Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Cold! 26 degrees here.
Pinky you win the prize for coldest yesterday!! Yay Pinky!! Lol. DH has been coping with all of this pretty good. He has his lows, then he sleeps a lot. Otherwise he is doing pretty good, was able to have the solution. Only 3 more to go. How was your day yesterday, with being a ranch hand? Exhausting?
Marsha, I worked on bills yesterday afternoon, and again I thought to myself, when will I learn I can not do that when DH is around? Grrr!!! He is so distracting, especially as I am working out a new budget for us to follow. The money has been flowing out of here like water after a flood. As with getting back into the WW program, I have get our money back on the program! We pay AARP for 2 years, as it is cheaper, and I think AAA is due around February. Sometimes I wonder why we have AARP, as I always forget to use it for discounts.
Gareth...6"! Oh, I feel so sorry for those people!!! That is depressing!!! We too had a lot of accidents yesterday morning, as the snow was falling during morning rush hour. That first snow fall, people just don't remember how to drive. The other days snow fall was minimal, and did not disrupt the rush hour. Good news about your DGD, if it is just caffeine overload. How is she doing on cutting back? I too have lower back issues, have had the shots for the pain. Over the years it is just a pain that I can live with, compared to the other aches and pains I have. Hope yours has settled down, finally.
Carol, my DD2 posted pics on FB last night of them taking the kids around the neighborhood; there is a church at the end of their side street that did trunk or treat. The kids ended up having hot chocolate (how appropriate!) and hot dogs. The kids loved it! That is so neat. It is so sad that there are doctors out there like that. Good thing your friend got a second opinion. Thank you and yes, all went well with DH yesterday.
Anngie, I would give anything to have 72! I just can't imagine........ DH procedure for his bladder is quick. They do a urine test to make sure he does not have an infection, then do the procedure. He is in there for maybe 30 minutes tops. It takes the place of chemo, which is a very nice alternative to have. Too bad we can't have that for other chemo treatments. He does get pain in his kidney when they do the procedure, but it goes away. Good luck to your sister, in January. The inhaler she has is probably a rescue inhaler. I have one of those, plus the symbicort inhaler.
Robin, did loosing power delay you from getting ready for work? I am so glad we do not have to worry about trick or treaters! We have not done it for years, as with living out of town all those years, we never got any. For awhile I would buy a big bag just in case, but kids did not come, and sure enough we would end up eating the candy. So I quit buying.
I finished The Matchmaker last night. I really liked it. Was a tad surprised by the ending. Now I have to find something to read.
We were out and about yesterday, after DH appointment, and it was pretty neat seeing employees all over dressed up in costumes.
Today is All Saint's Day. When we went to Catholic grade school, all those years ago, the Catholic schools would have off today. Us kids loved it, as then we could stay up late on Halloween, and sit with our candy, and trade with my brothers, the different candies we liked or didn't like.
Have a nice day everyone.

Good Morning--a dreary day here although it did warm up to 40 yesterday and only went down to 32 in the night so not quite so cold. Of course with the warm up it is dreary and out of no where they are now saying we may have some flurries or light rain this evening-----what the heck, where did that come from. Back to cold again for the next week and the weather guys are telling us the first half of November is going to be colder than normal. What does that mean for the last half I wonder? Actually maybe it is good that it is cold as that way we can continue to harvest without moisture. Karen---glad that went well for your DH yesterday and sounds like a much easier process than chemo. Yes I was tired last night and expecting I may have to go out again this afternoon for awhile as one of our college boys that can come usually for a full day on Fridays has a test to take. Robin---I think you asked about the cold and harvesting corn. The cold really does not hurt it at all and usually helps dry down the corn which is a good thing. I will explain that in another post if think of it and if you are interested in knowing but I just got a call I need to give a couple of rides to the guys so gotta go. Just one other quick note I finished The Oysterville Sewing Circle and really enjoyed it, I will give it a 4 - 4.5. I started The Last Mrs. Parrish yesterday and really liking that as well. Can't believe I have listened toso many books in the last 6 weeks. They have really kept my interest and it seems like I have been on the road more and by myself a lot more in the evenings so I listen much more that way. Hope to BBL!

Re AARP - the first year we had it we saved so much on a discount for our glasses I think it will cover us for the rest of our lives. But since then I don't think I've used the discounts at all. We use the AAA discounts at hotels and they are the same as AARP. Maybe I should drop it. I didn't pay it. I did pay the AAA bill which was good because it expired today.
Gareth - good news on dgd. Young people don't realize the impact caffeine has on their systems. I always limited my kids but dd insists that caffeine doesn't keep her up at night. I think she is wrong, it certainly doesn't help with those insane circadian rhythms they have at that age.
Karen - glad dh's procedure went well yesterday and it's not too terribly uncomfortable for him.
Pinky -I am worried this is going to be a very long and miserable winter.
I was very happy to not have little kids to take trick or treating last night as it was too cold! WE had more than we expected and almost ran out of candy - probably because I started out handing them 2 pieces instead of one until dh stopped me. We actually got into his "favorites" which I'm sure did not make him happy but if he wants it so badly he can go out today and buy more on sale.
I finished The Bookwoman.... and liked it very much. Next up is Hum If You Don't Know The Words.
I am making apple pie and probably ginger cookies to take to ds and gf's party. I made the pie dough this morning so tonight I'll finish up the pie and make the cookies. They will have plenty of deserts. No vegan foods though so I will have to eat lunch before I go. I wonder if they will ever figure that out.

