Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Nice day expected one more time, then the rain comes during the night.
Gareth, I think I would have to pass on the book you are reading, too close to home. Yes that is right, I sure do not want any amount of snow, and I just saw on TV that the East coast is expecting rain, they had on there some town, named Sanwich is expecting 8" of rain. No thanks!
Carol, I have not seen all of DB house, but from what I am told by other siblings, there is really nothing worth saving. When I finally move him out, we will take him to one of the consignment/resale shops to get him some furniture. With what you said about space heaters, do you not have a furnace?
Pinky, glad your farmers are getting things done, hope they all finish before it is too late. All the corn crops are still not ready yet here, you can see green in the crops. I do not have the recipe for chicken booyah. I suppose it can be googled. I do know it is a mix of chicken and beef, some places leave the chicken bones in, but others take them out.
Anngie, that is the weird thing, with DB and the condition of his house. He does not seem the least embarrassed by it. The first time my DH and I went in there, he did not seem to mind. I know I would have died from embarrassment. He seems to go back and forth about moving. The book you mentioned that you were running to the library for, I looked into on Overdrive, and as it sounded interesting, I put a hold on it, which will take quite awhile to come in.
Hope the fast went well for Marsha and Robin.
In the news here in town, the police went into a duplex and cited a woman for having 65 cats! OMG!! How could she??? I freak out just thinking about the inside of that place!! Of course they took them all away.
What a fun time yesterday, at DGS last football game of the season for middle school. He got to play center for the first half of the game, and did so good!! The score was tied at 0 till the last 54 seconds then "our" team scored a touchdown, so the team finished the season with a win. We wanted to take him out for ice cream to celebrate but his parents are strict about school nights.
Weather guy is showing highs of 45 this weekend, with winds and rain showers. We are planning on staying in all weekend.
One of the Independent living communities that we (my sister and I) were really hoping my DB could move to, called me back, saying there is no openings, and there won't be any, for 9 to 12 months. It would have been the perfect place for him, and he did want to go there and tour it. I have been looking and looking for a place for him, and am not finding anything comparable. I am at a loss. Looks like he will be staying in his house for the winter.
Need to get a move on, as this morning is DH bladder treatment. Have a nice day everyone.

It starting raining in the night and still raining lightly now. Rain is supposed to pick up this afternoon and then changing to snow tonight---UUUGGGHHHH! We still are in the area of a lighter amount of snow but still------really it is only Oct. 10th. In the western part of SD and even some schools in the central part of the state are closed or a delayed start because of the snow.
Karen---Looks like are harvesting will be on hold until next week again with this weather. I will google the soup recipe. Your day yesterday with DGS football game sounds like fun---so glad they ended the season with a win. Our DD and our DS#2 are pretty strict about sticking to schedule too, but shoot how fun that would have been to have celebrated with ice cream.
Anngie---I feel like I needed to reply to you on something but cannot remember---I will check back to yesterday and see.
Not sure what the day holds yet but I do have some things to go through in the old house that I have been procrastinating about so a good day to do that I guess. So glad I finished up mowing yesterday and cleaning out my flower pots and such. Crazy that I can mow one day and expect snow the next. When I drove my lawn mower into the shed last night my thought was hope this is the last time this year I have to use it.

Yom Kippur was fine and I’m always glad when the fast is over. It wasn’t that bad this year. I altered my pre-fast meal a number of years ago after doing some research and I’ve found one that really makes it easy, plus forcing a lot of water down the day before helps to avoid the dehydration headaches. I was hungry mid afternoon but that passed. We stayed at the synagogue for break the fast. DS had gone home.
Karen – I’m taking the bus to Madison. I don’t do highway driving if I can avoid it and I am actually looking forward to the down time sitting on a bus with nothing to do but read or look out the window. Dd and I take the bus to Milwaukee to catch the train when we go on our Chicago trip and I am very comfortable on mass transit. I don’t know if I mentioned but I keep kosher which means I don’t eat pork or shellfish at all and no meat or chicken out of my house so that is why I’ve never had booyah. There is a brand new place near me called Courtyard but I don’t know if it is a memory care facility or just assisted living. Just opened this summer. I saw that story about the 65 cats and dh and I agreed that we hope ds’ gf doesn’t see it because she will come home with more cats.
Pinky – I have noticed that when my audio books are close to expiring the library lets me put them back on hold before the expiration. I realize it’s too late for the book you posted about yesterday but something to keep in mind for next time.
My walking buddy texted this morning to say she has decided not to sell her house after all and bought a security system instead so now she feels safe there. We are going to meet on Tuesday to walk but it will still be dark so we will see how that feels.
Still reading Summer of 69 which I'm enjoying now that I'm about half done. I'm listening to the 3rd Mitch Rapp (Transfer of Power). I gave up on Maisie Dobbs. Maybe I'll go back to it someday as a filler but it was beginning to annoy me. I know authors use detail to set the scene so the reader can picture everything in their mind but I think there is too much unnecessary detail in this book.

