and then now, but only 1 slice. I just realized I started WW 8 1/2 years ago. So since then, I think I only ate 2 slices at one time once, and it was this past winter. I can't remember the last time I had a whole bagel. Our NY bagels weigh so much that they are tons of points. I have a half every now and then. The other 2 things that are really high in points that I don't think we ever realize is the big muffins from a deli, and scones.
Marsha, there are interesting parts in the beginning of Becoming, it's just not a smooth read.

Hi Friends! I sound like a broken record when I say we had another rain shower this morning. Not a lot of rain but everything is wet again and nasty storms to the south of us as in southern SD. Could be a repeat tonight.
I meet a DF for coffee this morning and have been catching up on office work since I came home. DS is taking DDIL out to eat tonight and their kids are coming here so better get a couple of things wrapped up so I am ready for them but wanted to say HI!!!
