Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Wow, this is going to be a very long winter! The snow from yesterday did melt, with more coming tomorrow, but the temps are staying down, for highs in the 30's or if we are lucky, the 40's. It is hard to believe this is just the end of October.
Marsha I too have noticed certain things made in the crock is more watery. Chili does sound very good, what with our chili temps. I take it bearpaws are a certain type of boot?
Gareth, good luck to your DGD today. Also, good luck to your DH on his stress test. We are seeing appointments with specialists here are being scheduled way out, very hard to get in when we would like, like within a few weeks. When I went to PC doc complaining of short of breath, she sent me to lung doc, but had to wait 2 months, now my DH is waiting to see one, with it scheduled in January.
Anngie, we are really liking our grill, yesterday we grilled boneless pork loins, and veggies. I wish I could post a picture of it on here. It is the Power Indoor Grill. There are 2 sizes, we got the smaller of the 2. Perfect size for us. It comes with a grill plate, and a griddle plate. Very nice. About emphysema, which of course I have, is you can never get rid of it, but I was told, by a doctor that it is normally caused by smoking, and quitting smoking will halt the progression of it. Has she noticed any change in breathing? When I was diagnosed with that, I had not noticed. The doctor dropped that on me and walked out, and it really upset me....I started crying. He came back in, and was surprised I was acting like that. He said I should be fine, as I did not smoke anymore. This was back in 2005. Good luck to your sister, waiting is going to be the hardest part!
Robin, yes I do roast veggies, every so often. I usually get away from doing that, in the summer, with the oven heating up the living room, since we have an open concept apartment. The grill will be great for doing that now. I could see you being a doctor! I think a lot of us women our age did miss our calling....of some sort. I got my 2nd shingles shot last month, and had no reaction.
Pinky, you guys are colder than us!! Yikes!!! You too will have a very long winter, if we don't get a break with some warmer weather, maybe in November. After this weekend, your day of getting things done, and then it getting dark fast, will be a lot faster, with the time change! I hate it getting dark so darn early. They had a farmer on the local news yesterday, talking about soy beans and how hard it is to harvest it, when the fields are wet, or have snow on them. The farmers here are really suffering. At least the farmer that owns all the corn crops surrounding us is slowly getting his done. He has a long way to go, but has a good start.
Am reading The Matchmaker, by Elin Hilderbrand. I am liking it a lot, at least it is keeping me interested. Of course I like most of her books.
Going to the Y this morning, then we need to run to Fleet Farm, looking for a couple small tables to put our fans on, in our rooms. I can't believe how warm this apartment is. With the prediction that the low last night could be in the 20's, I turned the heat on to 60. It was nice when I got up, but I know it will warm up during the day. So the furnace is finally on.
Have a nice day everyone.

With it staying dark later in the morning I have trouble getting going. Just finished walking. It'll be awhile maybe not until Spring that I can walk outdoors again. My hands already are getting so dry and chapped from the cold. Gotta keep lotioning them up good.
My back has been killing me since Sunday when we cleaned the rock garden out. Too much bending. I took some acetaminophen but it hasn’t helped. Wish I could take ibuprofen. I’ll just have to tough it out for a few days. It was fun yesterday morning putting the sheets back on the bed. It isn’t too bad if I’m standing or sitting. It’s when I bend over or when I first sit down or get up.
Now DH is catching a cold. Hope it stays a cold and doesn’t turn into bronchitis like so often happens with him. Hope too he doesn’t share with me.
Karen, most of our snow yesterday has melted too. More coming tonight into tomorrow.
Robin, I started Ask Again, Yes and got into it right away. Glad you recommended it. I needed a good book after the last two.
Anngie, sorry about your sister.
Pinky, hope the harvesting is coming along and can be finished soon.
Hi Carol and Marsha!

I think my mother still has not gotten over the fact that I did not go to law or med school. At the same time her goal for me was of course husband who would provide and children. Not sure how I was going to do both of those things so of course I did neither haha. I did start my MBA but I was going at night and after starting it twice and moving yet again I said no more. Now it is my unfinished symphony and I regret not getting it done.
Karen - bearpaws are like Uggs but much less expensive. DD complained again last night about her cold ankles so I am glad I sent them.
Gareth - gentle stretches have been the best treatment when I have overdone it with my back. Slow and easy. And ice.
I came up with a new idea for a costume for ds and gf's party - I went into ds' closet to see if we still had his old scream costume (which I had already checked and I knew I'd gotten rid of it) and I found his scrubs from when he worked in the lab at the orthodontist. They are black but they are scrubs. I'll see if I can get into them and if so I may shorten them and wear them and go as a - what? Who wears black scrubs?

