Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good Saturday morning. Nice day expected, with a high of 51. I just hit me, as I was typing in the dates, that this month is almost over! We are getting way too close to winter.
Pinky, ugh!!! Your lows for the upcoming week sounds so depressing! What you get, we will get too, eventually. I think they are saying a chance of snow for the Trick or Treaters. Now that you mention starting christmas shopping, I felt that way, walking thru Kohl's the other day, wish I had the time to start it! I too have a DGD birthday in November, in fact on Thanksgiving day. She thinks she is pretty neat because of that, lol! I bet I have that same health app on my phone, I use it everyday. I keep my phone in my pocket when I go anywhere, for the steps.
Gareth, I am so glad that your DH trip to ER turned out good. What happened to you, almost happened to me, back in 07, when I was going thru so many trips to ER with DH. He would pick the middle of the night to have to go, and it was so hard to wake up. So I know just what you went thru. Did you have off of work yesterday? I think it was because I knew I had that bag of self rising flour in the pantry, that made me make the pizza. Have not used it since, lol. I would love to make that pizza again, but it is a lot of steps, between kneeding the dough, and the cooking of the alfredo sauce.
Carol, I had something like that happen to my DH too, a few years ago, his work was going to call a rescue squad for him, but he said he could drive to ER. So I had to meet him there, and of course they kept him overnight, so I had to find someone to bring his car home. Glad to hear your DH is doing good. Thank you, I just feel so bad for my DB, as he is all alone now in the world, with never getting married, and both of our siblings gone for the winter. Lol, he is stuck with me! Is your wet gloomy weather because of that tropical depression? My DH mentioned that, about asbestos. This eventually could turn into a real headache!
Robin, that licensing thing is so confusing, since before you brought it up, I had never heard of it. I think IF the Packers have it, it is because they just wanted to get more money out of the fans, when they added on to the stadium. I agree totally about the mold, and my DH mentioned too, that if there is asbestos, that is a whole other can of worms! I will read romances, once and awhile, I just can't read those all the time.
Going to make the kids a filling breakfast, then run them home. We want to watch the Badger/Ohio football game on TV, probably won't see the beginning, as it starts at 11 am. Then we are meeting DD1 and her DH for dinner at Margurita's. This eating out has got to stop, as I do want to refocus on the program.
Have a great day everyone.

Karen, I never gave asbestos a thought! You’re right, this could be a real problem. If there is asbestos, it would not be an easy tear down. I’ll bet there would be an asbestos remediation before they could actually tear down the house! It’s a good idea you have to step back and just wait and see. You’re being a wonderful sister to DB, Karen! No regrets.
For those of you who enjoyed A Man Called Ove, I think I came upon another similar, but different book to read. It’s called Calling Major Tom by David M. Barnett. A little odd, maybe, but a younger version of Ove. As soon as I finish A Well Behaved Woman I’ll start it.
I’ve bought flour - such as self-rising, bread flour, wheat, etc. and froze it knowing I wouldn’t be using it up right away. Has anyone else tried this? I’m assuming it’s OK to do this and that the quality is still there!

I have spent about an hour on the phone with Verizon because they keep overcharging me for our phone and internet service in the house, and they can't seem to correct it. I am getting so fed up I am going to report them to the Public Service Commission. Each month my bill comes and it is $50 higher than it is supposed to be. Now they say they have put it in to their back office to over-ride and correct it.
As far as asbestos goes in the house Karen, that is more of a problem if there are pipes wrapped in asbestos. If it is tile, especially if they tear down the house, it is not a big deal. It is also not a big deal for him to be in a house that has asbestos tile, it is when it gets removed that it causes problems because that is when particles go into the air. I just had a discussion about that with a home inspector from my networking group because I know that there is asbestos tile under carpet in DM's house. He said it has a tiny percentage of asbestos so not as big a deal as people make it out to be. The mold is an issue though. The name of the book, if you want to look for it to see if it is still free for Kindle, is Small Town Secrets.
I finished the book Ask Again Yes yesterday before dinner. I am not sure why I loved it, but I did. Interesting story that spanned time having to do with 2 families and things that went on. I can't say too much without giving away the story. It's a bit windy here, but blue skies and the temp will get into the 60's. I had a lovely dinner with 2 friends last night. When I think about it, I realize how long we have been friends. Although they are "new" friends, I met one when our 34 year olds were in a 2 year old toddler program, and the other one a few years later. One of them and her ex were our closest friends before they divorced. We went on 2 big trips with them, and went out with them and the 4 kids for dinner almost every Friday night when the kids were little. They have been divorced for about 18 years already. The other one is the family that we have over on the Jewish New Year, and we went on a number of cruises with their family and another family a number of times. I was talking about someone last night, and then she said something about knowing her from a cruise. I was describing her and her husband because they were at the wedding, and she reminded me about the cruises.
I have 2 books that came in from the library, The Giver of Stars, by Jojo Moyes. It is about the Kentucky library system that was started by Eleanor Roosevelt during the Depression, part of the same story line as The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek. Also, The Guardian by Grisham. After I wasted all morning on the phone with Verizon, my load of laundry finished, so I have to put it in the dryer, then will go out and do some food shopping. Then hopefully read until DH comes home.

