Day 19 - Stop Fooling Yourself
Dieters have an amazing ability to delude themselves about food.
Do you give yourself a “fake” excuse to eat?
It’s okay to eat this because… It’s not a whole piece I’ll eat it only this one time It’s not that fattening I’ll make up for it by eating less later It won’t matter I paid for it It’ll go to waste I’ll disappoint someone if I don’t Everyone els is eating it I’m celebrating No one will see me eating it It’s just the crumbs It’s free I really want it It’s a special occasion I’m upset and I just don’t care I’m craving it, and I’ll probably just eat it eventually
Create a “It’s Not Okay” Response card and pull it out whenever you think you’re at risk of not following your plan.
Measuring Up!
If your diet calls for you to measure the quantity of food you’re supposed to eat, don’t fool yourself into thinking you can accurately estimate it instead. You won’t have to measure food for the rest of your life as soon as you become adept at visualizing portion sizes you can stop. Of course when you introduce a new food you need to measure it. It’s good to measure foods periodically to make sure you’re still estimating portion sizes accurately.
How are you doing with not "fooling yourself"? Do you use any of the "fake" excuses? Do you measure your food: always, sometimes, never?

I do use "fake" excuses sometimes: * It is only one day a week * I don't make this at home * etc
I measure my food sometimes...not every time

My main one is it's only a crumb or only one bite.

I am unable to fool myself anymore. I weigh and measure everything when eating at home.

At times I can fool myself - well, it's not really fooling because I know the consequences. But it's usually along the lines of "I haven't had this in a long time so one time won't hurt too much."

I am constantly fooling myself. To handle it I need to react more to sabotaging thoughts. This week my big one was: I "feel" like having take out. I do weigh and measure my food everyday because I know I go into portion creep.

I am constantly fooling myself. To handle it I need to react more to sabotaging thoughts. This week my big one was: I "feel" like having take out. I do weigh and measure my food everyday because I know I go into portion creep. Judy, this reminded me that I realized about midday today why I didn't have a loss today at WI. It was because last week, in addition to our regular Friday night out dinner, we went to a movie and ate at the movie theatre (fries were involved), and on Sunday evening I was tired and it was hot, so my husband offered to get dinner from our Friday night place. It's not that it's high points food, but I had meals out three times last week and lunch on the road yesterday. I guess I fooled myself into thinking I could compensate the rest of the week, but no matter how careful one is eating at restaurants or take out, there's a ton of sodium in non-home cooked food and that equals water retention. Silly me!

It’s okay to eat this because…- YES
It’s not a whole piece- YES
I’ll eat it only this one time- YES
It’s not that fattening- YES
I’ll make up for it by eating less later- YES
It won’t matter- YES
I paid for it- YES
It’ll go to waste- YES- I'm working on the "wasted in the trash or waisted on my body" theory from the book
I’ll disappoint someone if I don’t- NO
Everyone els is eating it- NO
I’m celebrating- yes
No one will see me eating it- a little bit. This will lead to serious overeating such as a full jar of P-nut butter
It’s just the crumbs- Yes
It’s free- Not really
I really want it- yes
It’s a special occasion- Absolutely
I’m upset and I just don’t care- Absolutely
I’m craving it, and I’ll probably just eat it eventually-sometimes.
I guess I do fool myself a lot. Need to work on this
