Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Late start, as my computer decided to do an update when I wanted to use it, so of course I had to wait for it. Why does it seem like it takes so long, when you need to get on and get done?
Gareth, I too avoid big groups of people, as with the Bellin Run, which is in June here in town, that one is huge! But the one in Minocqua is maybe 500 people at the most, so that one does not bother me. Having people see into our apartment does not bother me during the day, and being on the 2nd floor, the only ones who can see in are the 2nd floor tenant's across our little parking area. But the minute it gets dark, those blinds are closed.
Carol, thanks, about the walk. It is clear it is all about the money, with the way they set the run up this year. I am mulling this all over, and thinking of how I want to file a complaint about it....even tho they will not care what I say, I still want to voice my displeasure. How did your hair apt go? I had mine last week, wanted to go a tad darker, and wow! It sure is darker!
Marsha, sorry you lost your walking buddy. I am just the opposite, I am a loner work out person. Never really got into the the classes at the Y, like to workout there at my own pace. And of course here at home, I never had a walking buddy; DH has walked with me over the years maybe a few times. Thank you, about my DH. We have no idea what to expect, that is why I am going with him, in case he does not feel well afterwards. According to what they told DH, it is supposed to be easier on the patient, than chemo.
Pinky, what a great opportunity to get some Grandma time in with Crue! Nice how that worked out. The bladder washing today is the 1st one. He has to have it once a week for 6 weeks. Hopefully we can schedule around our mini vacation the end of Sept.
Anngie, lol, you had a hair apt also! Carol went too, yesterday. I went last week. Mine came up to $65 too, before tip. So sorry to hear about your sciatica! I know that is painful, my DF had it years ago, and he could hardly walk. I hope the PT helps. I know when I had the scar tissue pain from the lung surgery, PT didn't help at all. I still get that pain, in fact last night in bed reading, I got that stupid pain again, and with my hemp balm on my bed side table, I put that on and it went away! I have gotten to be a true believer of CBD oil, cream, whatever. I am going to get over to the bigger store for B Alive, in town in a few days, to get the oils you can put in food. The store out here by us does not have all of that other stuff. Maybe you should consider the CBD oils.
Robin, yes, I agree, as soon as it is dark out, our blinds are closed. I am having a hard time focusing on CA Girls, it is a very light read. I have The Forgotten Window waiting for when I get done with the girls, that will help, with switching to a more heavier read. Good luck with the new place tomorrow, bet it turns out good.
Well, I was shocked yesterday!! We went to the grocery store that I worked at, and went into the liquor store first, to talk to the woman working (I saw that she was working, so I wanted to ask her how the manager was doing, and what was actually wrong with him). The joke was on me....he was working! He was back at work, looking just fine. I didn't outright ask what was wrong with him, and nobody offered to tell me....even tho the management had brought me into the whole drama in the first place. Come to find out, the fella they hired to do the weekends closings up and quit, so she was begging me to come back and work closings during the week and weekend!!!!!!! ARE YA NUTS??? I had been worried when the Assistant Store Manager had assured me my hours would be during the mid day, as I knew from experience that just would not happen. Sure enough, I would have been stuck with those crappy hours, one of the reasons I took the Floral position, to just have day hours. I am so extremely happy that I turned that job down!!! Some one upstairs was guiding me along with that decision!
We need to leave here soon, so I better get going....have a nice day everyone.

55º and breezy so a little chilly walking this morning. Who would think you'd need a windbreaker the end of August?! I'm glad I came back in right away and got it. I didn't even get out of the driveway when I knew I'd need something on my arms. I got called for jury duty Oct 1. I know it's my civil duty and all but I'm hoping I can get out of it because of my hearing. Even wearing hearing aids I can have trouble hearing if someone is soft spoken or mumbles and doesn't speak up.
Karen, hope all goes well with DH today. Bet you are glad you had second thoughts about that job. Had to lol about 500 people! Still waaaay too many for me!
Hi to ATF! Gotta get ready for work....

