Joy follows the path of the least resistance.
As you guys probably already know, I have been complaining for weeks about the relentless heat wave that has plagued our area this summer. It has just gone on & on, to the point that it has really began to play with people's psyche!! I really needed Rene's tips for taking better care of ourselves. To keep on that theme, here are some ideas to relieve stress:
1. Clear your head. Just step outside & breathe fresh air for about 15 min or so.
2. Gazing out the window. Consider hanging a bird feeder near your window, where you can see it from inside the house.
3. Gentle yoga stretches. A few simple stretches can heighten your concentration.
4. Enjoy a cup of your favorite tea. A cup of tea can relax you, especially at night & help you to sleep more peacefully.
5. Jot down a to-do list. To ease your mind, write down a list of the things that you have to do tomorrow before you turn in for the night. This will help you rest better without thinking about tomorrow's plans while you are trying to rest.
6. Stop & smell the roses. Scientist say that smelling the sweet roses of fall, for as little as 5 min, can produce a calming, relaxing feeling.
Thoughts?

1. Clear your head. Just step outside & breathe fresh air for about 15 min or so. Might work if the air quality is good and it is not too hot or cold
2. Gazing out the window. Consider hanging a bird feeder near your window, where you can see it from inside the house. I like this idea BUT we have so much in the garden that adding more might be too much? In a yard without what hubby has...maybe. I loved hummingbird feeders in California but there aren't any here in Lebanon
3. Gentle yoga stretches. A few simple stretches can heighten your concentration. Maybe? Stretching in general can help as can getting up and moving a bit
4. Enjoy a cup of your favorite tea. A cup of tea can relax you, especially at night & help you to sleep more peacefully. It would need to be herbal tea or I would not sleep at al! Perhaps hot milk or cocoa?
5. Jot down a to-do list. To ease your mind, write down a list of the things that you have to do tomorrow before you turn in for the night. This will help you rest better without thinking about tomorrow's plans while you are trying to rest. It might help if I had a lot to accomplish the next day.
6. Stop & smell the roses. Scientist say that smelling the sweet roses of fall, for as little as 5 min, can produce a calming, relaxing feeling. Scent can make a difference. Roses or other flowers...I am sure.
Fun: What is your favorite flower to smell? I am not sure. I like the night blooming jasmine...at night I like jasmine and gardenia (sort of) I love the scent of citrus flowers when they are blooming Narcissus smell wonderful in spring

1. You for sure wouldn't want to step outside here, the heat & the poor air quality would send you in quickly. On top of the ungodly heat, it is the height of ragweed season.
2, We do have a bird feeder that I can see from my kitchen window. Wish I had one that could be seen from the house without my having to be standing at the kitchen sink & straining my neck to see it. I love watching the cardinals in the winter.
4. A cup of tea can be very relaxing.
6. Smell the roses. I think this means just to take time to enjoy whatever is around you.
Fun: I have a rose bush that is a cutting off my mother's pink rose. She started hers from a cutting from her mother's bush. It is an old rose & only blooms once a year. The smell of those roses, surpasses any other rose that I have ever smelled. It is beside my back porch & the smell filters into the house when the bush blooms in the spring.

I don't get stressed much any more, but all those ideas would work for any time you need a break from whatever you are doing.
I have chamomile tea, which is supposed to help you sleep. I should start having a cup in the evening. If it works, all the better as well as being pleasurable to drink.
Favorite flower to smell? I'm not sure either. As far as roses go, the wild rose that grows around here (our state flower) does smell wonderful. It has a light spicy note to the rose smell. I love the smell of lilacs in the spring too.

Bev, Do you happen to know the name of this particular type of rose? Each summer, I go to the San Diego County Fair (I live in San Diego, CA, for those of you who don't already know) and there's a very large garden exhibit. One of the parts I particularly enjoy is walking through the tables and tables and tables of plants from people's yards (I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the winners of the various colors of ribbons). I probably spend more time with the varieties of roses than any of the other flowers (although sometimes the dahlias catch my attention). For sure I smell more of the roses than anything else... My DM raised a few varieties of roses when I was up to about 10 years of age, and I still remember loving to roam the back yard in summer...

Beverly, hope the heat will let up soon! 1. Clear your head. Grateful to live in an area that rarely has air quality problems. On exceptionally cold or hot days 15 minutes might not be pleasant, but even less time (I think) is a good way to change my outlook.2. Gazing out the window. We do feed birds and enjoy watching them. Mainly this summer, we've had just sparrows and finches. Sometimes see doves, woodpeckers, cardinals, orioles.3. Gentle yoga stretches. My challenge to myself this round of 7 in 7 is to stretch. I can't claim they are yoga stretches, but I am trying to be aware of moving, stretching, etc since I'm not on my feet as part of my work day anymore.4. Enjoy a cup of your favorite tea. I should try again to learn to like tea. I agree with the concept of routine to help relieve stress.5. Jot down a to-do list. This is something that really works for me. If I write things down, I know I won't forget about them. It keeps me from thinking about them constantly. 6. Stop & smell the roses. I've enjoyed reading the stories of others about roses. An aunt and uncle had a beautiful back yard, lots of flowers, many of which were roses. Good memories. I seem to remember that Avon (maybe?) had a rose perfume that was very popular when I was in high school (my friends and I probably used way to much....). Favorite flower - Lilacs and peonies come to mind - I think because they are spring flowers and it's so wonderful to see and smell them after a long winter.

1. Clear your head. I love to go walking out on our bike/walking paths that meander around a river. Nothing like breathing in some fresh air.
2. Gazing out the window. Consider hanging a bird feeder near your window, where you can see it from inside the house. I don't have a bird feeder, but I do have a hanging water saucer for the birds on my patio. There is a large jasmine tree growing right there, that the birds hang out in and access the water dish from.
3. Gentle yoga stretches. I haven't ever really done yoga. I have done pilates.
4. Enjoy a cup of your favorite tea. Trader Joe's has a seasonal (fall) tea out right now that is so delicious. And it is herbal besides. A great evening tea. Holly, if you haven't tried this one and can get to a Trader Joe's, I think you would love it.
5. Jot down a to-do list. I am a big list maker. It is so nice to be able to cross something off !
6. Stop & smell the roses. I have lots of flowers, but I don't think many of them are very scented.
Fun: What is your favorite flower to smell? Probably lilacs or my jasmine tree.

I love watching the birds out our family room windows. Out the patio door I can watch the birds eating from the bird feeder. I can also see the squirrels this fall. It does relax me. A cup of hot tea also relaxes me.
My favorite flower to smell are roses.