Robin, some companies need to learn the definition of customer service. I hate when you have to wait so long or when they transfer you to another person and you have to tell them the whole problem again. I hope you get it worked out. Is there a Verizon office you could go to and deal with them in person?
I keep flour in the deep freeze. If it has been opened I make sure to tape it shut. The only drawback I have come across is one time we lost power and a bunch of stuff started thawing and the flour absorbed the odor. Of course, something like that doesn't happen very often.
We don't have much planned today. We are going to an estate sale and then to Walgreens to pick up a prescription. Exciting times.

DH is feeling much better after getting some rest. He took a LONG nap yesterday. He's taking the weekend off from anything he had planned and just getting some needed R&R. He realizes he has to cut back especially at work. His PT job has almost become FT working some 10 hour days without even taking a break. His choice not the company. He hates taking a break when he gets started at anything. He's had afib for a number of years that's well controlled with meds. When he was first diagnosed he had to have his heart shocked several times but hasn’t since then so I think this was a wake up call for him that he almost had to have it again.
It was 27º going to work this morning. Still cold after work. It's sunny and suppose to be in the 50's this afternoon so I'm waiting to walk then. I started What Rose Forgot. It's keeping me interested so far.
Karen, they're saying chance of snow here too for Halloween...aaargh!
Anngie, I liked A Man Called Ove but I'm not sure I'd really want to read anything similar. I'll be curious to hear your review on it though so I might change my mind.
Robin, I find a lot of time trying to get something settled like what you're dealing with Verizon is threaten to go somewhere else. Then they seem more anxious to correct the problem.
Carol, I don't know why I didn't freeze my self rising flour since that's what I do with regular flour.
Pinky, are you hearing that S word too in your forecast?

Karen---you are such a good grandma, bet the kids love coming over. I too have been checking into WW this past week off and on and trying to be more accountable. Wish us luck!!!
Anngie--I will check into that book, I loved Ove. I have never but flour in the freezer so no thoughts from me on that.
Robin---so frustrating when these kind of things happen like with Verizon. I hate having to tell the same story to several different people and getting transferred to someone else. And then when they can barely speak English so you don't know what in the heck they are saying----don't get me started as it brings out the worst in me. My DH would do what Gareth suggested by threatening to cancel and go with someone else and he always gets good response after that. Glad you enjoyed your dinner with friends last night, always fun to be together. Is the friend that is divorced the one that was unhappy about not being invited to your DS's wedding? If so I'm glad she was there and decided to move on.
Carol---did you find some good buys at the estate sale?
Gareth---Glad your DH feels better today and realizes that he may need to slow down. SSSHHHHHHH on that s word. We had been hearing it in our forecast but have now heard the system may be moving more to the south of us more towards Sioux Falls and will miss us. Hopefully it will miss both of us!!!!
Although it is mostly sunny and 58 degrees it is windy and very cool feeling. Guessing it isn't to bad in the stadium in Brookings today for the big SDSU vs. NDSU game. I watched a lot of the ESPN game day on tv this morning as I did some cleaning. Amazed at all the people there. Fun to see!!! They guys are busy combining and as of yet I have not had to drive grain cart this season and I am so happy about that. With it being muddy out there I prefer not to be the person who gets stuck and slows things down.
I am enjoying The Oysterville book so far. Have a great weekend ladies!!

