Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today. Weather is hot and humid here. They had predicted thunderstorms but it looked like we missed them. I actually would love to travel and go somewhere but I hate dealing with the hotels, planes, etc. It was just easier when I was younger Ginny - My relative is moving to South West Florida. Ruth - Here's a link to the website where I saw the hats with crocheted flowers: jaynesquiltingroom.blogspot.com/2019/08/quilt-show-vendors.html - scroll down for pictures I found out my dental appointment is postponed because the dentist didn't like the bridge that the lab sent back, so he's working with them to get a better one. I like that he's so professional and thorough, but I was hoping to get it done soon and hopefully be relieved of the pain. Guess I have to stick it out longer. I had a surprise call yesterday from one of my siblings and they are in town for a few days we will get together for a meal - maybe more than one time. This is the one that moved earlier this year so it will be good to see them. Take care everyone!

I have my sunglasses now. Same frames, new lenses. I have an appointment Monday to see the optometrist to get the prescription for the computer glasses. My bifocals have lines which are fine, but with all my vision issues, dizziness and balance issues I want to simplify computer glasses, not trifocals. I have frames I can use.
I was only gone for two hours, and I picked up glasses, wants to two banks, did grocery shopping, and went to Staples. Okay ... one of the banks has a mini branch in the grocery store so that was a shortcut!
Tomorrow I have to go to the post office, the main branch of the bank, drop off things for Goodwill, drop off cardboard boxes, and hopefully have the car washed. Every time I drive somewhere, I start sneezing.
hb will not starve or become dehydrated! He does need new tennis shoes which he buys at Costco. Part of the sole is beginning to come loose. It's not where it's dangerous. The other day I overheard him telling his dog that I take really good care of them. I recognize that much of his predictions of doom, gloom, and starvation are a function of his diminished capacity due to dementia, so it's nice to know that on some level he gets that I merit some credit.
I could eat healthy meals that I would like for several months. He would have a problem! Diminished ability to taste and chew make food less palatable. I've probably mentioned before that I will need to start blenderizing things for him.
The last few days have been slightly cooler, but that's just temporary!

Hey CJ- first of all that is so nice that you have family in town visiting, guess its been awhile since you last saw your sibling? Hope its a wonderful time catching up and that you get to see each other more than once. I know travelling is such a hassle, and seriously is not my favorite thing to do. (Wait till you hear me bellyaching when we go away in a few months). Funny, some people thrive on travel, and others- well just cannot be bothered. I know my DBIL and DSIL (who live in west central Florida, once took the auto train from here to Florida. Nice thing about it is you do not have to rent a car. I figure it must go near where you live, the train follows the I95 corridor. Just an idea.....I have heard that you will not save any money, but there is convenience of not having to rent an automobile. I checked out that web site with the crochetted hats (with flowers ) and just below she sells star quilt blocks. Wow. My BOM is all star blocks, some similar to the ones sold by this quilter. Gee, I could have saved myself all this work and just bought blocks from her! ha ha ha . It was fun to see. Glad that your dentist noticed that the bridge was not right. In the long run, it is better for you to get it right. Sue, I never figured that you could not eat healthily or that you were really running out of food or milt! One of the hallmarks of anyone with dementia of any kind is complaining; they are losing their autonomy and must rely on others for help, BUT the one thing they can do is complain. And the ability to tasted does change with age. We had a dog of a time with my mom during her later years. Glad that your dog is. Such a good listener- and I am sure the dog agrees that you are taking great care of everyone both human and canine. Hope all your errands go smoothly. Just watched a video (for a second time) on how to use the blind hem attachment for my machine. Its been years since I used it- want to hem those curtains. Friends are coming over for dinner tonight. Guess I better go do some straightening up and get those curtains done. Have a great day Ginny

