Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Beautiful start to the day. Nice...no humidity. Still thousands of people around the area without power. State of Wisconsin has been declared a state of emergency. Confirmed 4 tornadoes in the greater Northeast Wi. area from the weekend. Some areas look like war zones, and lots of woods lost, trees just sheared off. Such a shame.
Robin, vertigo is so scary. I hope it goes away. I had something like that years ago, the year I was diagnosed with cancer. Also, when I moved my head, (that is when I would get very dizzy) I could heard crunching sounds in my ear. I was told it was crystals in my ear. Never heard of that before. How hot did it get there, yesterday? My nephew, who lives in NY messaged DH saying it was 104. About that whole thing at Walmart, DH and I were the first ones in the back room. That small bench thing was empty, and with my crappy knee, I sat down, and DH sat next to me. Then the people poured in, most of them way younger than us. I was not going to give up my seat for them. Then some people came in with wheel chairs, so they were set. Also, WM brought out a lot of chairs. Then the woman with the cane came in. After sitting awhile, my back was aching, so I got up and DH sat down where I was sitting, and I just walked around, and eventually made it to right outside of that room, where some people were standing. We were all just chit chatting, and that was when they announced the all clear. But that woman that sat down by me, with the cane, honest to Pete, I would have never recognized her. Even after she said who she is, I still didn't.
Yesterday turned into a weird day. Our elderly friends north of us by about 20 miles lost power Saturday, with a comment from the energy company that it could be days before it comes back on. Their daughter, who lives on the western side of the state was there for the weekend, but had to go back home yesterday was trying to get them go back with her, till their power came back on. They refused. DH ran up there, to help Tom install a battery in his sump pump, to keep it running, so it wouldn't flood. Anyway, in the meantime, I offered that they could come here and stay, and they could each have a bedroom. DH let me know that they accepted, so I striped both beds, got the washer going with the sheets, cleaned up a little, got my shower, and off I went to the store, as I didn't have anything planned for dinner, since we were supposed to go to DD's for a BBQ, which we rescheduled for next weekend. Bought ham sliced for sandwiches, with quite a few side dishes from the deli, and came home. When I turned into our garage, DH called me, and guess what? Yep, their power came on. Grrrr....
Earlier, when DH left to go to their house, around 8:30, he dug up his walking stick for me, and off I went! The weather was so beautiful, but I forgot, as it was the first time in so long that I walked outdoors, to turn on my app to track my walk. I realized my error half way to my turn around point, so I am thinking I walked 3/4 of a mile. I will continue to do more walking out here. I remember hearing, years ago that walking on a treadmill is harder on the body, than walking outside, and that may be true.
DH has his annual physical this morning. I will not be going with him, as there is nothing serious that needs to be discussed. So I will again go out with the walking stick, tho this time I will have my walking app set correctly. Not much else on the schedule for today.
HI to all who return here today!!!

Karen, I guess you'll be having sandwiches and deli salads for a few days, just makes things easier, sometimes you need that. I heard about all the power losses and downed trees in the upper midwest. The mother of someone from the Facebook booklovers group who lives in MI had a tree fall by her house, and lost power because of a tornado that hit just a few blocks away. She doesn't live all that close to her DM, but another family member did and helped with cutting up the downed tree, but sometimes older people get very stubborn, so her mother would not leave the house.
Good that you were able to go out walking. I am sure that walking stick works wonders for that. As for your nephew, I know they were recording hotter temperatures in the city, and at the airport that is much further out on Long Island than we are, but from what my phone was saying it went to a high of 95. I went to Target to return something yesterday, it was mobbed, people getting out of their houses and staying in the AC. There were pockets of power loss in different burroughs of NYC, but what they are saying is that there were spots that Con Ed turned off on purpose. Not sure what to believe with that one. They said that Lion King exceeded expectations for the opening weekend as a movie. Well of course, people went in to cool off. When you don't want to do things outdoors, you go to the movies.

