I saw this on a friend's Facebook page and shared then asked on Twitter and so far some have said perhaps for poaching eggs. We are stumped...any idea what it is used for?

I’d take a guess and say industrial egg poacher, otherwise no clue.

Is there a brand name on it anywhere?

I agree---restaurant or catering hall egg poacher, probably drops into a big roasting pan sort of base? Eggs benedict for the masses!
It really looks very well made, stainless steel. It's kinda cool.

I was thinking maybe a dinner roll form of some kind lol Maybe Chinese steamed buns? Bao buns? That would make sense too but all the ones that I've ever had have been made in bamboo baskets. High-end Asian restaurant bao char siu, lol. I am thinking that it would be something that is steamed or poached. I did a reverse google image search and came up with nothing but that google image search thing rarely works for me.

I would say egg poacher also. Fits in a roasting pan. Lift the whole thing out of the water, put a sheet pan on top and flip it to release the eggs onto the pan. Easy to dish out.
I can't quite figure out the point of the holes though.

I can't quite figure out the point of the holes though. I would think it would be for drainage of the water in which the eggs are poached? Otherwise you'd be flipping over a load of boiling water when you flipped over the eggs. Looking at it really closely it looks like those cups are removable so I'm thinking that there is no flipping involved, just lifting out individually. Flipping might cause the yolks to break, too, a disaster in the world of poached eggs...nope, no flipping.

I just couldn't figure out how you would get the eggs out easily because they looked attached to me this morning. Now that you said that I can see that the cups are probably just resting on the crosspieces.

Thanks to a persistent searcher...first person who posted it that I know of found it online and it is a: 16-Cavity Stainless Steel Appetizer Pan - BBQ Almost Anything! I did consider cooking/poaching oysters on the half shell (though I don't eat them) in something like this but NEVER thought of barbecuing with it!

Now we know what it is. But it is sold out! And it was a bargain price, too.
I had thought of meatballs but rejected the idea and NEVER thought about using it in a BBQ.

Never thought of BBQ. I bet it would work for egg poaching though.
That was a fun read. We should do a "what is it" more often.
