When buying foods what ingredients do you stay away from?

I stay away from prepared foods that have milk in them because of my lactose intolerance. I mostly buy unprocessed food. My bread and my bean soups have a long list of ingredients though. I should stay away from salt but I don't because I don't want to make my own beans and bean soup.

Interesting question...
I stay away from:
* Animal and fish meat (mostly vegetarian/vegan these days)
* Soda, juices, refined foods
I tend to buy grain and beans raw and cook at home.

We try to buy/eat as little processed food as possible. Also stay away from hormone-treated milk/cheese products and look for hormone-free options always. No soda, fruit juices. I make my own lemonade so I know what's in it. I do drink some Crystal Light lemonade in a pinch, which I realize is completely processed shit, but only when I need hydration and am out of my home made lemonade. No meats of any kind, nor eggs.

I soak them overnight OR pour boiling water over them and leave for about an hour
Pour soak water off Put into pressure cooker covering by about an inch with water put a bit of oil on top of the water (helps prevent the valve from sticking) Boil for whatever time the chart says for the type of dry beans I am cooking
You can put onions and garlic in with the beans and vegetables but no salt, vinegar and maybe other things that prevent cooking.

I steer clear of processed foods except for low-sodium deli turkey breast. Any products that are high in sugar or salt are off our list.

Judy, the easiest way to cook dry beans and legumes is to buy yourself an InstaPot, it changed our life! We never wanted to deal with dry beans because they seem to never turn out well no matter how long we soak them, but the InstaPot is a pressure cooker and it's so easy to use, now we can make perfect beans in about an hour including cooling time.

I have not seen an instapot and doubt with the electricity outages and fluctuations it would work well here. I have the pressure cooker that is nearly thirty years old and change the gasket when it splits and so far so good. My sister said there is also an instapot that does rice and is a slow cooker all in one?

My grandmother had a pressure cooker like you have Cathy, but they always scared the hell out of me! The InstaPot is really easy to use. Apparently there's a new model that even does su vide/poaching. Basically instead of being a crockpot slow cooker, it's a fast pot cooker. You can make rice, cook beans, cook meats. I recently used it to make steamed artichokes because they take forever on the stove, and it was so easy. I like that you can set it and forget it. So I can put all the ingredients for a soup into it, set it and turn it on, and then leave the house and it will cook, cool down and even keep warm if I want it to, until I want to use it.

My sister is buying one - she ruined either her slow cooker or rice cooker by putting the food in without the liner. I have a NICE Fissler pressure cooker that is stainless steel. When the top is put on the edges overlap and lock in a way that it cannot explode...though the gasket can tear and then steam will escape and perhaps make a bit of a mess. They don't sell instapots in Lebanon. I will find it interesting to find out what my sister thinks of hers after she starts using it.