It is cold and raining here. It is only 41 now and should get down into the 30s tonight. It was hard to get up this morning. I wanted to stay in my warm bed. Tomorrow will be cold, too, but no rain. That's good for the trick-or-treaters-the no rain part. I used to hate it when it was cold on Halloween because my mom would make me wear a coat over my costume.
Karen, it sounds like your DB is doing well. It was nice of him to take you to lunch.
Anngie, hope your sister is doing better.
Robin, about going to med school. When I was in college, one woman had great grades and did well on the medical school entrance exam, but when she was interviewed they asked her if was planning to have children, etc. I think that would be illegal now. A woman from high school is now a doctor but she put off med school for about 10 or so years after college. Things were different then.
Gareth, sorry about your back. Have you done any of the stretches and exercises for it? Sorry you can't take ibuprofen. It always helps me better than tylenol.
I need to go bake some brownies for the Halloween thing at church tomorrow night.

Marsha, I am pretty sure you are quite a number of years younger than me, so in that generation when women were starting to think about careers, and more were doing it. You are right, I am not sure who wears black scrubs, maybe a mortician?
Karen, I know you are only on the second floor, but it is amazing how hotter the higher floor can get. Imagine the high rises in Manhattan. My older DS is on the 20th floor, my younger one not quite that high, but also up there. They keep their window open usually in the winter it gets so hot. He does have a great view though.
Carol, I know a bunch of people who went back to law school way after they graduated, and 2 women from my high school class who did become doctors. One of those was not even a really top student, but her father was a doctor. The other was tied with me in class rank. Why I remember that now, I have no idea. Same with why I remember my SAT scores.
Gareth, I often have back problems. I know most people don't believe in this, but I find that a heating pad is very helpful. Also, a hot bath. It is worth a try. Glad you like Ask Again Yes. It grabbed me from the beginning too. Sending good vibes for your DGD.
Our burglar alarm repair guy came this morning, we had a motion detector that was going off for no reason, so he changed it. Then I met some junk people I hired to clean out the rest of DM's house, not the staged furniture of course. Someone is coming for that. So, that's all done and we are pretty much set to close next Tuesday. Then to the office. Nothing tonight other than trying to finish The Giver of Stars. I am really enjoying it.

My regret school wise is not getting a master's in library science. We live close to 2 universities who offer it and I should have worked on it before we had kids. I'm not sure why I didn't. Probably scared of trying to work and go to school.
I think heat helps when I have back pain. I love to soak in a hot bath.

My first apartment in Chicago was a studio with one window facing an enclosed - it wasn't a courtyard, not sure what was down there. It was so hot because there was no cross breeze, no air came in. I think I was on the 3rd floor of a 4 story building. Terrible building. Stayed only 1 year.

Hi Friends--I did get on here a bit earlier today. Harvest is moving right along and I think I mentioned last night we did finish our soybeans so that is good news. Have a long ways to go on corn however. Only 29 degrees right now which at 2 in the afternoon is not very warm. Tomorrow it will be a heat wave as we may get up to 38 degrees---LOL!!! As long as it stays dry at this point that is what matters most. Karen---wow on your Dr. being so insensitive to your emphysema diagnosis. Even if he/she hadn't been very sensitive you would think they would have asked if you had any questions. Bet you are loving the low expense for heating your apartment. Gareth---my hands get very dry as well and when they crack it hurts so bad. Dang on hurting your back----hope it feels better soon as well as your DH feeling better soon. Why can't you take Ibuprofen if you don't mind my asking?? Marsha----HHHMMMMMMM, black scrubs----get a broom and fly off to your bewitching job at the lab? ?? Just a thought. Or maybe working in a lab with vampire teeth and getting the blood-----I don't know I am not good at costume ideas. Carol---I will be right over to taste test those brownies. Yummy!!! Your weather seems quite cool for Texas, right??? Robin---I bet you are so ready to be done with the sale of your DM's house. Anngie---hope all is going well for your sister, thinking of you!!!

Karen, How great it is that your apartment is so nice and warm! And you don’t even have to turn your furnace up as much. Is the heat included in the rent? My DS noticed when she walked the dog up a (small) hill she would be a little out of breath, that was all. And, the way she found out was she stopped at a health fair where they were giving free tests - cholesterol, breathing, etc. When the results came back she was told she might have fluid near her lung and to have it checked. The next test determined it was the beginning of emphysema in one lung. She’s 61.
Gareth, your poor DH - and I hope you don’t get it! I know what you mean about acetaminophen as it does little for me too.
Marsha, wow - who DOES wear black scrubs! A mortician!? Or, you could go as an orthodontist!
Robin, I’ll bet you can’t wait until the closing! It’ll be nice for you and your siblings when everything is finalized. How is DDIL feeling?
Carol, did you start your masters? If you did, you could check into what it would take to finish! Why not? My DDIL’s mother got her BA two years ago at 70!
Pinky, harvesting will be done before you know it! I’ll bet you can’t wait for that! And then of course, along with all the cattle - does your DH have time to sleep?! The temp here tomorrow is supposed to be 68 degrees with no snow in sight.
I guess my school regret is not going into nursing. I would have liked to have gotten a BS and then MS in nursing administration. Next time around! haha

I'm brainstorming here - I like the idea of the lab - maybe I can fill a couple of test tubes with "blood" and say I'm an underworld lab tech....
