I have read in a few of the posts about people suffering with knee pain. I did for years! Had shots, etc. Two years ago this month I decided I had had enough and had a total knee replacement. I would have done it sooner but was always discouraged by doctors...it was not bad enough. I heard about a doctor who does the surgery a little differently and when he looked at my xrays he said "you have bone on bone" that doesn't get better.
What a difference it has made it my life!!! I was 77 when I had it done. I never look back and now the scar has completely faded - not that I will be wearing minis any time soon!
I write this as an encouragement for anyone who is thinking of it. Marie

Marie, glad you had success! My DH had a total knee replacement last July and everything went as perfect as it could have. His surgery was outpatient. They sent a nurse to check on him at home the evening after his surgery and the next morning and PT came to the house three times. After that he was seen at the office for follow up. His surgeon was amazing as well as the rest of the medical team. Drs had been telling him for 10 years or more that he needed to have it done. His was bone on bone, too. He is very pleased with his new knee.

Marie I'm so glad you found someone who would do the surgery.I have gone to 2 different doctors and they keep giving the shots which help a little but never enough anymore. The one I went to 2 yrs ago said if I asked 10 different people about knee replacement and I would get 10 different answers. However it's beginning to interfere with my quality of life. When I am able to find a new doctor that's actually good I will ask about knee replacement once I get on my new insurance.
Thanks for sharing.

I have family members on my husband's side that should definitely have knee replacements but...they don't. I am not sure of the longevity of the replacement but...enjoy while you can and get a new one (like a new tire?) if/when you need one!

My mother lived to be 100 totally sound of mind. For the last 25 years of her life she suffered with knee pain. She had been told the same as me - didn't really need it! I think this was one of the things that spurred me on. Marie

However it's beginning to interfere with my quality of life. When I am able to find a new doctor that's actually good I will ask about knee replacement once I get on my new insurance. I hope you're able to find a doctor you like soon. Once the knee pain affects your quality of life, it's time for replacement. My doctor seems to be on the same page as me so I don't expect him to give me any hassle once the injections quit working. The injections work well for me but who knows how long that will last.

MarieL, it was nice to hear from you and I'm so happy you decided to do it. Look how much better the past 2 years have been for you. borntexan, I hope you will look for a doctor to do this for you soon. I think you've done all you can and knee replacement may be the answer now. The one thing I read was to do as much physical therapy as you can before the surgery to prepare. Good luck!

Thanks linda72. It will still be awhile as I'm transitioning to the state retirements insurance in September. It will be the same insurance company but I don't know if I can do anything through Medicare this year since I have already had injections 2 months ago.

Thanks linda72 . It will still be awhile as I'm transitioning to the state retirements insurance in September. It will be the same insurance company but I don't know if I can do anything through Medicare this year since I have already had injections 2 months ago. Medicare has so many rules that they may be the reason your doctor’s haven’t recommended surgery. There may be “step therapy” required which could include injections but also other things. And the amount Medicare approves and will pay for the surgery may be a disincentive to the doctors to do surgery; they tend to get pennies on the dollar for services…a really unreasonable reimbursement rate.
