Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning. Rain overnight, possibly more today, at least it is not snow. We will get that on Wedn.
Robin, what happens to all those houses that, after Sandy, ran out of money to fix the damage? What a nightmare that must be for those home owners. How nice to run into DS and DDIL, right next door to where you were! I have not read The Language of Flowers, will look it up, thank you.
Anngie, I see Tofu at the stores and wonder about about eating that. It sounds like he is fully used to eating that way, as to asking if it is vegan. I know my DD2 has their 2 children eating more aware of what they eat. They come over here and question the food I make, which I really like. I think it is great that they want to know exactly what they are eating, and want to eat healthy. Now my DD1, with her 2 kids is a whole different story!
HI to Carol, Pinky, and Marsha. Hope you all had a great weekend.
Watched part of the Packer game yesterday. I refuse to watch them when they decide not to show up to the game, why waste my time watching that? No thanks. Watched the Nascar race, and the driver I root for won!! In 2 weeks Nascar will be done for the season, so I won't have that to fall back on to watch on Sunday afternoons.
Y this morning, going to go to the gentle Yoga again, after the treadmill. Then running with DH afterwards.
Finished A Place We Knew Well last night. It was a very good book, in my opinion. Started Honeymoon in Italy, by Jen Carter.
They just said on the news that 2 of the wildfires out in CA are now out, yay! There are still 2 other fires raging, with them being 70% out.
Has anyone started Christmas shopping? Me...not yet. Time is flying!!
Have a nice day everyone.

Karen, how are your knees doing? You haven't said anything in awhile about them. Hope that means all's well with them and if any pain it's minimal. I ate or should say spit out the first bite of tofu I tried years ago. Never again! I know a lot of people eat it and must like it but nothing I'll ever eat again. Like I've said several times I'm really enjoying Ask Again, Yes so would recommend it. One of the better books I've read in awhile. I do very little Christmas shopping since we give money to DS and family. I do like though to have a gift for them to unwrap too. I'm already wracking my brain on what though. DGC were so easy to buy for when they were young. DH and I don't exchange gifts. The only other gifts I need to buy are for a few coworkers that we exchange gifts with each other. Already wracking my brain on that one too.
Even with an extra hour of weekend I guess I must've blinked and missed it! Gotta get ready to start another work week.

We are having pretty mild weather here. It was basically a nice weekend other than a little cool but not cold either. We did get a few sprinkles last night and they are saying some snow flurries again tomorrow but won't amount to anything. We are so thankful as harvest is moving right along. We were busy with that all weekend. The dryer is full again so the guys are planning to gather up some of the cow/calf pairs and bring them home today. It is time for the calves to be weaned from their mothers and get them all closer to home but kind of a pain with harvest still going on as they have to unhook the semi truck from the trailer and hook them up to trailers that haul cattle.
Karen--I will check into those books, thanks for the suggestions. I thought of you yesterday when I seen the Packers were on CBS. I keep forgetting to ask you why you won't watch night football games?
It is our 41st anniversary today . Hard to believe that many years and yet in some ways it seems like forever. We normally would go out to eat tonight but DH hasn't said what he is thinking and I will not press him at this point as farming is top priority at this time of the season.... I hope my post isn't to messy but I am having a lot of trouble posting as it is taking forever for the words I just typed to show up. Not sure if it is the site or my computer.

Robin, good you are almost through selling your mom's house. That is just crazy about the post office and your mom. Can you take a copy of the death certificate and show them? We had MIL's mail forwarded to us for about a year and a half before she died. I can't remember if DH went to the PO. I know I sent some things back and asked them to remove her from their mailing list, then after a couple of years I wrote "deceased" on the envelopes and put them in the mailbox. I don't know if they were really sent back or if the PO just tossed them.
I don't read science fiction or fantasy much. I did read Twilight and didn't think much of it. Of course, I did read all seven Harry Potter because I was working in the library and felt like I needed to be able to have conversation about them with the kids. I do like mysteries. I also read non-fiction and I like biographies. I forgot-I don't read much Christian fiction because some of the characters are so unbelievably good. I just finished The Overdue Life of Amy Byler about a school librarian whose husband comes back after 3 years and how she gets to go to New York and gets a makeover which of course, makes her attractive to every man she meets. It is a print version of a Hallmark movie with a little bit of a Lifetime movie thrown in near the end.
DH started feeling sick Saturday afternoon. He spent the rest of the weekend on the couch surrounded by kleenex and drinking hot tea. He is feeling better and went on to work. He doesn't push himself like he used to, going to work no matter what. He has also gotten better as a patient. He doesn't expect me to wait on him.
I went to church Sunday morning and then helped with a wedding shower. It is warm here and beautiful, no clouds and not real windy.
Pinky, happy anniversary!