Beautiful, sunny morning for my walk. 64Âş Loving this cooler weather. Only a high of 78Âş predicted for today with low humidity. I made Mexican Lasagna yesterday. It was sooo good. DH liked it too. I don't know why I waited so long to finally make it. I get a recipe that sounds good then it takes me forever to actually make it that is even if I ever actually do get around to making it.
Karen, glad to hear you're able to walk again! I know you've waited for a long time to do it. Too bad about all the storm damage around you. Such crazy weather anymore.
Hi to everyone following! No more time to chat. Gotta get ready for work.

What a change in weather. The weekend was oppressive with a temp of 96 and humid and today we’ll have a high of 78 and rain. We spent the weekend up at the lake with my DBIL & DSIL. Had a nice time time despite the fact there seemed like no air to even breath!
Karen, I’m so glad to see you’re getting back to walking. There’s something to having a walking stick that makes it easier. Maybe just having something in our hand gives us “more to do”! It’s too bad your elderly friends didn’t come over anyway just to help eat the food! Good of you to think of them. Quite a time at WM I see! It seems DH is doing better! Hope he has a good drs. visit today.
Robin, vertigo must be a terrible thing to experience. Are there any warning signs before the dizziness comes on? Wouldn't it be interesting to know how much higher sales are in a store when it’s weather related?! Luckily for us we had no power outages.
Gareth, I may have missed it - was the Mexican lasagna a WW recipe?
Just started “Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk” by Kathleen Rooney. It’s about a woman living and working in the 1930’s NYC. It may be on the line of Eleanor Oliphant/Ove type of book. Not too far into it yet.
Hello to all who follow!

Anngie, it must have been so much better being up by the lake, the scenery there is probably beautiful. An old friend of ours had an aunt with a house on a lake in the Adirondacks that we went to a few times, and it was heavenly. Glad you enjoyed, always good to be with siblings.
Gareth, glad you are cooling off too. My DH does not like Mexican, so probably not something he would eat. Sometimes I make fajitas or tacos, but it is definitely not a favorite of his. No regular lasagna, or any variation of that, would be fine with him.
I think that using the walking stick, like a cane, takes pressure off your legs and knees.
When it comes to vertigo, I really do not have any warning. I did not have any instances of it yesterday, so that was good. It was off and on Saturday. I knew I would get it when I laid down, then got up, which did happen. Karen, I think you mentioned the crystals. What happens is that there are some kind of crystals in your inner ear that get dislodged, and that is one of the common causes of unexplained vertigo. They eventually settle back into place.

Wow what a weather weekend! We are fine but I know some people who had some damage and there are still some without power. We went for breakfast on Saturday and stopped for gas on the way home. The gas station we stopped at has the radio playing over loudspeakers so when you are at the pump you can hear it and they were announcing tornado warnings when we were filling the car so we headed home and stayed there for the rest of the afternoon. Thankfully dd had not planned an early drive home from Minneapolis anyway and they decided that however long it took for the storms to pass they would wait and leave then. I had suggested they just stay an extra night but her friend had to be at work at 5:30 Sunday morning. DD also had to work but not until 10:30 and if she had called to say she was stuck in Minneapolis they would have been ok but her friend’s employer would not have been so understanding.
We saw The Lion King. I thought it was good not great.
Karen – I bought more coconut milk but the right one this time and I’m going to make the lentil curry again this week. I checked and the one at Pic n Save has just coconut and water in it. The one I used the other day had other ingredients and I think it was not the right thing. I think you need to pull out your high school yearbook and look up that woman who recognized you!
Anngie - did the lake house have a/c?
Robin – my vertigo is acting up too. I had not thought about the weather and air pressure perhaps having something to do with it. I’ve gotten to the point where I can almost anticipate it and if I hold my head very steady as it is coming on I can sometimes avert it. Karen the kind I have suffered with is when the crystals dislodge.
Gareth – what is that Mexican lasagna recipe? I make something I call Mexican lasagna but basically I just layer tortillas, refried beans, and cheese and serve it with salsa and if I have it guacamole or avocado.
We are supposed to have lunch with ds this week and we will "celebrate" his birthday. He is having a brunch this weekend and dh has volunteered at the tall ships festival and dd has to work so I told ds we can't go. (I guess he is angry about that but hasn't bothered to say anything to me....). I thought it wasn't a big deal because our family has a history of recognizing birthdays whenever we can get everyone free, and dd and I are used to that because our birthdays are 3 days apart and in December so it has always been tough to schedule 2 outings. Anyway I'm thinking I may try to go to his party on my own. Anyone who knows me knows what a big deal this is because I am a very anxious driver and he is over an hour away. I will try to think of it as just a series of short trips all strung together and be brave...

