Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Warm day expected here, with storms/rain coming during the night tonight. Our September is the rainiest on record. And it just keeps raining. Our farmers do not know when they will be able to get in the fields.
Gareth, I agree, would love a nice, long fall. How are the WW meetings going by you? Are they well attended? Have you heard anything about the new plan people are gossiping about?
Pinky, thank you for the description about the stew, now I remember, you have told us about it before, and as Marsha said, it is like the fish boil's in this area. The only thing I would not really care for in the recipe is the shrimp. For some reason I just shy away from it.
Marsha, I have that issue too, with sugar. The bad thing with me, is, once I get going with it, it becomes a habit that takes a lot of effort to break. Which is where I am now, so I will ride it out till next Monday, then buckle down. The area you are talking about, by the hospitals, Astor Neighborhood, from what I recall is not cheap! Once you leave that historic neighborhood, you are in the more undesirable areas of the city. I would not live there, so I would not want my brother, who will be dealing with chemo, to live there. I believe that about your rain gauge!!! This is beyond ridiculous...I miss my rain gauge.
Anngie, you are right, as penny pinchers must be in the frame of mind like hoarders. I think, after sitting thru the few meetings with my DB yesterday, anything is possible, going into his house, eventually, as to what we will find. LOL....you had to ask about my DH!!! He thinks he might have an infection, so he will be calling his Urologist first thing this morning. Oh well, it is what it is. Otherwise he is hanging in there, pretty good.
Carol, lol, for a few years I was amazed that basically both my brothers did not want anything to do with computers, or anything tech. My older brother finally got a smart phone, and actually got on FB. That did not last long, he thought FB was stupid and foolish, so he got off it. My little brother has a smart phone, but why I do not know. I asked him yesterday if he texts...hahaha, of course he looked at me like he was confused and said no. Really??? You can't even text?? I love Google....I would have had such great grades, if we had that when we were in high school!!! Whew! your 80 degrees and 88% humidity would be a bit much for me.
Robin, thank you. All I have to do, is be up there in that small city, and I am happy. I could go sit on one of their many benches along their small downtown area, and I would be content. Weird huh? DB does not have anything of value, to go in the will. They are getting some kind of appraisal of his house, for a form he has to sign, so there is no issue, if he passes before he sells the house. He does have more money with his financial advisor than I thought.
Busy day today, what with last minute laundry to do, packing, then DGS football game at 4pm.
Need more coffee. Have a wonderful Tuesday!

DH is on his way out early today for court, it is the next county, and the courthouse is 50 miles from our house. He is taking my Prius so he can stay in the HOV lane and make it quicker.
Karen, if you haven't been in your DB's house in a while, you never know. We don't appraise houses unless after death the family is going to keep it, because the value for estate purposes is whatever it sells for. I know you said your DB had more in investments that you thought, but seeing as there is only an estate tax due if someone has over $11.14 million, very few people have to worry about that.
Pinky, forgot to mention about the frogmore stew. I know they make other things in a similar fashion, but seeing as we love kielbasa, that sounds interesting. My DH doesn't usually eat corn on the cob though, maybe once his teeth are totally fixed he will. Last week for the tailgate we bought freshly made kielbasa from a Polish store, and also their sauerkraut. We grilled the kielbasa. It was delicious. We as usual had a lot of food, so took home the extra, and made it for dinner.
Tonight I will try to get some things done in the house, cleaning up one of my DS's rooms that we sometimes go into, it has a couch, the other room still has this bunk bed thing we got our DS years ago, I think we can take it apart and make the bottom into a futon couch, we should really do that.

quiet here at home still. No news. No gym this morning and no walk. I stayed in bed. I was actually asleep when the alarm went off which is really unusual these days, so I hit the snooze several times. I did a load of laundry. Thought about doing a yoga you tube but didn't feel that ambitious.
Last night dh casually mentioned that his brother will be here a week from tomorrow. He was originally coming the weekend I'll be in Madison with dd's sorority but his client changed his dates and dh never told me when he rescheduled. That's the day after Rosh Hashanah and coming up fast. I told dh he has to get up off his rear end and start working on cleaning up the house.

Karen--Yes quick get your suitcase packed so you are ready to get out of Dodge---LOL!!! That is the thing about the frogmore stew---you only have to eat out of it what you want. With the liquid all drained off of it and using tongs you pick out what you want. There are several that do not care for shrimp and they just do not take any. A couple of the DGC do not like potatoes but they like everything else etc. Are you heading out early in the morning? Hope your DH does not have an infection and if he does hope he feels well while you are gone. Have fun!!
Robin---sounds like you are reorganizing to make better use of your DS's old rooms, might as well. Some day you will need to make one of those room into a toy room or DGC room!!!!! As I mentioned to Karen you can pick and choose off of the serving dish what you want and don't want of the frogmore stew as all the liquid as been drained. Or you can be like our 7 year old DGD that lost her bottom and top 2 teeth so all 4 teeth are gone, this was pre sweetcorn season so we cut the corn off the cob for her.
I should best get busy with my messes I have pulled out to reorganize---as they say it has to get better before it gets worse right??

Hi Marsha! Why do men do that----they never think it is any big deal to have someone come and really why should they think it is a big deal when most men do not help with the preparation of quests----UUUGGGHHHHH!

