Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Chillier this morning than yesterday. Only 57 right now, going to get up to 70, no rain.
Anngie, nice to see you stop in. It seems that my DB does have a nice sized retirement account with a financial planner, plus a large amount in his credit union account. Until I find out how much he is getting from SS, we will have to watch how he spends his money. So he should be fine for now, and I think assisted living can be an option, when it eventually comes to that. I don't think we have anything to worry about him stashing money in strange places in his house, as he is/was a penny pincer while owning that house. Our leaves are starting to turn also. Maybe it is a combination of all the rain, and the chillier temps off and on. I am hoping to see lots of color, when we travel almost 3 hours north on Wed.
Robin, when I applied for SS disability, I did not need an appointment. I printed all the forms from their website, filled them all out, and mailed them in. I did call a couple times to see how things were going, but disability is so different than regular SS. DH applied on line for his SS and got it right away...well not exactly right away, there is a 1 month waiting period. But DH did not have to talk to anyone. So I have printed out all the forms for my DB, first I have the paperwork explaining how to file online, then the forms for filing the regular way, since he is not on the net at all, we will do what ever way he is more comfortable. Years ago he was talking about looking for a different job, but was put off by all the places that required the applicant to apply online. I tried to tell him that he could go to any of the libraries in town and use a computer for free. The librarians would be happy to teach him how to sign on, and even get an email address, which he would need too. He did not want anything to do with that, so I have a feeling he will be filling out the paperwork, and mailing it in. Which is fine.
I am sorry to say, since I have not be brought up with the Jewish holidays, they are confusing. The holiday's we honor are just the 1 day affair, except for Christmas, with Christmas Eve being as important to some people as the day. With your holiday's there are many days of worship. Your brisket sounds like something I would like to try. I need to copy your instructions.
Carol, nice to see you here on the weekend. We had that issue after my mom passed. Why do people do that? I would not think to put money in those strange places, the only place my money is, is in my wallet, accounts at the credit union, and for our change, we have a big plastic Packer bottle that we throw our change in. In years past, all that change would be cashed in for DH sportsman's license for all the different hunting he does. Those darned licenses really add up, cost wise. I think the will he is doing today is for his money. I had to get the SS# of all of our grand kids, and my 2 daughters. He chuckled when he said they would be left some money, "but nothing to make them rich". He really does not have any thing worth any of us wanting. He does have a nice car, but if he can not drive at all, we will sell it for him to have the money. The festival you went to is how we are sometimes, when we go, like this weekend, to Beef-a-rama, we just love going up there so much, but the festival itself is something that we do the craft fair part, to see if there is anything I want to buy, but since there is so much other things we want to do up there, we don't stay at the festival all day, like some people.
I truly was scared that I was getting a bug, after being down and out for most of the day yesterday, but this morning, I am back to normal, except it seems I am trying to get a cold. DH and I both have to pack yet, which we plan on doing tomorrow, before going to DGS football game. I will be doing the driving up to Minocqua, Wednesday, it should be an easy drive, with no rain predicted, and nice highways all the way up. If my knees give me fits, we will stop so I can walk it out. We are taking our laptops, as we like to have our coffee in our room every morning, just like we do at home, so I can get the thread up and running everyday.
Need to get going, my DB is just like me, very punctual. Have a nice day everyone.

Beautiful, sunny morning. It's cool only 51Âş when I headed out walking. Jeans and windbreaker weather. 70's later. Perfect weather for the first day of Fall. Here's hoping we have a really nice long Fall.
Karen, busy couple of days for you but then time for some well deserved time away. I know how much you've been looking forward to it.
My morning has gotten away from me. Gotta get a shower and ready for work.

A beautiful day here again---very fall like and fitting for the first day of fall. I just hope it will stay this way for a long time---it can get cooler as the weeks go on but just give us the sun and blue sky. I see our leaves our changing color as well and just a very few are falling off. Since harvest is not able to be on schedule the guys are working with cattle today and tomorrow. The vet is with them and they are checking the cows to make sure they going to have a calf come spring. It is a lot of work to go to each pasture and gather them all to run each one through the chute and check this. I do not believe they are sorting the calves off at this time and weaning them but I guess I never asked. It seems early to do that but I guess they would normally do that in about a month so not sure. Glad they have a nice day to do this.
Karen---you asked about frogmore stew. It is a sweet corn season yummy that our family enjoys this time of the year and we try to get together several times to enjoy. If you have heard of a low country boil it is similar to that. In a big kettle you mix water, a can of beer, old bay seasoning and sea salt----you start out by throwing in baby red potatoes, after 20 minutes or so you add sweet corn, after another 20-25 minutes you add cut up polska kielbassa sausage and another 10 minutes you add raw deveined ez peel shrimp. Cook another 5 minutes-----drain off all the liquid and dump the kettle unto cookie sheets. Serve up with a lot of melted butter. We all absolutely love it and the grandkids always are asking for it all winter long. Glad you are feeling better---be sure to take some airbornne or Vit. C to keep it away though.
Gareth---isn't this weather just the best? Have a good day.
I have The Guest Book in audio form that I am listening to and not sure about it yet as I am not that far into it. Have also started reading The Round House which I have an actual book to read and liking it.

