Strawberries: These are usually seen more in spring than in summer. I like them in strawberry shortcake. We have them a few times then that is that.
Tomatoes: I usually have some daily. On mornings I have an egg I have them cooked and a bite of tomato, egg and toast all together.
Upside down Cakes: Don't make them often BUT was thinking perhaps putting fruit in a jello mold might be a similar idea. Was also wondering if a lightened trifle might be healthier and as tasty.
Water Fun: Swimming pool almost daily. Summer camp with water skiing, tubes on the Colorado river. Slip-n-slide but often ended up with grass burn from sliding off the plastic.
FLOWERS in food: In Lebanon they use orange blossoms and preserve them in sugar - they turn red - and put them on top of the sweets.
PERSONALS:
RENE: Melon and feta sounds yummy...maybe side by side if not in a salad.
CHERRY: I think my sister makes a watermelon salad with feta, mint and balsamic vinegar...I wonder how Rene makes her? I loved reading about box lunch socials...looked them up...seems they were popular in the early 1900's (wikipedia) then fell out of favor in the 70-90's but are coming back in...a lot of the "old" is recycled Hope your son makes it soon for a visit!
BEVERLY: If you do get the recipe for watermelon salad from your DIL...do share it
JUDY: I looked up on YouTube how pin loom weaving is done then googled images. There are so many different things you can do with it! WOW! The Tajin seasoning sounds good...bet it would be good on eggs, too.
PAM: I think picnicking by buying food to take along would be a LOT easier...or buying on site

Good morning! Cherry- in that salad I use either rucola or those weedy kinds of greens. Evoo and I have been usingh a pomegranate vinegar which is delicious.
I use lots of tomatoes and strawberries naturally in season. I have 2 basil plants on the terrace so mostly eat tomatoes fresh or lightly tossed in a pan.

Lately I have been following Aberdeen's Kitchen on Facebook and Instagram. I am really trying hard to leave my diet mentality behind and working towards a Mediterranean type of eating style. This looked delish www.aberdeenskitchen.com/2019/08/watermelon-panzanella-salad/

We have had an abundance of tomatoes this summer, they are delicious. They are beginning to go away, I will miss them. Also have enjoyed the strawberries this summer.
I have made many upside down cakes, I know they are not healthy though, because they are full of sugar & butter. Maybe I could come up with a healthier way. Might try to come up with something.
I never had a lot of water fun as a child. My mom couldn't swim, she had a deathly fear of water. As a result, my sister, nor I either one, ever learned to swim. Only thing we were allowed to do was to play in the shallow creek.

Rene, thanks for more details on the salad. I'll have to do some experimenting.
Some of those strawberry and tomato recipes sound delicious. I often use strawberries with my oatmeal and just alone to eat as a fruit.
I use lots of my home grown tomatoes. I had one the other day that was only about half ripe, but some critter (gopher, probably) had taken a few bites out of it. I cut off the part he had chewed and ate the rest of the tomato. I was thinking that even a half ripe tomato from the garden tastes so much better than any tomato purchased at the store. I wish I could grow tomatoes year round. I may try growing some small cherry tomatoes designed to plant in a container under lights in my basement this winter.
I don't make many upside down cakes for the same reason as Bev - too much sugar and butter. I do like them, though.
I taught myself to swim in a creek near where we lived. I'd wade out in water up to my neck and tried to swim towards shore. After I was comfortable and really learned how, I would swim anywhere. I never really learned the finer points of swimming, but i was comfortable in water of any depth. As I grew older I learned how to water ski too. That had a learning curve of its own.

QUESTIONS: 1. Comments on any of the above? I like strawberries but don't buy them often because the containers usually have either moldy ones or unripe berries. More likely to buy them frozen and sliced.
Am eating lots of cherry tomatoes from the garden right now. just picked my first "big" tomato of the season.
I watched a cooking show were the bakers had to make an upside down cake using any fruit except pineapple. Maybe you could lighten it up by having more fruit and less cake ? They certainly looked good !
2. FUN: What summer water fun did you have when young? Pool, slip-n-slide, sprinklers, pond, lake, river, rafting, canoeing, other... Anyone a lifeguard?
Didn't really go anywhere near water much unless we were camping near a lake in the mountains and then the water was probably too cold to do much more than wade in.

Strawberries - like Jan, I like them, but don't tend to buy fresh because of the (lack of) quality. Frozen is the way to go.
Tomatoes - we have lots in the garden now! Enjoying them like the hint said - sliced with salt (and I add pepper too). I remember my mom putting sugar on sliced tomatoes. The hybrid varieties now are probably plenty sweet. I've mentioned before, favorite way to use them - chop tomatoes, chop fresh basil, mix with pasta, parm cheese, olive oil.
Cakes - not a fan of cake, I honestly don't do much baking at all. I know how, but we just don't need to have the baked goods sitting around!
Swimming - like Beverly's story, my mom didn't know how to swim, so I was always warned firmly to stay away from water. Apparently, in that day and age, swimming lessons started around age 5, because at that age, she took me to swimming lessons, and I was terrified of the water since I'd always been warned to stay away. She finally did quit trying to get me to go to the lessons...and that does mean I can't really swim. Perhaps a bad attempt at a dog paddle at best.

I don’t usually buy strawberries. I prefer blueberries😊
I don’t make upside down cakes or any cake usually.
I never learned to swim. We spent our family time in Estes Park. I remember watching the fireworks over the lake.