Our nice Fall weather is just a memory now. It's just one of those dreary, gloomy, rainy days that's nice to be indoors. It started raining while I was at work. Only in the 50's and breezy too. Temps drop tomorrow into the 40's. Freeze watch tomorrow night. At least no snow in the forecast.
I'm plugging away with When Breath Becomes Air. Glad it's a short book or I just may have given up on it. Too much details on all his case histories during his residency which to me really doesn't have all that much bearing to his story.
To clarify a little about DH's new iPhone 11 and his hearing aid. With bluetooth it connects to his hearing aid. Connects fine to his hearing aid app. Goes through just fine on phone calls but skips in and out playing his music which is an Apple issue that Apple is working on. Hopefully it's soon. I have no problem with my iPhone X listening to my audio books through my hearing aids which I'm glad I didn't upgrade my phone. I'm waiting until next year when the iPhone 12's come out but now I'm worrying then I might have the same problem. I wouldn't be as patient as DH waiting for a fix. That's the trouble with new phones they don't always play nice with some apps at first.
Karen, how's DH feeling? You haven't said anything for awhile about your knees. No more pain? I'm sure that woman with all the cats had good intentions to begin with rescuing cats but it got out of hand. So sad there's so many homeless cats and dogs.
Pinky, thought of you when I saw last night's local news. They were interviewing a farmer about the problems farmers here are having harvesting their fields because of the weather. Hope the snow misses you!
Marsha, how far away are you from Madison? Enjoy your weekend!
Back to work again later. Looking forward to a day off tomorrow. Good day to stay in with the forecast. I'm sure it'll be indoor walking. I'm such a fair weather walker anymore.

Marsha---I notice that if a book is not loaned out to someone else after myself and it is available it will ask me if I want to renew but have never noticed being asked when it will be unavailable. I will pay closer attention as I may be missing something. Glad that your friend has decided to stay in the neighborhood and will hopefully feel safe with her security system. Hope you get some good walking time together.
On the topic of home security I just read yesterday that a person should put their car keys by their beds at night and therefore if you here someone trying to break in you can hit the panic button on the key fob and that alarm sound most likely will spook the unwanted visitor away, pretty much like a security system.
Gareth---Thanks--I hope it misses us too, everyone is really getting worried about the harvest season and crops. I wouldn't have known about the hearing aid/phone app but I was with DMIL when she got her last set of hearing aids and that was brought up to her, a nice feature.
About 65 cats in the house, that just gives me the willys!!!!! I do like cats very much and we have had a housecat over the years(Just One) and that is okay but 65 ----OMG. I can't even imagine the smell in that house or how these cats must get on the cupboards and jump on everything---yuck!!! Our cat was an awesome housecat where it never jumped on cupboards or the table and wouldn't eat any human food if given, would only eat catfood which I found very interesting. If there was ever any food on the floor she might go up to it and smell it and then walk away. I know that is unusual so the visual of 65 cats in the home does not appeal to me. We have about a dozen barn cats right now and that is even plenty for the barn in my honest opinion. Our cat lived to be 17 years old and as much as we enjoyed her I said never again in the house. Just got tired of the litter box and getting some where and seeing hair on my clothing. I am not against others that enjoy their house pets, just don't want to do it myself anymore.

Gareth - Madison is about 2-1/4 hour drive but on the bus with the stops it will take about 3-1/2 hours I think.
Pinky - I feel the same way about cats. I had one for 19 years. Dh also had a cat so when we got married we had 2. When mine died (the last one to go) I said no more litter boxes! I will say that even though ds and gf have 3 cats the house never smells. I don't know whether it is because they are so good about cleaning or if litter has improved that much. I think it is the latter because ds commented one day he had to get home because it was trash day which meant he had to do the litter boxes. I scooped every day and lived in fear that my house smelled and I just never noticed. I'd much rather clean the poop in the yard than in a litter box. Much prefer my dog.