Pinky, funny you should ask that, it is a different friend, but I was just thinking about how the other one is probably going to be mad that we picked a day for lunch that she can only come if she takes the day off from work. She can only get together on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tuesdays really only for brunch because she has to be at work by noon, one of the women takes a class those days, I can't really do Tuesdays, one woman only has off on Fridays, which is good for everyone except her. So, we are going on Friday, Nov 9th. One of our friends, who wanted to organize this, is coming out from the city. I wouldn't have minded taking the day off and going somewhere special in the city, which we did a few times, but this is good too in case I want to be in the office at all that day. Good that the guys can be out doing their combining. I liked Oysterville too.

Good morning. A nice day predicted, sunny, and 54. Not so nice is 1" of snow expected overnight Monday night.
Anngie, I had not thought of asbestos either, my DH brought it up. Hopefully it is as what Robin said about it being in a house, if just in tiles, not too much of a thing then. Thank you, but we do what it is needed, without thinking, don't we? I did want to say to him, as the two of us were sitting at his lawyer's office, going thru all his will details, that this is what you get married for, to go thru better or worse, sickness and health, with your partner. But of course I did not say anything. HA!!!! I did not know you could freeze things such as flours!!! I will freeze my self rising flour this morning.
Robin, that is just awful, about Verizon! I do hope you to take this further, as I have a feeling they will just keep up with the billing error. Good luck. Thank you, about the asbestos, and mold. Also, thank you about the tip on the book, also, about The Giver of Stars, I put that on hold, looks like it will be a very long time before that one comes up. I love reading stories like that, that have to do with 20th century american history.
Carol, speaking of customer service, that is one of the reason's I picked the grocery store to go work part time at, a couple years ago. Their customer service is the best. Management even goes around the store, just listening and watching employees, to make sure they are interacting with "guests" the way the store wants them to. If a customer has a complaint about some food sold to him, the employee has the right to go beyond, and make sure the customer is satisfied, such as giving them some kind of replacement product for free. There are stores, businesses that do have great customer service, but it is few and far between, sadly. Amazing that I never heard of freezing flour.
Gareth, good to hear your DH is being smart about his health. That must have been a big scare for him! Poor guy. But it sounds like a good eye opener, as you say he was really overdoing. They are saying snow for during the night Monday, by Halloween rain and wind. So trick or treaters might not be able to go out.
Pinky, lol, thank you....we are all good grandmas. Those kids make it so easy. Funny thing is, we are used to the quiet, and when they are here, it is a nice noise, and then last night, while reading my kindle, I thought it was so quiet, it sounded weird! They sure are precious! Yes, good luck to us!!! After reading on FB about my cousin in law loosing 50# on one of our clinic here in town weight loss program (which has to do with cutting out carb, and a 4 step program), I am happy to get back to WW. I do not want to give up carb, and that is why WW is such a good program.
After going out to eat last night, with DD1 and her DH, I need WW more than ever! I did eat a decent meal, and did not clean my plate, but dessert!! A chocolate mousse cheese cake was waiting for me, and I ate the whole thing! I am still full!! So today starts the payback. With getting that new indoor grill, I now have a new way to make veggies. Will need to go grocery shopping, after googling some recipes.
Will take a walk today, with the weather being pretty nice. I took a walk yesterday, but did not get far, as I had forgotten to do my inhalers first. Then back to the Y tomorrow. So happy that our calendar is a bit more open, now that DB is done with radiation, and a lot of those doctor appts.
Have a nice Sunday everyone.

Sunny, cool morning. Forecast is for another nice day today and then the bottom falls out with accumulating snow in the forecast along with cold temps. I'm so not looking forward to it. Last day for awhile for walking outdoors. Need to clean our rock garden out today too for the season. Trying out a new recipe for split pea soup today that I hope DH likes since he's not a split pea soup lover like I am. This recipe also has lima beans and barley so sounds interesting. A couple of friends have made it and raved about how good it is. I'll make grilled cheese sandwiches to go with it so at least that'll make DH happy.
Karen, sounds like your weather is going to be similar to ours. I always said about our DGC when they were little I was glad to see them come and glad to see them go! I'd say to DH after they left "hear that? quiet!"