I just read an article about taking social security at 62 instead of waiting but investing it and doing better that way rather than waiting for 66-1/2 or 70. I sent the article to dh to look at. He isn’t working so there would be no conflict of him having to pay back any social security, might be a good idea for us and then I’d wait as long as possible to collect mine.
I think we like to have the AAA peace of mind because we drive older cars. We actually have the expanded version which will tow 100 miles because if someone is not near home and breaks down we would like to be able to get the car back to our trusted garage.
RE the vegan nephew – my guess is that if he lasts that long, once he is in high school he will eat whatever he wants when he is not at home. That’s what my kids did with keeping kosher. Maybe he will never develop a taste for meat.
Karen – I like tofu when someone else prepares it. Noodles has it as a protein option and I always order it with Japanese Pan Noodles and it is wonderful, but I’ve never been able to prepare it at home so it is even remotely palatable. I skipped out on the last quarter of the Packer game yesterday too. DH watched it to the end, which is actually a reversal of what usually happens in our house. I had Mitzi in her bandana but I suppose that was not enough “luck” and I should have put her in her jersey too.
Pinky – what time of year do you take your cattle to market? Happy Anniversary! You must have married very young!!
Here are some titles that (I think) I found when none of my holds came in: The Museum of Extraordinary Things Girl in the Blue Coat Stones From the River Future Home of the Living God The Gilded Hour I don't remember what they were about but they are titles on my kindle ap that I'm pretty sure I read, did not abandon.

Another dreary day in the NE! Snow flurries on Thursday!
Karen, tofu has to be an “acquired taste”. To me, it has the texture and taste of a sponge. My DSIL (his grandmother) would cook it in garlic and oil and then toss it in vegan noodles. To my knowledge, he has never tasted meat or dairy items unless the dairy item happened to be in something that he ate unaware. She found this summer vegan hotdogs which she says are quite good. All in all, IMHO, to be a vegan is an adult choice and should not be forced on a child.
On the news yesterday, they were interviewing home owners out near the wildfires in CA. Apparently house/property insurance has skyrocketed in recent years - if you can even get it. One homeowner now pays just under $19,000 a year when it used to be $3,800!
Gareth, would co-workers like Amazon gift cards?
Marsha, taking SS at 62 is what I did and never looked back! Just make sure you have a good financial advisor and do what he suggests. IMHO
Pinky, Happy Anniversary!
Carol, one time I asked our postmaster about forwarding on mail - especially junk or anything that’s not first class - it’s tossed.
Speaking of junk mail - when you receive unsolicited pads of paper, greeting cards or return labels, do you keep them, toss them or return them?

Anngie, I did not see that post about vegan yesterday. My nephew is vegan, and my BFF from college's son is vegan, as is his husband. Glad we weren't at that wedding! We had a conflict. Actually, I wouldn't have minded, it was DH who would have. There are 2 types of tofu, soft and firm. I like firm tofu, and have used it in some Asian dishes, although haven't made it in a while. Vegans also eat something called seitan, which they use as faux chicken or ground beef. Tofu is made from soybeans, seitan from wheat gluten. Vegans can eat beans, but don't eat eggs or milk products, which is the big difference between vegan and vegetarian. As far as your great nephew's weight, being vegan should not be an issue, but I would think that it's possible to have an iron deficiency being vegan.
I am sure that financial advisors would tell you to take your social security younger if they think that they are going to get their hands on it. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to figure out when your break even point would be, if you are good at math. The best part for me about taking it now is that we are getting our medicare Part A & B premiums deducted from that, so we don't even think about how much it is. We had been paying about $450 per quarter for it. We are now going to start to have our Part D deducted from it as well.
Carol, it's possible that you had your mother-in-law sign the forwarding card, so that would take care of the issue. I am hoping these people will just let me know if any mail comes, until Thanksgiving, then I will have my DBIL sign the card and give it in to the post office. What is pretty silly about the whole thing is that not everyone has a will, and if they don't, and there is no reason to do a probate proceeding, there is no executor or administrator appointed.
I have read 2 science fiction books that I really liked, The Martian, and Station Eleven, but I am not a science fiction or fantasy person either. I also don't like time travel, but loved The Dream Daughter.
Gareth, Amazon gift cards are good, but also Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, if either is in your area. How much do you spend on each other? Other good gifts are kitchen towels or gloves.
Karen, I looked through my older books I've read, and here are a few more for you: Whistling Past the Graveyard The Supreme's at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat Euphoria The All Girl's Filling Station Last Reunion Commonwealth Princess Elizabeth's Spy (there are more to the series from the author) Miller's Valley A Fall of Marigolds
That should do it for you for a while, but I can always give you more. I am now at 63 books for the year that I am willing to own up to, and at least another 63 that are my guilty pleasure books.
Karen, I think that the Jets have the Packers beat by a long shot in the embarrassing their fans department yesterday. The only redeeming part of yesterday for us is that the Ravens beat the Patriots.
I had a really busy day at work today, didn't get everything done, and I don't even know what I did all day.
