Week 1 Day 1 Record the advantages of losing weight- Beck reminds us that this is an essential part of the program. Do this on an index card or somewhere you can refer to when sabotaging thoughts are tempting you to give into unplanned food. So, why do you want to lose weight or maintain your weight? Write it down. Motivate yourself to read it daily during our review.
When we remind ourselves why we want to lose weight, dieting is easier. Thoughts on why you think this works? Please share your "advantages" of losing weight.

I'm one of those that responds fairly well to positive reinforcement through affirmations. Recording the advantages of losing weight goes a step further. Its an exercise in that I'm actually committing my thoughts to paper. It gives my thoughts more power by putting them in a tangible concrete form that I can actually see - and read aloud if need be.
*I experience less physical pain in my spine when I maintain a healthy weight. *I can wear anything in my closet and get ready in minutes when I'm maintaining. *My blood work is great as long as I maintain my healthy weight. *I have more energy and self confidence when I'm at goal.

Ditto what Doordie shared. Writing it down is powerful for me, too. Advantages 1. Better health - numbers are all in the normal range 2. Clothes fit from season to season - shopping for them when needed is a pleasant experience 3. Exercise is part of each day 4. The scale is my best friend by giving me feedback about my choices 5. Feeling in control is a result of being self disciplined and staying focused 6. Benefits of drinking water * Helps digest food * Lowers Blood pressure * Reduces Constipation * Lessens Asthma * Eases Depression * Metabolizes fat * Supports healthy hair and nails * Carries more blood and oxygen to your face * Eases irritability * Regulates body temperature so you don't get too cold or too hot * Suppresses appetite * Prevents water retention * Reduces stress

My advantages list: 1. I’m proud I lost 80 pounds and have maintained the weight loss for over 9 years. I don’t want to spoil my track record. 2. Don’t have to listen to comments about my weight & health anymore or at least they are only positive ones. 3. Health/ pass yearly blood work. 4. Like how I look. 5. Mobility/able to walk more. 6. Easier aging. 7. Like how I eat better now. 8. Easier fitting places, doing things like bending over. 9. Some aches and pains have gone away. 10. Life still has problems but at least I don’t also have the problems from being obese.
Putting this down so I can see it makes me realize the problems I had when I was obese and reminds me I don't want to go back there.

All of the above. Here's my list: 1. my knees feel better, but my hip has started hurting 2. my blood sugar stays lower 3. my clothes look better on me and I can wear smaller sizes and knit smaller sweaters! 4. I look healthier 5. I have more energy 6. I feel less self-conscious 7. I feel more in control of myself 8. I don't hate the scale at the doctor's office any more

My list has changed a little since I made goal. I’ve also borrowed other people’s lists as they said it better than I could.
1. I want to stay healthy as I age and avoid obesity related diseases. This includes good blood work and good check-ups with doctors. 2. I want to look good in my clothes. I like being able to easily wear anything in my closet. 3. I want to stay physically active. I feel better when I can move and do more things. 4. I want to be in control of my food instead of the reverse.
5. Free etools and meetings
All of these could be expanded but just seeing this list reminds me every day why I continue to do it.

When I tried to follow along last year, I made an Advantages Response Card list that had 20 things on it. Now that I look at it I'm feeling like I should pare it down to essentials...I'll try to cull it a bit here:
- I will live longer & age better.
- I will be healthier overall.
- I will like how I look.
- I will feel in control of my eating.
- I will have more energy.
- I will have accomplished something important.
- I will feel confident about my appearance.
- I will feel happier when I step on the scale.
- I will be able to remain active and engage in activities I enjoy as I grow older.
- I will be able to wear clothes I like and that reflect who I am.
- I will feel more comfortable in a swimsuit.
- I will be able to treat myself occasionally without overdoing it.
- I will have more room in airplane seats.
- I will look good in photos, not the fat one.
- I will look better naked.
ETA: Colleen, I love your sub-list about drinking more water!

In the hospital with dad for some tests so I don't have my list but I thought about it a little.
I want to maintain because I don't want to go back to where I was at 190+ pounds. Yes I am a long way from 190 pounds, but I am reminded of Beck's words about "no choice": "it matters every time". We basically regain a pound at a time, a choice at a time. Yes there is a lot of not so bad in between where I am and where I was. But regaining is a slippery slope that I don't want to be on. I spent a lot of time in that 190 range. It is not a better place. It is not where I want to be.

These are all great lists.I also like to see mine written down b/c it reminds me to be mindful.
To go along with Colleen's mention of the scale being her friend, their is a sign on the scale at Curves that says the scale is your friend and for the first time after losing 200 lbs I can believe that.
Reasons for wanting to maintain: 1.Good health-I am now off diabetic and high blood pressure meds. 2.I'm not ashamed to look in the mirror. 3.I can't say I can go in my closet and pick out anything and it will fit because I am still replacing clothes that are now too big.I do like being able to buy the same size clothes at thrift shops that I can buy at higher end stores. This is the longest I have ever been this size. 4.I like eating healthy but still know I can eat something unplanned, track it and get right back on plan.
The other day I came across an email which had a picture of a meetup between a WW friend I had met online and myself.I told Kenneth,"I was fat."That is the first time I can remember thinking of myself as thin.So more than the advantage cards I will look at the picture anytime I ask why I did this and why I need to keep doing it.