Ahhhh...finally time for a break! laundry is folded, hung, ironed and all put away. How long will the hamper stay empty?😜! I've walked and also cleaned some downstairs too. I was surprised to hear that we set a record for the snowiest halloween on record. 1/2" really?!
Karen, there's no cutting back on caffeine for DGD. It's no caffeine which hasn't been a problem since she's feeling so much better without it. I know it's been no problem for me not having caffeine after giving it up years ago. I HATE the feeling now if I've ever accidentally have caffeine. Sometimes even asking for decaf coffee eating out I've gotten regular. With DH's afib he can't have caffeine either. I'll have to look up The Matchmaker since you liked it.
Robin, I'm enjoying Ask Again, Yes so much that I've got to check out what else this author has written. It's been a nice change from all the thrillers I usually read. I really like a book like this too that just has a good story to it.
Pinky, the weather guys here are telling us the same thing that the first half of November is going to be colder than normal....sigh. I have the noon news on now and someplace here in the state overnight broke a record low with 13º That's one of the places that had 6" of snow yesterday.
Marsha, I'm drooling at the thought of a piece of your warm apple pie!
Anngie, I'm so jealous of your 70's temps!
Carol, unusual even cold temps there for you too.

We are having a quiet afternoon, as the day after DH treatment is usually when it hits him with extreme fatigue. He did some running this morning, and dragged his butt home, forgetting that it hits like that. Sound asleep in his chair now, covered with a blanket. I went to the Y this morning, got in 1 mile on the treadmill then took a gentle yoga class. My first time for that, and liked it.
Pinky, we are looking at colder than normal temps here too for awhile. Of course watching the national news about the fires in CA sure makes me shut my mouth about our temps, I can't imagine it being so dry that even traffic accidents start wild fires! Hope all you are needed for today is the couple of rides.
Marsha, we had to take out the membership for AARP because of my medicare supplement. They get you one way or another! And yes, with our AAA membership, each of them are the same, discount wise. When we go to Minocqua, the room discount is the same for either one. Lol, you and your DH sound exactly like what we used to go thru back in the day, when we lived in town and had trick or treaters! DH always wanted to keep certain candy. I sure could not survive being a vegan around this state!!! I don't know how you do it!! I remember when my sister in law was having a lot of stomach issues, and was on a strict diet, we had a garage party one time and she brought all her own food, as she could not eat the "normal" cookout, party food. That must be a hassle if you have to do that every time you go somewhere.
Gareth, I have a load of wash in the dryer, and I know exactly how long the basket will stay empty...till bedtime! Lol, I know DH will put something in there! I agree about no caffeine, I have really knocked us down, with doing 50/50 caffeine coffee, because of my acid reflux acting up. I would like to eventually ease us into decaf. When we go out for breakfast or lunch now, I do not even order coffee, just ice water. About the snow, they said here that for the month of October, we had the 2nd most snow on record. Woohoo!!! Isn't that wonderful?
Hi to Carol, Robin, and Anngie!!
Any plans for the weekend? So far our weekend looks quiet, with me most likely running to the Y tomorrow morning.
We are going to use our air fryer tonight for the first time. Making french fries, a recipe that came with the fryer, for homemade fries. Then a hamburger on the indoor grill. My whole day is all tracked on my WW app., even a glass of wine!

Karen, I'm glad your DH's procedure went well. You sound very organized with tracking everything.
Our trunk and treat went really well. It is cold, down in the 30s so only the trick or treating was outside. We had plenty of hot chocolate offered to the people while outside. The food and games were inside. We had plenty of everything, in fact at the end we were giving away the leftover cookies, etc. left from the cakewalk. One thing I think was really great was a lot of the helpers were older people even older DH and I. Like us, too, they didn't have any grandkids participating, just came to help so the parents could be with their kids. When my kids were young, I remember being discouraged because it seemed the younger adults were the ones doing the work. I'm glad it has changed.
We are members of both AAA and AARP. We haven't had AAA very long so I don't think we have used it much. I'm more apt to remember AARP. One thing I don't like about AARP is the ton of mail we get, especially about Medicare insurance. I know it's important, but we're happy with what we have and I feel like it's just a big waste of paper and money.
When DH was still drinking coffee, I think he could go to sleep right after drinking it. It affects me for hours.