Short walk this morning. I slept in again and decided to go for the 15 minute version. I was stopped by someone I didn't recognize but turned out she was a member of our synagogue years ago, I didn't realize she lived in my neighborhood. Her husband passed maybe 2 years ago? DH and I went to the service and she stopped me because she wanted to say she appreciated that we came. Got a bit caught up in a short 5 minute chat. It was chilly out here too, I wore a sweatshirt and was still a little chilled.
Gareth - I got called for jury duty years ago. It was an insurance case and I was dismissed. I am sure it was because I had attended Univ of Chicago graduate school because they dismissed me and one other juror simultaneously and he had also gone to school there. It seemed to me that because it was insurance the defendant didn't want someone who could understand and analyze complex problems and Chicago MBA program is known for it's bent towards the analytical.
Not much going on at home now that dd is at school. I've been taking it easy sitting on the couch watching tv in the evening. I've decided we can probably get by until the weekend without groceries so that's what I'm doing, and this weekend I'll do the target and groceries as usual but also go do some returns for dd.

Karen---hope all goes well for your DH today. Good choice on not taking that job offer.
Gareth---yes it's crazy that we need a light jacket or long sleeves at the end of August. I am keeping my fingers crossed for warm fall months, if it stays like this for Sept. and Oct. I will be happy but it better not get any colder than this especially in Sept. Our crops need a longer growing season yet and need some heat as well.
Marsha--Maybe you just found your new walking buddy. I'm sure that while it is quiet and you miss your DD it is nice to have more time to yourself too.
On the jury duty topic---DS#1, our hired man and I all got letters the first of the year that our names were drawn that we may be drawn for jury duty for the year 2019. We have teased DH what is he going to do if we all get called at the same time. Our hired man was called a few months ago but the case was settled the day before he needed to appear. DS#1 received a letter 10 days before he and DH were flying to Alaska that he needed to appear for jury duty while he was in Alaska. He called them right away and they released him since he had a big trip planned---thank goodness! I was sure they wouldn't make him come but you never know and then the case is still on-going since the judge ordered the defendant to have more mental evaluations so DS would not have had to appear anyway. This is our county court and our counties population is probably much less than many of your city populations so not a lot of court cases are held but they surely do have plenty for a small area.
Hello to everyone!!

My cut and color is $65, too. Also, I tip. It is a small shop. I have gone to the same person for 30 years and followed her around town when she changed locations.
I have been on one jury and that was enough. It was a civil case, medical malpractice. We found the doctor was not responsible for the man's death. There was a RN on the jury, too, and she told us how things worked in the ER. For instance, the lawyer kept asking the doctor if he had taken the guy's blood pressure. The nurse told us the doctor wouldn't have been doing that especially since he was trying to save the guy's life. A nurse or someone else would have been checking the vitals. A friend of ours was just on a jury for child abuse. He said it was very hard to listen to all the testimony. Our county has only 100,000 people. It is hard sometimes to seat a jury because it seems like you know someone-one of the lawyers, the defendant, etc.
Karen, it seems you made the right choice on the job. Way to go!
Marsha, when does DD start classes? Is she getting settled?
Robin, only 4 more days!

Meant to comment - I paid $110 plus tip for dd and I both haircuts. My guy is expensive but he is good. I don't know whether he upcharged because we both requested something a bit jazzier. She has curly hair and he layered it with shorter bits in front so it curls higher up on her head. Looked great leaving the shop but I have no idea what it looks like now that she is managing it on her own (and probably just putting it in ponytails anyway). He layered mine a bit more and said there is "more movement" but to be honest it doesn't look any different to me, just a plain bob.
Carol - classes start the Wednesday after Labor Day (next week). She has "work week" for sorority this week and into the weekend. As I understand it, it is when they teach the girls what is permissible to do/say during rush, like they aren't allowed to say "see you later" to a someone because that implies an invitation back, they aren't allowed to touch any of the girls, they aren't allowed to mention religion, politics, and several other topics. Also they were told specific clothes to wear on different days during rush. Last night dd told me that the light blue dress we bought last May might not be "light enough" as now they are saying powder blue. She has to send them a picture and I told her to use the flash and wash out the picture so it appears lighter. Where is she going to shop at this point? As dd said, for those skinny girls who wear a size 3 they can shop on the internet without trying things on, for dd who is larger chested and bigger boned, she has to try everything on. Last year she bought a dress on the internet for initiation because she needed white and it was too small but she had to wear it because she didn't have anything else.