We are going to have rain most of the day today, but we are definitely not seeing snow in our forecast. I think we will be in the high 50's and low 60's for a while yet. Although the leaves on a few trees have changed, Most have not yet. It just hasn't been cold enough. I have to go out to do a few errands, so will have to suffer through going in the rain, which I hate, especially because I want to go to Trader Joe's. DH likes engraved business cards. I have to drop the plate of at a stationery store that is next door to TJ's.
Karen, I guess this is why we need WW, we can't resist things like that cheesecake, sound delicious. I have heard there has been snow up your way, hope it doesn't end up being too bad.
Gareth, I would love to have your pea soup today, rainy days need soup.
DH for some reason when he was away at this conference decided he really missed me. He has been going to conferences for years, and although I have started to go to some of them with him more recently, most of the ones he goes to are without me. Although I was happy to have the time to myself, I guess he was not.

Robin, there used to be a woman in my friend group who expected us to plan things around when she could go. She even got mad if we would do things when she was on vacation. I mean, really, she didn't want us to go to a craft show because she was at Disney World. On the other hand, she didn't think about other's schedules when planning something-it was all about her. She moved away, but while back in Texas is not real close. She still has relatives here but either doesn't visit them or doesn't let anyone know when she is here. She was a frustrating friend.
We've had no rain since Friday. Yesterday and today have been beautiful and in the 70s. Starting tomorrow night it is supposed to get much cooler.
Good customer service makes such a difference to where customers go. It looks like stores and businesses would get that. Also, doctor's offices. I have had several bad experiences with doctor's offices with appointment mix-ups and such.
We went out for Mexican food after church. It was very good. The people at another table got dessert and it looked so good, but we resisted.
To me, one of the best thing about Weight Watchers is not having to give up some food completely.

Our snow flurries have ended and it didn't amount to anything--thank the lord. The side walk was just barely wet from it melting and little bit of white sits on our pine trees on the north side. We lucked out from the snow as the cold front came through here and left us with only 32 degrees at 3:30 in the afternoon---BBBRRRRRR!!!!! suppose to get down to 23 degrees tonight. I just gave DH a ride to a semi and I about froze. Suppose to only be in the 30's all week with it creeping higher each day and by Sat. and Sun of next weekend in the low 40's. Please let us have the 60's back. I guess if the colder weather keeps the moisture away we better take it as time is ticking away. The guys were in the field until 4 a.m. this morning combining in anticipation of the snow today. They all came home and slept in and then off to church with another quick nap after for DH anyway. Now that it has cleared off it looks like they will start combining again with an earlier quit tonight as the forecast for us looks cloudy but dry for the coming week.
We had potluck in our church today as it is pastor appreciation day today so we honored him and his wife this way and also with a card from the congregation along with some gift cards and monetary gifts as people wish to do. The pastor we have is just a wonderful down to earth guy and has a lovely family. Hope we can keep him for a long time.
No personals I guess as I am being called for another ride to move combine, tractor and trucks to another field---talk tomorrow!!!

Carol, we call those high maintenance friends, and sometimes they are just not worth it. The problem with this friend of mine is that we really don't want to tell her what's really going on, because I am sure she doesn't think it should affect our friendship, but part of it is couples friends, and she should be happy the women get together with her. Her current boyfriend is one who she knew from before she split up, and was a big reason for the split. I gave her the benefit of the doubt that it was a platonic friendship then, however it seems that her ex thinks it was more. Most of the husbands side with him in this, and don't want to have that much to do with her. I think the fact that her new guy doesn't really fit in, and he coincidentally met his new wife online, but she lives in our community, even though he did not, makes a big difference. One of her DD's was best friends with someone who not only did my kids go to camp with, but my older DS was her DB's roommate all through college. So, she just fit in so perfectly.
I'll bet you get great Mexican food where you live. My DH doesn't particularly like Mexican, so not anything we really go out for.
Pinky, I was wondering how they were getting the farming done in such cold weather, but I guess they are getting it done