Well, the 70’s are over! lol. It’s 40 degrees and extremely windy. The wind was unbelievable during the night with 50mph gusts.
Karen, so glad DH & DB’s treatments went well and are over for this week! My 10 yr. old great nephew is being raised a vegan, and yes, his father and grandparents always bring his special food to Thanksgiving and/or Christmas dinner. It’s brought cold and heated up just before we sit down to eat.
Pinky, I put Oysterville on my list. I’ll be glad to hear when your harvest is over - good thing the cold doesn’t interfere.
Marsha, maybe I’ll just stick with AAA. I too often forget to check their various discounts - should try harder to remember this. We had 75 kids for trick or treating.
Gareth, I remember not drinking coffee three days before a mammogram and had what was probably the worst headache I’ve ever had! So if a time comes when I need to stop completely, I’ll start a month earlier!
Carol, as I mentioned above, we had 75 kids come and I’ll bet almost everyone of them said thank you. I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe things are changing - one thank you at a time.
Yesterday I returned a book having only read 50 pages! I so seldom do that - I at least read 100 pages before I decide. Now I’m reading Olive, Again. I’m only on page 30 but I really like it so far.

I gave up caffeine when I was trying to get pregnant with ds. I remember getting coffee at the drive through once and it was regular coffee and I felt it right away. Now sometimes I have regular, like at the airport Starbucks they don't have decaf or if I stop at kwik trip I get 1/2 and 1/2. But at home it's all decaf.
You have to be careful with AARP renewals. They send you renewals when your renewal is not due, then they take that money and use it as a donation and don't apply it to the membership. I called them once about it and that's what they said to me. So if you have AARP and renew check for your expiration before renewing. I just had a discussion with ds about AAA last night. He pays his share of our AAA and I asked if he still wants in, he initially said no he didn't need it then asked what they do. I told him flat tires, run out of gas, tow your car, and he ended up deciding his share ($50) was worth that. On the other hand, my boss and I happened to discuss it today in the context of him leaving his son a car at college which will sit in the lot for 3 weeks before he drives it and have I used one of those portable battery starter things so I said just call AAA, and he said he doesn't have it because if you don't use it for 4 or 5 years it's cheaper to go without. Which made me reflect on how much money I've spent on it over the years and do I really get value for it? I like the peace of mind of being able to call them if something happens when I am not home.

One of the worst migraines I've ever had was when we visited the ILs and they had switched to decaf everything-tea, coffee, soft drinks and didn't tell us. They had awful water anyway so I couldn't notice the difference in taste. By the beginning of the third day I had a really bad headache. MIL said she had never heard of a caffeine withdrawal headache which I found hard to believe, but anyway. My doctor said never go off caffeine cold turkey. I reminded him I did it accidentally and I knew better. That is why when I have a colonoscopy or other procedure where I can't have anything to drink, I try to schedule it early in the morning and Starbucks or Panera is our first stop on our way home.
Yes, we noticed that many of the children were very polite.

Karen, funny you are asking about the power outage. It didn't hold us up yesterday. But, last night at around 1:30 am the power went out again. DH uses a CPAP. so there went that. I woke up about 2, and realized it was off, then didn't fall back to sleep well, was up again at 4 and went down to my phone to text the power company, and fell back to a restless sleep where i had the weirdest dream. We woke up around 8:00 finally, I told DH we should go out for breakfast, which of course he complained about but by the time I was back in with the dog he was dressed and ready to go. So, for the AARP discount, most of the time they give it to you anyway, like at IHOP where it is really a 55+ menu. I can never get over how much prices on everything have increased, but it is $1.70 less than the same thing on their regular menu. We then went into the office, that did have power. Our burglar alarm has battery back-up, so texts me when the power goes back on, or off. It went on at 1:45. Funny thing is that the electric company was still sending me emails that it will be restored at 6 am.
Pinky, I am always happy for you to fill me in on farming, just such a different world to me.
Gareth, I didn't even think of checking out that author's books, good idea.
Marsha, I have used AAA when I have needed a battery jump, which I don't need on my Prius, but our other cars, or a tire change. My car also now doesn't have a spare tire, so when it has gone flat DH jacked it up, I took the tire over to see if it could be repaired, then he put it back on. I used to use it for guide books, but they don't have the same kind of thing any more.
With AARP, DH likes to have it so we get the magazine and newspaper so he knows what his clients are reading about. We first got it when my older DS was going to college, and Embassy Suites had a much better deal with AARP than we could get from AAA. Usually I find the discount is the same. I think AAA is expensive for what we are getting these days, but they come much faster than any of the other roadside assistance people from our car insurance or the car manufacturer.
Carol, one of the ingredients in Excedrine Migraine is caffeine.
It's been another crazy and tiring day, when we didn't get finished what we wanted to. I wanted to work with the new secretary about how to make up a binder for client documents, but we got sidetracked having to print up new documents for someone, which she did, but then when it was being proofed we realized the page numbers didn't print out. So frustrating.
Karen, glad that your DH is taking things well, by the way. I have been so busy lately that I often skim the posts a bit, and I did not realize that he was having the procedure. Hope all is as well as can be.