Yes, we are coming down to the wire here. Future DDIL's mom came out to pick up her wedding gown today. I have a few things to pick up at the cleaners, but can do that tomorrow when I am out for my mani-pedi. I will do more organizing of clothes tonight. It was raining earlier, but looks like it stopped now. Only 73 degrees, it looks like it might warm up a bit tomorrow, into the 80's, but very happily will be around 80 and no chance of rain on Saturday, so will be perfect for the outdoor ceremony, and also having the use of the outdoor patio for the cocktail hour. We were a little concerned that if it was either very hot, or raining, we would be very tight in the cocktail hour room.
Karen, I can only imagine your neighbors across the parking lot from you looking in when your lights are on, and it is dark outside.
Pinky, you may have fewer trials, but with such a small population, in order to have the right number of jurors, I would suppose they would have to call you fairly often. I have not had jury duty for years. We have call in jury duty here, but I did have to show up one day, but the case was settled before the trial actually started.
Marsha, I always say that, people really appreciate when you go to a funeral or shiva. I actually forgot to go to a funeral on Sunday, to many things on my mind, but am going to go out in about an hour to shiva. It's about 10 minutes away from here, and I have to make a deposit at the bank anyway, which is out near where my friend's mom lives, her father died.
Gareth, everyone feels that way about jury duty I think, you would rather get out of it if you could, no matter how important.
Carol, I guess even as big as Texas is, there are small counties. Ours has almost a million and a half people, and the other county that is considered Long Island has about the same, so we are close to 3 million total. When we talk about our local newspaper, I always find it funny that we are really bigger than most large cities, so it's not really so small a local paper.
As I am sure you would expect, a Cut and Color here is a lot more than $65. I go to have my hair cut on Mondays because they have a $50 special. Single process color is $70. So now you know why I do it myself. I did touch it up last night, but honestly I think there is some gray underneath that I didn't get, but I don't think it can be seen.

Karen, you were right - someone upstairs was guiding you - and so was all of us! LOL. And who knows, maybe some time down the road you just might go back to work!
Gareth, I realize, too, that jury duty is our civic duty but it just isn’t something I want to do. I was called two years ago and it was settled out court (it often is) so I’m good for seven years. It used to be ten years but apparently the pool of people to call is small in this county.
Marsha, sorry you lost your walking buddy! Maybe she’ll be back when the house sells.
Robin, I’ll bet you’re getting so excited - even though there’s still things to do. Imagine, both of your sons will be married! Where did the time go, right!
Hi to Pinky & Carol!
Just picked up another good book, I think. It’s titled The Boston Girl by Ania Diamant. Too many books, too little time.
Robin/Marsha, if you don’t mind me asking - what is a shiva? Obviously it’s in regard to someone’s passing, but how is it different from a funeral/service?

Anngie - my walking buddy is planning to move near her daughter which is closer to Karen than to me, so when she sells for sure I'll lose her. Maybe she will get back to walking with me once she has "spiffed up" the house and is waiting for a buyer.
Shiva is the mourning period which follows the funeral. In the Jewish faith, burial occurs as soon as possible after death, followed by a period of mourning in which the family is visited by friends who typically come to the house to sit with the family and be there to make a "minyan" (10 people) which is necessary for the nightly service. Shiva lasts up to 8 days, some less religious sit shorter periods and there are other rules which might mitigate the shiva period such as when important holidays come. At the end of shiva, the family "gets up" and goes about their normal business but continues to go to synagogue to say a memorial prayer for a period of time.
Robin - where is the wedding?

The wedding is in New Jersey. They wanted someplace that had a totally different look than where DS was married, and that is what they found. Although it's going to be a black tie wedding, the place has a more rustic look other than in the ballroom. The area where the ceremony will be is outdoors, but it is covered, so if there was rain they said it would all be fine, but much better this way.

Robin - will you be staying at a hotel near the venue or will you be able to stay at home?

We are staying at a hotel. Almost all of our friends from Long Island are staying overnight at the hotel. The ceremony has to be late, and it won't end until very late, so I can't understand who would want to drive back. The hotel room is $129, we are having buses going back and forth from the hotel, and serving breakfast on Sunday morning.
