Week 1 Day 3 Eat sitting down
We need to be absolutely aware of everything we put into our mouths. For those of you that have mastered eating while sitting down, please share what it took to make this happen and how this helps you. For those of us who still have some more work to do in this area, can you put your finger on what needs to happen for you to be more successful with this behavior?

Until I read the Beck book, I was never aware of eating while standing up. Whoa, I used to do that a lot! Not meals because I always sit down for those. But, the little bites while snacking happened a lot. So, I really had to think about that when I had snacks. It's forced me to think more about whether I wanted to eat since I had to sit down. I actually still stand while having a sliced apple with DH but I'm learning to take a few slices off the plate and sit at the bar to eat and visit with him.
I think Beck is trying to teach us to always be aware of the food we put in our mouth. If you want to eat it, sit down and focus on the food. Eating mindlessly while walking through the kitchen is a recipe for over eating.

I agree with Linda that anything that leads to distracted eating is bad news. I almost always sit down, always did. Never stood to eat things in the kitchen. Now I sometimes stand and eat my salad while I make the rest of dinner. When my husband use to be out in the evenings I use to walk around the house eating my salad to get steps on my fitbit.
I almost always eat with distractions even though I am sitting down. Not good because that also leads to not paying attention to my eating. Sitting here thinking about how I probably should pay more attention to my lunch as I eat by the computer.
I believe that eating sitting down without distraction while eating slowly and mindfully is best.

I sometimes eat standing up for snacks, I guess I need to be more mindful of that because I can see how that would make me think, even subconsciously, that snacks don't count and aren't as important as a meal, which we all know is magical thinking! I do sit down for meals but I think I eat too fast at times, so I need to work on that.

This is a good one to make a self rule about. I always eat meals sitting down. Snacks are either eaten while walking around the kitchen or sitting on the couch. Maybe a rule to eat snacks at the table would assist in eliminating that mindless eating. I think that not sitting down to snack or eat involves those bites, licks and tastes we are always being warned against. It's probably a good idea not to walk and eat at Sam's Club or Costco either. I may break my rule about no post it notes on the refrigerator and put one there that says Eat Sitting Down!

I think sitting down makes the eating legit. Like "what I eat hovering over the sink doesn't count". I think it makes you aware of the conscious decision to eat.

After going through the last Beck review,I have learned to sit down to eat even snacks. At my meals I eat slowly especially when I'm eating salad.I do this so I can taste and like each bite.I normally only eat a snack in the evening and I will sit down at the kitchen table b/c that is when I give the dog her snacks.I have learned everything seems to taste better the slower I eat and I feel comfortable sooner as well.