CJ, thanks for posting the link to the hats. They're so nice. I wonder if she hot glues the flowers on. Sometimes hot glue doesn't last especially on fabric that looks like what that hat is made of. Maybe I need to look into that. Also on the picture of the hat only you can see a display of what looks like delicate bracelets or maybe their headbands for babies...it's hard to tell and when I clicked the link on there that the author of that page mentioned it took me only to quilt patterns. I would love to see her other crochet things. I see what Ginny means about the star blocks. She did a beautiful job but I know Ginny did too.
And it's great to hear that your dentist is diligent and noticed the bridge wasn't quite right.
Sue, you do have a lot of your hands. You must be the world's most patient person.Taking care of someone that is suffering from dementia is trying to say the least and there's also the grieving for the person affected being not really the same person they once were.It has to be one of the saddest things.
Ginny, I have never tried the blind hem stitch. I've often wanted to but I've always been pretty sure it wouldn't turn out right. And you know how I am about company for meals. I'd be in a panic. It's good that you are creative and will undoubtedly produce a great meal.
I'm nearly done with the 4th hat I'm making from the same pattern and I'm really tired of doing it. I followed the pattern exactly and it came out way too small. I increased and it came out a little larger but not the size it should have been. So I increased a little more and now it looks too big and too wide. It's pretty but I think I'll just delete this pattern from my list. There are many that are very similar. But the good thing is that I have the three hats for dgd and her dd's done and the other done for another dgd. (I'll put on a ribbing brim so that it pulls it in to actually fit) Now I think I need to do some finishing work on some things that need weaving in of ends or a little sewing, such as the Viking hats. Those are done except for sewing the parts together.

Good morning!
Ruth, well congrats on finishing all the hats. I have had patterns like that- where no matter what you did the darn thing did not turn out the right size. Bet you are so very very happy you are DONE with it. And I too would delete it from my list. Blind hem stitch, once you go through the minor headache to set up for it makes very short work of a hem. The curtains I hemmed were cheap (from Walmart) and the fabric was not the best for using that technique as it tended to snag a little bit. The fabric was heavy enough it probably would have turned out better if I used a smaller needle. But its done and the curtains are hung
Guess my crafting for today is packing up for my free motion quilting class tomorrow. (Did that this am)
Hope everyone has a great day. Ginny

Good morning to everyone. I hope you all had a good night's sleep and feel good today.
Ginny, yes your crafting not only involved the curtains yesterday but now you've crafted by packing up the things you need for your class.
I never did get to the finishing work. Instead I started yet another hat. This one is one I saw that might be a good one for me to use to make dh another hat. He likes knitted better than crochet and I thought this stitch looked more like that. It's just a practice one just to see how the stitch looks. So far I'm not impressed. It's called a spider stitch and is sc,ch1, sc in the same stitch, skip one, repeat around. Then next row you do the stitch in that ch1 between sc's. Well maybe I'd be able to see it better in a lighter color but I'm using a pretty dark brown and it's a real challenge to find that ch1.This one was intended to go into the donate box anyway so some man will like it. Today I have several things I need to get done do have to get off my couch and get those things accomplished.THEN I can maybe get to some of the crafting things I need to finish up.
I just stopped and ripped out the three rows of that stitch that I had done. I'll use a different stitch to test. Probably the "knit" stitch. Lesson learned...don't use dark color yarn at night.Even this morning I couldn't really see that chain1 space
Have a great day everyone

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today It's hot here again and we're supposed to have a lot of days in the 90s over the next week. It feels like summer has gone by fairly quickly, so I'm not going to complain I went out yesterday to run some errands and pick up groceries, so today I get to stay home. I'll be having lunch out with family later this week, so that will be nice. Yesterday I picked some fresh figs off the bush in my yard. It used to be a huge tree, probably 15 feet or more high and probably 10 feet across. After my father passed away weeds starting growing up in it and I tried cutting them out but they were too much for me and they took over the tree and killed parts of it. So I had it cut down. Well, the next year after that it started growing back! I guess the roots weren't dead. It's gotten larger over the last few years and it's probably about 7-8 feet high again and probably 6 feet wide. I would get figs on it but they never ripened up. This year I finally have more ripe figs and was able to pick about 30 yesterday. I'm enjoying eating them fresh. Back in the heyday of the tree I used to make a bunch of fig preserves and my father would sell the figs to a local farm market. He had a real green thumb and could produce such wonderful vegetables and fruits and make the yard look so nice. Sadly I don't have that skill Take care everyone

CJ, I've never had a fresh fig. I've had the fig tree house plants but they never got figs on them. I don't even know if they're supposed to but what a great thing to happen that the tree grew back and now has ripened fruit for you to eat! Can you freeze them? My father also had a green thumb. He and my mother owned a house in a small suburb that had pretty small lots so the backyard was not large but he would rototill it all up and plant veggies. His tomato plants grew as tall as he was. He also grew other things like kohlrabi and salsify which I don't remember ever eating but later found that I love kohlrabi. I still have never tasted salsify. I don't remember what else he grew but I know he kept most of the neighborhood supplied with tomatoes and I would stop there on my way to work and make a big salad to take for lunch.
It's to be hot all the rest of this week and next week too my dh says. I need to start cleaning my house for my ds' visit. He will be arriving on Sept14th.I need to get my craft cave cleared out a little more to make room for a bed too. This time it's only him coming. He's not bringing any of the children this time. I have to wonder why because he got a huge deal on plane ticket. I hope he doesn't have any bad news to tell us.We have to worry about our children...mostly unnecessarily but we do it none the less.