Hello All.
We had a nice visit with ds and gf on Saturday. We ended up meeting them halfway for lunch and sat and visited for a while. Hopefully ds will have dinner with us for Rosh Hashana next week but gf won’t come. DS will be in town for work so it makes sense for him to stop and eat. I tried to convince him to come Monday then stay over since he is going to be in town Monday and Tuesday but he begged off with excuses of school work. (Like he can't do that here???) Other than that not a very exciting weekend. Groceries and laundry and watched the football game. Another instant pot experiment success. That about sums it up. Oh, and a sugar binge yesterday. Hopefully that is out of my system but it was a bad one -once the floodgates are open it is hard to close them. Went to the Y this morning - deep water conditioning - and I'm up a pound from the day I went back to the Y a few weeks ago.
Karen – the East DePere farmer’s market was not there on Thursday night so they must be done. Have you tried water aerobics? The area around the hospital is not bad. My former Rabbi and her husband live in one of the houses behind the hospital between the hospitals and Monroe and they love it there, their neighbors are nice and it is a well kept area. The whole astor park area is nice if like older homes. I believe some have been subdivided into rentals. Just saying. Good to hear your financial concerns over db are not as bad as you expected.
Re rain – I forgot to tell you guys I emptied our rain gauge last week after the big rain storms and it was completely full – over 5”.
Robin – 13 is a small group for you. We aren’t having company. I don’t particularly like having company for Rosh Hashanah. I have for the last few years because there were a few strays in town – a med student was here but she’s done now, and there was a girl who turned out to be my nephew’s sorority sister on a year assignment with her company. We’ve had our new Rabbi the past few years. But this year just dh and I. DS will come on Tuesday for dinner. So I’ll cook one meal and serve it twice. DH and I don’t care. Your brisket sounds amazing. My mother has given me a few things over the years that she no longer wears, mostly rings that just don’t fit (don’t fit me either!) but she is holding on to the things that she enjoys wearing. She tells me every time I see her who is to get what but honestly, I think once she is gone we will end up not taking much of what she wants us to have. All kinds of crystal and figurines that she collected (many of which were damaged in earthquakes in California), silver tea set. We just don’t have places for those things so they will go into boxes to be stored somewhere forever. Makes no sense. And I already have 3 sets of Sabbath candlesticks and I think she has 2 more sets earmarked for me. I'll give one to dd but no idea what I'll do with the rest.
Pinky – glad you are on the mend finally. I think every area must have their own version of a harvest meal. In Door County is is a fish boil - similar to what you described and they use white fish. Cook it over an open fire in a big kettle.
Angie – I marinate my brisket overnight, then cook it in the roasting bags with the marinade for the time that it says on the instructions for the roasting bag. It is faster that way and makes a ton of gravy.
I'm reading The Museum of Extraordinary things and I'm a bit ambivilant about it, but The Kill Shot (audio) is very good.

Gareth, I happen to be doing some laundry today and always think of you when I start!
Robin, would it be OK if one said “Happy Holidays” to each one? So, I take it the special event on the 29th was not a religious event? It was just a random event held there? What do you think they’ll do? Very nice of you to include DDIL’s grandparents. I’m sure they’ll appreciate the invite and have a wonderful time. I guess I don’t understand why items in a will need to be appraised? Aren’t they still gifts? It seems doing that would open up a can of worms where the can needn’t be opened! I understand the legality part but why do it unless it’s asked for.
Karen, I think you’re right on top of things! I can’t help but think, though, that penny-pinchers would be just the ones to hide money! How are you and DH feeling? I’m very glad you’re still going on your getaway - you NEED this getaway!

Gareth and Anngie, I'm doing some laundry today, too. Monday is usually a stay-in-house day so I'm dusting and vacuuming, too.
We got a little bit of rain last night. Right now it is 80 degrees with the humidity at 88%.
What I have noticed at estate sales is that generally children of baby boomers don't want their parents collections or their extra sets of china. I didn't know items in a will had to be appraised either.
Karen, I am amazed your DB doesn't use computers. It seems like everyone at least has an e-mail account. I really use Google a lot.

Karen, hope the meeting went well today. Enjoy your trip to Minoqua. Great that you will still be online. So nice that you are getting away, probably a perfect time.
Anngie, Happy Holidays is fine. The event on the 29th is their 30th anniversary.
Pinky, interesting what they have to do with the cows. I know that the rain really messed up the planting. Always something to keep them busy
Gareth, the day definitely got away from me today, or maybe I wish it did. I was extremely busy.
Marsha, it ends up that we are having 17 I think. I didn't think our cousins kids would all come, and so maybe I miscounted altogether. Who knows.
The reason they appraise the jewelry is if there is any thought that there might be estate tax due on it. If there is no mention of it in the will, like "Marsha gets my diamond engagement ring", they won't ask how much mom's engagement ring is worth. It is not as much of a concern now because the estate tax limit is so high, but it used to be more of a concern. Less than 1% of all people have to pay estate tax, and Pinky you will be happy to know that no one ever lost the family farm because of estate taxes. Not that people don't lose the family farm for other reasons, I know farming is very difficult, and really has to be operated like a business, which is not easy.