I just got back from my last PT appointment. I’ve been let go! lol. She doesn’t feel enough progress has been made so suggested I go back to the doctor and perhaps have an MRI. I have an appointment in early November. We’ll see. Until then I’ll continue with the various exercises just to feel like I’m “doing something”. Has anyone here been helped with PT? I’m beginning to think it was a long shot - and here I am!
Robin, I’m learning a lot from you re estates, etc.! Interesting info! We’re actually in the middle of the same thing - clearing out DS2’s bedroom. We did DS1 room - put in a queen bed (our old one) and painted. Now it’s time to get started on the other. We just need him to go through the closet!
Pinky, I’m wondering why, once everything’s cooked, it’s drained? Wouldn’t it make good stock for soup? I love soup - I could eat it every day!
Marsha, I had to laugh at these DH’s! Nothing is important unless it’s important to them! Now that it’s been brought to his attention, will he get started?
Karen, hope DH is OK. I REALLY want you to go on this getaway!

Karen, warmer here today too with rain predicted overnight. 12Âş warmer walking this morning so didn't need my windbreaker. Hope it's nothing serious with DH to interfere with your trip.
Pinky, that stew sounds interesting. I really miss eating corn on the cob. With the veneers on my front teeth the dentist said no more eating corn off the cob or biting into a whole apple that I miss too. Now that I have to cut my apple up and like with sweet corn it's just not the same.
Anngie, PT never worked for me. Again I can't recommend a chiropractor enough. Worth a try anyway.
Marsha, I wouldn't be happy with my DH either if he neglected to tell me of a change in plans.
Robin, have fun reorganizing!
My later shift day. Things to do before then. I'll finish listening to The Last Mrs Parrish too. I've really enjoyed it. I'll have to look into more of Liv Constantine's books.

With Anngie and Gareth's questions I thought I would just copy and paste this to explain it a little further as it is not meant to actually be a stew and the pieces would be quite large to eat as soup. The pictures wouldn't copy and paste so if you want to see what the outcome actually looks like google Frogmore Stew and many pictures will come up so you can see what the finished product looks like and that might help understand it more. Interesting info if you want to read more about it:
Southern Cuisine History: Frogmore Stew OCTOBER 4, 2012 Frogmore Stew on NewspaperEvery coastal town seems to have a version of a seafood boil and their own way of making it. Charleston has a great local seafood boil, but the ingredients are as debated as the proper name for it. Locally, you will hear it called Beaufort Stew, Beaufort Boil, or Lowcountry Boil, although it is most commonly referred to as Frogmore Stew – a delicious combination of boiled shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes.
Don’t worry, it does not contain frogs and it isn’t even actually a stew. Unlike its cousins, bouillabasse and cioppino, Frogmore Stew is drained from its cooking liquid and served on a newspaper covered table.
Lowcountry BoilThe name Frogmore comes from the small town on St. Helena Island, near Beaufort, SC. There are many stories about the origin of Frogmore Stew. One story says that a shrimper in Frogmore was running low on food and couldn’t decide what to cook for dinner. He chose to boil some potatoes, sausage and corn together and added some shrimp since there was never a short supply of shrimp around his home. He soon realized how great the items complemented each other and the recipe was passed around to local seafood restaurants.
Another story alleges the origins of the stew came from Richard Gay, owner of the Gay Seafood Company on St. Helena Island, SC. The story goes that one weekend while on duty with the National Guard he made the stew in an effort to serve over 100 of his fellow guardsmen. Frogmore Stew became far more well known after it was featured on the cover of Gourmet Magazine in the 1980s. In 2005, The Travel Channel featured Richard’s brother, Charles Gay, cooking Frogmore Stew in its popular program, Taste of America with Mark DeCarlo.
Although everyone has their own “secret” ingredient to Frogmore Stew, the basic recipe is as follows:
Lowcountry Frogmore Stew
4 lbs. small red potatoes 3 lbs. shrimp, unshelled 1 lb. smoked sausage, (such as Kielbasa) sliced into pieces 6 ears of sweet corn, husked and cut into thirds 1 Tbsp Old Bay seasoning Bring about a gallon of water to a boil. Add the potatoes and Old Bay seasoning and cook five minutes. Add the sausage and boil for 5 minutes. Then, add the corn and boil another 5 minutes. Lastly, add the shrimp and boil 3 more minutes. Drain and serve.
Some people add in crab or cook the stew in beer. Others add in onions, lemons and/or celery. Our own Chef Michelle Weaver of Charleston Grill is currently featuring Frogmore Stew on the menu and it features Crab, Shrimp, Clams, Potatoes, Corn, and Andouille. Whether you cook it yourself or order it at Charleston Grill there is one thing for certain – there will not be any left!

Pinky, I couldn't think of what I had heard that called, definitely not Frogmore Stew, but a Low Country Boil is really familiar. One day I will make it though because it is just so easy. DH always wants dinner, I don't feel like cooking, so not much way to compromise. The reason I like to make meatloaf is because that is easy to me. And, if we have steak, he want the expensive Prime porterhouse, so not an everyday meal in my mind. If he would only eat roast chicken, it would be great. Another thing is the sheet pan dinners, but they are best with chicken cutlets and he doesn't always want to eat that, and it still has to be prepped.