This morning was quilting group which is always an excellent outing. Good conversation and lots of laughs!
The robins are having a frenzied banquet in the backyard today. The Canada red cherries are ripe (think chokecherries). Canada red cherry trees are a sport that developed in the wild. The leaves are green in the spring and are a burgundy red by July. They add a good accent color to aspen trees! There must have been 100 robins this morning!
The wheat field have just started turning gold, so summer is drawing to a close! School doesn't start until September 3, a week early in some of the smaller surrounding towns. There is a very large field of corn growing near the university. When I drive past, I want to burst into song! June is busting out all over, ... it's interesting how local agricultural needs influence school starting dates. We're late/short season. Corn is not a usual crop.
One of my dd's will be here in about ten days, albeit very briefly. Any visit is more than welcome!

good evening!
CJ, that fig tree sounds quite amazing- and its also amazing that it just seems to love where you are, irregardless of how it is cared for. Enjoy the figs, and I hope that it brings some wonderful fond memories of your dear father. Enjoy seeing your family later on this week also!
Ruth, Ds has been planning this trip for while...remember he wanted to come when your sister was visiting (or right around that time). Easier said than done...but I think he just wants to see you and Dh. BTW my mom loved kohlrabi and used to grow it in her garden.
Sue, those choke cherry trees sound pretty funny- funny as I am sure you get all kinds of birds hanging out to eat the fruit. We used to have a mulberry tree, same thing. When the fruit was ripe, the tree was covered with birds. Glad your dd will be visiting with you shortly!!! Guess you had a good day- nice time at sewing....
Busy day for me. worked on my presentation for next week (I am teaching on Tuesday) and then babysat in the evening. Got quilting class tomorrow (free motion class) and then on to my hair cut. Long day, but hopefully a good one. Night all! GInny

Sue I'm glad you enjoyed being out of the house for while at quilting. We have several bushes that have berries. I don't know what they are but the birds really don't flock there to eat them. Some eat them now and then but no large flocks at all.
Ginny, yes I wondered back then why he didn't come while my sister was here. I got the feeling even then that he wanted to be alone with us and I wondered then too if it was because of something he wanted to discuss with us in private but I'm most likely just reading things into it that are actually not there. Enjoy your class tomorrow!

I just did a tiny bit of reorganizing and I'm exhausted already.I'd sure love to get rid of a bunch of this stuff. I packed up another large trash bag with clothes to donate. Now I just have to take all 7 or 8 bags out to my car so they'll be ready for me to take them.Sad for me but good for them that most of what I packed yesterday all still have tags on them.
Now I'm ready to sit and crochet and I want to make myself finish some things so that I can cross them off my list. It feels so good to see the list growing smaller...well except that I keep adding to it.

I can't believe all I've accomplished today. For most people it wouldn't be unusual but for me it is. I got all those bags outside and into my car trunk. Lots of exercise there. Then I did a bunch of other things. No crafting yet though except on breaks I read on the crochet groups. Now hopefully the rest of the day will be nothing but resting, crochet, and some tv maybe

Good evening!
Ruth, well it sure sounds like you had a productive day! Nice work getting all those clothes packed up and ready to donate. As you do not get out to shop all that much, you must really be making quite a dent in the stuff around your house. I know you straightened a lot and cleaned up a lot before Phyllis came to visit, and now are doing even more with your son coming. Bet it feels good....and the clothes will be used by someone in need. A win win.
Quilting class was good enough and I guess I am glad I went. My machine went a bit wonky, but I got some good tips. Honestly, I will be happy when I am more on my own and not stuck driving 45 minutes for every class. But all in all a good day, and I have gained some knowledge for free motion quilting.

Ginny I"m glad that you enjoyed the class to some extent and got some good hints. Once when I went to that series of quilting classes my machine wasn't working and the owner of the shop insisted I use one of theirs and it was a really great one. Expensive too. They were probably hoping I'd want to buy it. Well I wouldn't have minded having a nice one like that but that expensive a machine is not for me.