Marsha, I definitely would go to the brunch for your DS. Maybe do as you are thinking, but find places to stop along the way, maybe 20 minutes, then stop for coffee. Another 20 minutes, stop for a bathroom break, or to shop for non-perishables. I am a driver, so I don't mind, but know that there are many people who don't like longer drives. Is it highway or local driving? Maybe you would prefer one over the other.
In our family we pick a day that works for everyone too, and it is usually not on the actual birthday. If that works out, like it did last week with DH, that's great. Although we were also celebrating both my DS's birthdays that day too.

Robin - this would be a drive through the country on country roads. As it turns out it is the same time or shorter to drive through the farmlands as to get on the highway. So nowhere really to stop. I have to mentally tell myself it is just shorter drives all strung together. I am not a highway driver, and I think EAA (the Experimental Aircraft Association convention which is a HUGE even attracting people from all over the world) ends this weekend and the highway I would take, were I to take the highway, runs right past the EAA grounds so there is no way I'm getting on that road!

I had to go back and read all the posts. I feel like I've been gone for a week.
After the discussion last week about not being able to sleep and what to do, I had 2 nights of insomnia. Friday evening I started getting a headache so I took my meds, but they didn't make the headache stop, so I took a pain med. I kept waking up during the night so I took another pain pill. When it was time to get up to get ready to go to DD's house, I could have happily gone back to sleep. Of course, I didn't. The good thing was that my headache was gone. We had a good time with DGS. He is talking more and is so busy. He has some blocks, Duplos or maybe a little bigger, that he just loves. He plays with them a lot. When he took his nap, I fell asleep watching TV. I didn't sleep for very long. We ate dinner with DD and DSIL and got home about 9 pm. I felt tired, but again, I had a hard time getting to sleep. After church and lunch on Sunday, I went took a nap. Last night it all caught up to me. I didn't have any trouble getting to sleep and I slept really late this morning. I may have had too much caffeine Saturday which kept me from getting to sleep. It was just odd for me since I take a pill at night that usually puts me right to sleep.
Karen, what excitement you had! Good Wal-Mart took care of you.
People change a lot don't they? DH is facebook friends with a guy from college. I never would have recognized him. This is rude, but he had gained so much weight and his face was so much fuller.
It is supposed to be cooler through Thursday with lows in the 60s which is almost unheard of in July in Texas.
Robin, sorry about the vertigo.
Anngie, I have heard of Lillian Boxfish. You'll have to tell us how you like it.
I do not like highway driving either. I have routes through town to avoid highways.

Marsha, I would bet there is somewhere you can stop, I think an hour of driving, even on country roads, without a stop around, would be unusual. Hope for the best, or maybe that rain is predicted so DD won't work and will go with you.
Carol, so sorry about the headache and lack of sleeping. Sometimes headache pills also have caffeine in them. I know when I think I can get away with a 3rd cup of coffee I have a hard time falling asleep, and if I drink coffee after 12:00, forget it. Even with whatever I take.
I know it is not as hot here today, only 85, but so humid now that it feels much hotter. It is supposed to start raining soon, so maybe that will help. The humidity started to make my head hurt when I went out with the dog. Started to feel like I was getting dizzy, but am OK.
