Day 32 Prepare for Travel
Before leaving on a trip Beck suggests you make a travel plan. You are to decide how closely you’ll follow your diet plan, what exceptions you will make to your diet plan, and how much weight if any you’ll allow yourself to gain. She says there are no right or wrong answers, these are individual choices.
She suggests three different strategies you might try:
Allow yourself a set amount of extra food/drink every day.
Follow your usual plan and have a few minor splurges.
Follow your diet every day except have a splurge on the last day.
To figure out your strategy think about what food/drink you would like to add to your vacation experience. Plan for what would make the vacation/trip special. Part of the strategy could also be to have plans for exercise and general activity.
Beck wants you to make note of you plan before you go and to read your plan every day before your trip and every day while on your trip.
These are more of her suggestions: exercise more, eat brunch instead of breakfast and lunch, carry food with you, use what you’ve learned from Beck such as monitoring hunger and satisfaction, eating slowly and mindfully.
While traveling home prepare yourself for your weigh-in and understand no matter the scale number get back on plan right away.
Me here: What I use to advise on the old message boards was before you leave plan out your eating for the week of your return. Have as much of the food in the house as you can. One poster suggested making food ahead of time and freezing it so there would be less work when you get back. Also, get to the grocery store as soon as you can to get your fresh food.
Something to remember: if you have a lot of treats and relax while away from home be prepared for the adjustment back to your everyday diet.
What tips do you have for staying on plan while traveling?

As I wrote in the post I think the big thing is to be ready to get back on plan when you get home. I don't travel much but the ones where I plan ahead and don't go overboard when I'm traveling work out. One time I spent the extra money to have a refrigerator and microwave in my room. Was able to have most of my meals in the room. There was a Subway close by and I would get a foot long and have half for lunch and half for dinner. (I favor Subways when traveling because they are kind to my stomach.) The times I've stayed with people I was able to keep most of my eating routine in place.

This is always a challenge for me when it's work travel because I'm in countries where I really have to make due with what's available and that is usually either cheese and crackers and fruit in my room, OR trying to limit damage with veg pizzas and veg pastas and whatever else veg I can find in the hotel or nearby. Interestingly, last summer we went to England for 2 weeks and we walked and ran around so much I came back weighing the same as when I left, but it was really hot and we didn't eat as much as when we're home so it all worked out, much to my surprise.
Tomorrow I'm supposed to do a day trip - out and back by dinner time - so I will take a big jug of home made lemonade, waters, and OP snacks. And I'll have a turkey sandwich for lunch or something like that.

surfgirl, I don't know if you have seen it or not BUT there is an app you can get to have on your phone HAPPYCOW that is free and lists where to find vegan and vegetarian restaurant/food/etc near wherever you are in the world. People can add in locations while out and about, too.

I haven't really TRAVELED for 6 years. I have traveled and lost weight, maintained and gained weight. One time I gained ten pounds in a month and couldn't wear my travel outfit home again.
I think the trick is to figure out your plan in advance: lose, maintain, gain 2 pounds, whatever Next the planning... * I liked the idea of thinking about what to set aside to splurge on. I know that I will want three pieces of See's candy and I eat as many enchiladas as I can while in the states. I should probably put a limit on that to say once a week?
* The main thing is to remain focused and stick with the plan made.
I will have to decide about this if/when I travel again.
Also...the time I maintained it was the summer I reached goal weight and I just kept eating as I had been to lose...best vacation ever and I journaled the entire time, too.

cathygeha, I always think of you as being on a permanent trip because of where you live.! When I travel I up my exercise, and eat as healthy as I can while still having a dessert and a glass of wine a day.

cathygeha , I have that app, thanks though! It only works in areas that are more mainstream and urban. And it doesn't really work in most of the places I go for work. Alas.

cathygeha , I gained 10 pounds in a month once. I live in Connecticut and I was out in California taking care of my father. He was in a nursing home and I was staying in a motel and ate every meal out. I have depression and wasn't well medicated at the time and was under a lot of stress. I made the conscious decision to eat to keep my moods even. I really did overeat. There were what I considered good restaurants in the area and I took advantage of them. Funny thing was I didn't keep snacks in my motel room just ate three big meals. He died six weeks later. Went to put on the black skirt I took for the funeral/burial and it wouldn't close because I had gained the weight. Luckily I had a rubber band to put around the button and was able to close the skirt.

surfgirl, Bummer! What countries/places do you have most trouble in? I was thinking maybe read up on the local food before going to know what local dishes might be available?

cathygeha,I travel to a lot of countries in Africa and Asia and there isn't much option other than pizza, grilled cheese, etc. If I'm in a South Asian country there are veg options but think high ghee content Indian cookery...not exactly OP!

bbbearsmom, hah! I gained 11 pounds in 10 days once on vacation in Jamaica. Or was it Barbados? It was many years ago. Anyway, we were on the American Plan with breakfast and dinner included. We thought we would skip lunch - wrongie-dongie. Also I had dropped a lot of weight prior to the vacay and it was dying to jump back onto my bod. We went hog wild with the "free" food.

lani, I think it is the "free" food that gets to people on cruises too.

She had leukemia and could have died at any time. I set up the room for her. She brought clothes to wear to see the ambassador and spend lunches on Wednesday with my friends (we did not meet while she was here for five months). I listened at her door as she slept till into the afternoons to make sure she was breathing then...flew home with her in November. I ate and drank and gained no doubt over 20...maybe 30 pounds while she was here for five months. It happens.

I think...not sure...that on HappyCow you can ask for help? Not sure...would need to look for sure. Perhaps sending a shout-out requesting information about the places you are going beforehand would give you some feedback? Just a thought. If what you are doing is working then no worries.