Karen, we have central heating. It is an old unit, every year we think this will be the winter it goes out. Anyway, we always have the service guy check it out before we turn it on. Right now it is the 80s. It is supposed to get quite a bit cooler, but next week it will be warm again. We have the HVAC out when it appears we are really into cooler weather.
I can't imagine 65 cats. DD and DSIL had 4 when they married. They have 2 litter boxes and keep them scooped. I haven't noticed a odor. They had to have 2 of their cats down so now just have 2 left. They are pretty old and one is very crotchety so I don't think they will be getting more anytime soon. A few years ago, our town passed an ordinance limiting the number of cats you could have. Apparently, a woman had like 20 and the neighbors complained about the noise and the smell. Later, they had to pass another ordinance about goats for the same reason. Of course, they weren't in the house so the noise was really loud.
I have read that about car keys. Whenever DH is out of town, I put them on the nightstand.
Karen, I hope you find a place for your brother. We were very lucky to find a place for DMIL when she needed to move.
I did my Walmart run this morning. Before that I went to the book fair at the school where I used to work. I found 3 books for DGS. We will take one when we go there Saturday and save the others for Christmas. The librarian I worked with finally retired last spring. The new person has really made it look nice and neat. It used to have stacks of papers and books everywhere. It drove me crazy, but I couldn't do anything about it since I was the assistant. I heard she had to stay late and come in on Saturdays to get everything cleared out.

Sunny and 65 here today. I turned off the furnace and opened the windows.
Marsha, Safe travels and enjoy your weekend! The bus ride should be relaxing and maybe get some reading time in! You’re right about unnecessary detail in books. Have you ever read any in the Outlander series? I’ve never read so much detail - no wonder some of the books are 1,000 pages! Good news on your walking buddy! Odd she didn’t think of installing a security system before deciding to sell.
Pinky, I sure wish the weather would straighten up for you so you can get the harvesting done. I can only imagine how much stress that is for farmers. I believe I heard that same suggestion re the car keys on the news just the other night. I bet it’ll work!
Karen, you know, I think I’d still tour that independent living center despite the fact they said 9-12 mos. and put his name on the list, too. (at least put his name on the list) You NEVER know what will happen. Time flies and it could take 9 mos. just to get him there. Especially if it’s contingent on him selling his property. Just my thoughts.
Every so often there’s a dog/cat hoarding situation in the news. Some people really love animals and think they’re helping - until it gets out of hand. Others, I’m not so sure of. We’re on our third - and last - dog. We’ve never had a cat. Oddly enough, my DS1 is very allergic to cats and we never knew this until his middle school years when he went to a friend’s house, who had a cat, and his throat started closing up! He knew enough to go outside and breathe in fresh air. It worked immediately, thank goodness. (he never even saw the cat)

Anngie - I love the Outlander books. Yes a lot of detail but in that case I think the detail helped to be able to understand the historical context for the story. In Maise Dobbs it seems like it's "she put on her brown shoes and her matching brown purse and cloche hat. She fastened the hat with a hatpin...." I don't really care what color her shoes and purse were.

Karen, sorry about not finding a place for your DB. Do you think he will get worse as time goes on so many would be better with assisted living?
I somehow missed about the 65 cats, maybe it was something on the news I did not see.
I also did quite well with the fast. We went to my friend's house for break fast. Marsha, I wish our temple would do something like that, but I am sure it would be much too big of a turn out if they did. I like public transportation too, but not too big a fan of buses, I prefer trains. But, you do what is available.
I am exhausted, and I have mah jongg tonight. We hired a new secretary who started today, it was a busy day, 2 client meetings where documents needed signing and witnessing, teaching her things, lots of phone calls, printing out documents and assembling them, mailing, it was just everything at once to try to teach her. Of course she can't learn it all in one day, but we tried to do as much as we can. I have to go raid my piggy bank for quarters now because I did not win the last few times we played. At least I have left over filet mignon from Tuesday. Marsha, I know it is not kosher, but I have been making a filet roast for a number of years now. I had chicken soup in the freezer, so made matzoh balls, had challah, and made a noodle kugel and roasted brussel sprouts. A little crumb cake for dessert.
