Day 3 – Eat Sitting Down
Today’s assignment is to learn to always eat sitting down, no standing and eating allowed. When we don’t sit down and eat we are less conscious of everything we put into our mouths (who keeps track of the samples at Costco), when we sit we can do a better job of monitoring what we eat instead of mindlessly munching/grazing as we walk about the office or our kitchen. Beck points out you’ll feel more satisfied if you have all the food in front of you and you see what you are eating.
Do you think eating sitting down will make a difference in your consumption of food? Do you usually sit down to eat, or do you still stand and eat sometimes?

I eat sitting down most of the time. I sometimes eat my salad in the kitchen while cooking the rest of dinner. I started to eat my late afternoon snack standing in the kitchen, reasoning that it wasn't worth the bother to go into the dining room for such a small snack. Ate it slowly and mindfully but I've eliminated the snack due to portion creep. I do think eating sitting down makes a difference. You pay more attention to your eating and increase your awareness that you have eaten.

reasoning that it wasn't worth the bother to go into the dining room for such a small snack Is that one of those sabotaging thoughts we hear so much about? In my case, if I'm eating it standing up at the sink, it is probably something that I shouldn't be eating the the first place. Like a spoonful of premium ice cream straight out of the carton. The only food I can really justify standing up at the sink is a totally ripe peach that is dripping down my chin. Work in progress. No more premium ice cream at the sink. Get the Halo Top, put it in a bowl, and sit down and savor it. Then count the 3 points and go do something else.

I think sitting down definitely makes a difference. Also, seeing it all in front of me. When I snack all day it seems like I haven't eaten anything because I never see it all together. So I'm trying to make sure I layout the meal first, so I can become visually satisfied.
I definitely still struggle with this when it comes to snacking. I never stand to eat a meal.

I think eating only while sitting helps me to realize that whatever portion I'm having will appear to be smaller if I nibble before sitting. That tempts me to justify the notion of getting a second helping.
Lately, I've been eating my fruit while standing so it looks like I need to reel that in before it spreads to other parts of my meal.

Mostly doing this, yeah! I'm doing something I'm supposed to be doing!
