This is a thread devoted to those in their 50s & 60s and beyond who don't have children or grandchildren but live rich, full lives. Please feel free to join our stroll thru life and come back often for support and to share. ************************ Happy Cooking to those who are preparing dishes today. I am grateful I am not traveling by plane or car as I watch the Weather Channel and the snow, rain and wind across the country. For anyone traveling, good luck and safe travels.

Good Thanksgiving Eve and thanks for the start Chele.
Chele - love the new avatar; really clear and cool! The commute went pretty well yesterday with the hip doing better than the knee. I was hurting by the time I got home yesterday evening and I managed to leave early so that was a plus. DS does the cooking and I have the goodies to bring to DSIL and DS's house for snacks tomorrow. I did just over 11K steps yesterday between the commute and work. A full week of that should be interesting when I go back next week. How did Iggy's luncheon go? The other 2 dishes he's making sound very good. How was your chili? We will leave tomorrow morning for Jersey and stop at DS's house to drop off some things and then on to DSIL's house for a few afternoon hours.
Becky - glad to hear that the evaluation was helpful and working on the identified areas will definitely help the knees. Sorry the news on the bull wasn't better but glad to know you have a plan worked out. I hope your shopping today will not be too frustrating and that the PT will go well. I will start again next week in the evenings as they had no appointments available for this short week.
Linda - hope the pie making goes well today. You continue to be a busy gal as usual. How are Bob's eyes doing at this point? Very glad to hear that the wedding went well and that you didn't have to fight getting back if attending with the wild weather in Denver.
Kathy - how did things end up with the IT issues you were helping DM with? The hacking seems to just go on and on and it's very disheartening and frightening especially for older folks who have little to no knowledge of the computer items and the real risks. It's pretty surreal that the time has passed and its back to St. Crazy full time for me. I am happy that I have healed well and a bit anxious to go back to the insanity once again. I was there until just after 3:pm yesterday and I just really didn't stop.
Karen - WOW on Arya sleeping in again! How is the back feeling today? Interesting, that the sitting and lifting from sitting movement is bothering you so much. Has the sinus thing finally cleared up completely for you? I came home tired and sore yesterday but made it and that's a plus. I actually put ice on the knee when I woke up this morning. I have a few house items to do today in between monitoring emails and doing work. I think I will just do laps out front after such an active day yesterday. We received our employee engagement scores back from the Gallup Poll that the facility does each year. I was immensely bummed as after having some of the highest numbers for literally the past 6-7 years, my numbers went down substantially. I came home really disheartened and befuddled about them. It really is a different world and climate in the place even since I've been home healing. Gives fighting the forces of evil a whole new meaning! How is the cooking coming along today? I'm happy you don't need to venture out today. I may need to go to the post office to pick up a package envelope to return something I bought on ebay. Otherwise, I am hoping to lay low and just get my work, chores and laps done.
Sending hugs and warm wishes to all. Have a safe and lovely Thanksgiving Eve. Ciao for now~

Liz, seems you are due a little knee rest! Glad you are nor cooking. Given the weird people you work with and for and your medical time, I would not think too much about the scores. I found with teacher evaluations from admin it said more about the evaluator than me! One guy said everybody is average, so that us what he put down. I was a dept. head and a mentor teacher with two state awards. His wife wrote his thesis!
pie day here ...I used to make mom's pie crust, then Julia Child's until I realized nobody noticed a difference with Pillsbury from the grocery!
I use the old Betty Crocker pumpkin pie recipe too. But the apple is an really old Farm Journal one with apple slices piled high. I think dotting them with butte before too crust makes a difference.
DH woke at 4, but I stayed asleep til 8:39 so he is off to get turkey breast and the dry cleaning. I am drinking coffee and ungrogging!

