Report after my lunch with DGD12 at the junior high (middle school) I had a great time! I was waiting in the lunch room and she led me to the table where she and her friends eat lunch. She introduced me to her friends and they were all friendly and then ate their lunch. DGD and I had a nice visit while she ate her chicken nuggets and waffle fries. I literally didn't have one bite as I was waiting until I got home! She let me take a quick picture of her but cautioned me not to post it publicly (against school policy because another student could accidentally be in the photo. I sent the pic to her Mom and DH.) There were about 400 students in the lunch room and they were well behaved. Loud but no food fights! HA! The hardest thing for me was to see how hard it was to get into the building. I pressed a button in the front hallway and showed my drivers license to a camera on the wall. That was recorded and someone pressed a button to allow me access to the front office only. Then, my license was scanned to be sure I was not on the state list for warrants, sex offender lists and who knows what else. Anyway, I got my name badge which gave me access to the building through a different locked door. I understand the reasons why we have strict security but it saddens me. Luckily though, the kids just accept it as another day at school. Thank goodness for that. DGD suggested I come back again for her birthday in January and I could bring cookies to her lunch mates. Why, of course I will!

Heather Good luck.
Linda I understand why they have the security they do in schools now but it is just so sad it has to be that way.

linda72, Glad you had a fun time. I’m glad to see the security measures. I’d like to see it be mandatory everywhere. I went for a walk earlier (it was 74° and lovely outside). I have an elementary school just up the corner. As I walked back home along the fenceline on my street, I noticed that a gate at the farthest corner of the school grounds (which are large, with a huge greenbelt) was unlatched and partially opened. I wondered if that was supposed to be. All kinds of kids were on the play area and anyone could have just walked in that gate and directly to the play area. All of our elementary schools here are totally unsuitable for the type of security you encountered. The classrooms are all in one-story buildings, with about 4 classrooms per building, and accessed from outside doors on the buildings. The office is its own building, as is the multi-use building. There are no hallways that could be secured.

zazzles , My school district has spent a lot of money to upgrade security in the schools. However, the old high school I worked at has 20 portable buildings on their grounds and there is no way to secure them. Students walk from them to the main building back and forth during the day. I'm glad I no longer work there and have to worry about the possibilities of terrorism. finreporter , in case you see this: remember my report of the elementary school last week and the parents in the lunch room? Well, you'll be interested to know I was literally the only parent or grandparent in the lunch room and I did not feed DGD12, other than to bring her lunch from Chick Fil-A. Another mother brought her daughter a birthday lunch from Chick Fil-A but she didn't stay! Nice to see the kids in 6,7, 8th grades were responsible for feeding themselves!

Haha good! I love kids feeding themselves otherwise they end up like Lena Dunham (actress whom I can't stand who was photographed having her assistant feeding her on the set of "Girls ").
I'm surprised that anyone is allowed to come have lunch with their elementary or middle school child though. Our campus is on lockdown and no one can come to hang out unless they are there to volunteer help in the classroom as a room parent. No parents can sit out there and have lunch with the kids an no one can be there without having checked in at the office and have their DL or ID scanned. The one time I came at lunch to pick up my kids for a road trip, although I had checked in at the front office and had permission to go back and get them , I was given quite the stare down from the yard attendants. They're good at picking out what looks like it does not belong! I appreciate how hyper aware they are.