Thanks for the start, Chele. I have been watching the Weather Channel as well and am thankful we aren't going anywhere. How was the chili? Did you report on how Iggy's work luncheon went? If so, I must have missed it. I have an almond pound cake in the oven and if I know Dale, it will be cut before tomorrow. Are you doing any prep today or will that be Iggy's job? Does he have Friday off?
Linda, your new avatar makes me hungry. Is this a pie you made or are you still working on that? Did you go to the museum today? I know what you mean about evals being more about the evaluator. I had a supervisor who rated all his direct reports high (even those who didn't deserve it) and when he left, we got someone who initially rated all of us lower than deserved and even had a couple of complaints filed against him after that first round. Fortunately, things went a little better the 2nd year. My DM had the same feeling about Julia Child vs. Pillsbury. All people taste is the filling anyway.
I'm glad the commute wasn't too bad yesterday, Liz, but I am very concerned about your having to do it 5 times next week. Are you still using a cane? If you can get out of work on time each evening so you have a chance to rest a little in the evening, perhaps it won't be too awful. How many PT sessions do you have next week? The back is showing a bit of improvement, so I hope that will continue. Arya didn't wake up until after 7 this morning. When it's cold, I think she is enjoying nestling under the covers longer. I think I have finally gotten ahead of the sinuses. You had a few difficut employees this past year, so I wonder if that might have affected your engagement numbers, along with a change of supervisors. I don't blame you for being upset by them. I wonder if you need to be challenging your staff to do more for themselves and depend on you a bit less. Or perhaps with your recent medical leave, they got spoiled by your doing so much for them and resent actually having to do their jobs by themselves. Do you get any comments that might give you any hint at why the numbers are what they are? Post office shouldn't be too crazy today, but hope you don't have to be close to any grocery stores. Safe travels tomorrow and I hope the pups will do well visiting.
Becky, how was PT and how was HEB? I hope it wasn't too nuts. Did you go to the big buffet today for lunch?
What will you be taking to the family gathering, Kathy? Nice that DBIL will be doing so much of the cooking.
We had some pretty good rain early morning (one of the other things that lulled Arya to sleep later) and have some pretty hefty wind gusts right now. Dale went to a state park about 45 minutes away and I hope he won't have any problems on the trails because he said they had a lot of downed trees across the trail from the last wind storm that he felt would still be where they fell. I guess as long as another one doesn't come down on top of him, it will be ok. Arya gets freaked by the sound of the winds, so I hope it will die down soon. I need to make my list of cooking methods and times so everything to be ready tomorrow at about the same time. The turk'y roast and a macaroni casserole plus the rolls will have to be done in the oven. Mashed potatoes in the IP, and noodles on the stove. We'll either do mixed greens or a veggie, so that won't have to be factored in. I also will make a pear crisp but it can bake while we're eating.
Safe travels, whether you're going across town or across state lines.

Chele, thanks for the start. I'm also grateful that I don't have to travel and for our good weather here. I'll take 80 over the storms any day. It's also very nice to not have to cook! Liz, I think DM should be fine since she got a new credit card number. Like you said, she doesn't have much computer knowledge and it took me a few explanations to get through to her that they couldn't do anything else with the credit card information. She already has her credit frozen from a previous breach, so I don't think there is much more she can do. She is lucky that they hadn't used her credit card info yet. I can't believe it's time for you to go back to St. Crazy already. 11k steps is a lot for anyone to do every day. Safe travels tomorrow and hope you have a nice Thanksgiving. I wouldn't let the Gallup Poll numbers bother you too much. We used to do them too and sometimes the results were surprising. Linda, the Macy's breach was during one week in October. Their website was hacked and it captured the data you entered in the checkout form for credit cards. DM got a letter from them and they offered the typical credit monitoring and said to check your credit card statements. They got the credit card #, expiration date, and security code, plus name and address, so I don't know why they didn't recommend replacing the card. DM called her credit card company and they're sending a new one with a new number. I bought something on their site in October too, but I used Paypal and wasn't affected. Karen, hope the back is doing better. Congrats on a new high on Osteo. It is a bit strange that the Gators have beaten FSU in Tallahassee a couple of times in the past decade, but haven't beaten them on their home field. It would be great to keep that streak going! I wonder which bowls TN and FSU will wind up in. They have similar records, so I vote that they play each other. Becky, how was the shopping today? Hope all goes well with the bull.

Iggy’s luncheon went well. He left the leftovers at work for people to eat this week. The chili turned out great. I have that recipe down. I have boiled the eggs for the potato and egg dish. We will finish that dish tomorrow. Dinner isn’t until 6 pm because DN2 has to go to in-laws for lunch. They have a big gathering as well. Iggy is making the baklawa tonight after we pickup the turkey for our Saturday feast. He is going to spend Friday with his DB so I have the day to myself. Saturday is the big game between OSU and Michigan, so guess what we will be watching while we cook. FYI, Old Navy is having a 50% off everything sale for 3 days. I got some crazy socks and cute scarves for Christmas gifts.
Liz, like Karen, I am concerned about a full week of commuting. That is a lot of steps on your knees and hips. Those stupid polls. I hate them. A lot of people just use them to vent. We love you anyhow. And so do the pups and Gary and DS and DNs. I hope you can enjoy family time this weekend without stressing about St. Crazy.
Linda, I am sorry Michaels didn’t have a tree for you. Yuck on the nasty bug nephew caught from grandniece. Sounds nasty. That’s great on the pie crusts. They are a pain to make. Iggy and I rate pie crusts from various places, so we notice, but we are extremely annoying people anyway. 😆
Becky, that is too bad about the bull. It’s always something as Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say. What did you do at PT today? I hope you aren’t sore. DidKenneth get his haircut?
Karen, yes, there are fees for the Amex gift cards but at least with them I know I won’t overspend for Christmas and I won’t be hacked. I am glad the back is improving. Good work at Osteo! I hope Dale’s trip to the park went well. We had rain overnight as well and have gusting winds. Not a bird in sight today. How nice to sleep in these autumn days, if you call 7 am sleeping in. Your dinner sounds delicious. I was laughing at Dale cutting into your pound cake tonight.
Kathy, yeah, you get to sit back and watch DBIL slave away in the kitchen. I am with your DM in freezing my credit. It has been frozen for years. I have opened it once a twice briefly but you have to pay for that. You can laugh at us northerners and our crappy weather. It sounds scary out there with the wind howling and shaking the trees and the swirling the leaves.
Until tomorrow...

Almond pound cake sounds good. Glad doggie us sleeping later at last. Micki heads for the bedroom chair with a blankie he can snuggle in or to the heated blanket on the bed when they come back from his early walk!He us wearing his coat as it is in 40s then. I never do online at Macy's or most regular stores. ..hacking there for years! But here I can go to the actual store. We have one card for online and paypal still sunny here with wind picking up, rain starts tonight and they are saying do not even try to travel north or into the eastern mountains tomorrow! Neighbors have folks coming fromN. NM...going to be hard crossing the Navajo reservation. Last pies out of the oven, cranberries done, veggies for stuffing cooked, and sweet potatoes are roasting. Our veg for home Thanksgiving Friday will be creamed peas and pearl onions. Birds Eye used tosell that frozen years ago. tomorrow I pack up stuff and head to brother's about 25 min. away.

Thanks for the start Chele.
Liz That's a lot of steps between the commute and work.I wish you could stay out longer especially with your knees hurting.I hope you have a safe and fun trip.I ended up having to go to HEB and WM this morning.Kenneth needed a haircut and Scooter needed dog food so I shopped in WM while he was getting his hair cut which isn't far from WM.In fact he always drives through the WM parking lot to get over there.I was only able to get one session in during this short week so I understand.I don't know how you can do it after work and still go home and cook dinner after a day at St Crazy.I'm sorry about the scores but I know it's not your fault.Get in all the rest you can this weekend.
Linda I'm glad you were able to sleep in a bit.
Karen The buffet is for Thanksgiving and I haven't decided if I want to go.I guess it depends on the weather tomorrow but I got a steak to cook for tomorrow night and we may just eat at home for lunch.HEB was crowded and Walmart was fairly busy while I was in there but they actually had 4 checkers working. They never have more than one or two at the most.
In addition to my hamstrings being tight the IT bands on both legs are extremely tight which is causing some of the knee pain.I really like my physical therapist. She applied moist heat at first. Then she had me get on the recumbent bike for 10 min.She told me to slow down because I wasn't going to a fire.LOL.After that she did acupressure on the affected tissues. She gave me a couple of stretches over the weekend and to keep using heat and ride the recumbent bike slowly.I am sore and I know they can't get rid of my arthritis but if they can loosen up the affected areas my knees could feel better after awhile.
